  • The grammatical meaning of "了", a marker of aspects in Mandarin has been described differently among researchers, three of which are to express the end, a certain phase of event and the start of an event or a state. This paper consists of four parts. Set out below is a summary of main points of each part. The first chapter elaborates on the results of previous related studies, points out the purpose and meaning of the current study. Chapter two introduces marked "了" including concepts of the meaning and "Done", "complete whole", "realization" Corresponds to the case study. And explains syntactic and semantic features of the "了", highlights the look "of the了" problems of syntax and semantics, "了2" made three domains Limit 3 Including of the knowledge. This chapter holds that its grammartical meaning can be described as follows an event has taken place or a state has formed prior to a certain reference time, and that the grammartical meanings mentioned above can be considered sub - grammartical meanings of "了",which result from different prominence of the phases of an event. Chapter three explains tag component of the "了1", "了2". It discusses limited constraints, first place for "了" syntactic meaning, "The End" and "extension" of the opposition for "了" is looming around the root system, "了" and "着" sentence structure and semantic and syntactic forms. Chapter four discusses bounded features of the 了. It mainly focuses on "了"of bounded / unbounded function. It analyses the functions of components and explains a bounded function of "了1" and a bounded function of "了2". Chapter five is the conclusion. It consolidates and summarises the previous contents of the paper and points out the conclusion.

  • In wide-ranging information society, fast and easy access to information in language of one's choice is indispensable, which may be provided by using various multilingual Natural Language Processing (NLP) applications. Natural language text contains references among different language elements, called anaphoric links. Resolving anaphoric links is a key problem in NLP. Anaphora resolution is an essential part of NLP applications. Anaphoric links need to be properly interpreted for clear understanding of natural languages. For this purpose, a mechanism is desirable for the identification and resolution of these naturally occurring anaphoric links. In this paper, a framework based on Hobbs syntactic approach and a system developed by Lappin & Leass is proposed for resolution of reflexive anaphoric links, present in Urdu text documents. Generally, anaphora resolution process takes three main steps: identification of the anaphor, location of the candidate antecedent(s) and selection of the appropriate antecedent. The proposed framework is based on exploring the syntactic structure of reflexive anaphors to find out various features for constructing heuristic rules to develop an algorithm for resolving these anaphoric references. System takes Urdu text containing reflexive anaphors as input, and outputs Urdu text with resolved reflexive anaphoric links. Despite having scarcity of Urdu resources, our results are encouraging. The proposed framework can be utilized in multilingual NLP (m-NLP) applications.

  • This paper analyzes the recognition of driver's behavior in lane change using context-free grammar. In contrast to conventional pattern recognition techniques, context-free grammars are capable of describing features effectively that are not easily represented by finite symbols. Instead of coordinate data processing that should handle features in multiple concurrent events respectively, effective syntactic analysis was applied for patterning of symbolic sequence. The findings proposed the effective and intuitive method for drivers and researchers in driving safety field. Probabilistic parsing for the improving this research will be the future work to achieve a robust recognition.

  • In this paper, we propose a model to enrich an ontology by incrementally extending the relations through variations of patterns. In order to generalize initial patterns, combinations of features are considered as candidate patterns. The candidate patterns are used to extract relations from Wikipedia, which are sorted out according to reliability based on corpus frequency. Selected patterns then are used to extract relations, while extracted relations are again used to extend the patterns of the relation. Through making variations of patterns in incremental enrichment process, the range of pattern selection is broaden and refined, which can increase coverage and accuracy of relations extracted. In the experiments with single-feature based pattern models, we observe that the features of lexical, headword, and hypernym provide reliable information, while POS and syntactic features provide general information that is useful for enrichment of relations. Based on observations on the feature types that are appropriate for each syntactic unit type, we propose a pattern model based on the composition of features as our ongoing work.

  • To build an efficient Question-Answering (QA) system, a question type classifier is needed. It can classify user's queries into predefined categories regardless of the surface form of a question. In this paper, we propose a question type classifier using a Support Vector Machine (SVM). The question type classifier first extracts features like lexical forms, part of speech and semantic markers from a user's question. The system uses $X^2$ statistic to select important features. Selected features are represented as a vector. Finally, a SVM categorizes questions into predefined categories according to the extracted features. In the experiment, the proposed system accomplished 86.4% accuracy The system precisely classifies question type without using any rules like lexico-syntactic patterns. Therefore, the system is robust and easily portable to other domains.

  • This paper proposes a new set of topological features (primitives) for use with a syntactic recognizer for high-accuracy recognition of printed alphanumeric characters. The recognition is accomplished on nine character groups, where each group has different combinations of four feature points. A skeleton enhancement eliminating isolated points and smoothing irregular points is developed. The tree automata processed in parallel enables the realization of high-recognition speeds and font-type independent recognition. The proposed character recognition system is tested for alphanumeric character fonts of dot matrix printer and plotter using IBM-PC/XT.

  • The purpose of the this study is to observe the effects of healthy adults' age on temporal features of speech and identify which could differentiate older and young adults. We examined speech rates(i.e., overall speaking rate, articulation rate), occurrence of pause, and duration of pause per utterance by utilizing the National Institute of Korean Language's open corpus. We selected a total of 30 healthy adults (10 young, 10 middle-aged, and 10 older adults) in this study. There were significant differences among the groups in the overall speaking rate, articulation rate, total occurrence of pause, the occurrence of pause between syntactic words, total duration of pause, and duration of pause between syntactic words. The older and middle-aged adults showed slower speech rates and longer and more frequent pause than young adults. But there were no significant differences among the three groups in terms of pause within syntactic word. The overall speaking rate significantly differentiated older adults from young adults. These findings suggested that the effect of speakers' age was reflected in gradual changes in the temporal features of their speech.

  • A shallow semantic parsing system analyzes the relationship that a syntactic constituent of the sentence has with a predicate. It identifies semantic arguments representing agent, patient, instrument, etc. of the predicate. In this study, we propose a two-phase shallow semantic parsing model which consists of the identification phase and the classification phase. We first find the boundary of semantic arguments from partial syntactic parsing results, and then assign appropriate semantic roles to the identified semantic arguments. By taking the sequential two-phase approach, we can alleviate the unbalanced class distribution problem, and select the features appropriate for each task. Experiments show the relative contribution of each phase on the test data.

  • As the networks connect the world, enterprises tend to move manufacturing activities into virtual spaces. Since different software applications use different data terminology, it becomes a problem to interoperate, interchange, and manage electronic data among heterogeneous systems. It is said that approximately one billion dollar has been being spent yearly in USA for product data exchange and interoperability. As commercial CAD systems have brought in the concept of design feature for the sake of interoperability, terminologies of design features need to be harmonized. In order to define design feature terminology for integration, knowledge about feature definitions of different CAD systems should be considered. STEP standard have attempted to solve this problem, but it defines only syntactic data representation so that semantic data integration is not possible. This paper proposes a methodology for integrating modeling features of CAD systems. We utilize the ontology concept to build a data model of design features which can be a semantic standard of feature definitions of CAD systems. Using feature ontology, we implement an integrated virtual database and a simple system which searches and edits design features in a semantic way.

  • This paper argues that various kinds of displaced structures in English should be licensed by a more explicitly formulated type of rule schema in order to deal with what is called weak connectivity in English. This paper claims that the filler and the gap site cannot maintain the total identity of features but a partial overlap since the two positions need to obey the structural forces that come from occupying respective positions. One such case is the missing object construction where the subject fillers and the object gaps are to observe requirements that are imposed on the respective positions. Others include passive constructions and topicalized structures. In this paper, it is argued that the feature discrepancy comes from the different syntactic positions in which the fillers are assumed to be located before and after displacement. In order to capture this type of mismatch, syntactically relevant features are handled separately from the semantically motivated features in order to deal with the syntactically imposed requirements.
