Coordination in natural language is often syntactically explained by the rule schema X \longrightarrow X′ and X", where X′ and X" refer to expressions of a like syntactic type. While this schema does explain a lot of instances of coordination, it is well known that this schema also gives rise to serious structural ambiguity, leading not only to numerous unintended interpretations but also to a high degree of unnecessary computational complexity. In order to identify intended interpretations, we need to take into account a number of clues at all the levels of morphology, syntax, semantics, and pragmatics/discourse. In this paper, we propose, with an accompanying data analysis, principles of symmetry and coherency for an effective and reasonable identification of intended interpretations from coordination-bearing sentences.
In this study, in order to investigate the factors that affect the percentage of correct answers and the degree of discrimination of the TOEIC test, a regression analysis was performed using corpus indicators that influence correct answer rate and the degree of discrimination for each part derived from the item analysis. The basic calculation word_length, consistency index LSA_overlap_adjacent_sentences, lexical diversity MTLD_VOCD, conjunction All_logical_causal_connectives_incidence, situational model casual_particles_causal_verbs_Ratio, syntactic complexity Left_embeddedness, and syntactic pattern density Infinitive_density were found to have negative effects. These factors that lower the correct answer rate can be utilized when setting learning goals. Vocabulary diversity index MTLD_VOCD, conjunction Additive_connectives_incidence, syntactic pattern density Infinitive_density, and lexical information person1_2_pronoun_incidence were found to have a positive effect. Factors influencing the increase in discrimination may provide important information for developing a learning program.
This study aimed to investigate speech motor control in adults who stutter (AWS) by testing whether articulation rate changes with practice and linguistic complexity. Eleven AWS and 11 adults who do not stutter (AWNS) repeated four sentences of different lengths and syntactic complexity [simple-short (SS), simple-long (SL), complex-long (CL), and faulty-long (FL) sentences]. Overall articulation rates of each sentence were measured and compared between groups. Practice effects were evaluated by comparing the articulation rates of the first three, middle four, and last three productions. Overall, the AWS had significantly slower articulation rates than AWNS across the four sentences. The longer sentences showed significantly slower articulation rates than the baseline sentence (SS). The articulation rates of the middle four and the last three productions were significantly faster than those of the first three productions of each sentence in both groups. The articulation rates of the SS, SL, and CL sentences indicated a consistent practice effect. The slower articulation rates of the AWS are consistent with a speech motor limitation. There was no interaction with linguistic complexity or practice, so a slower articulation rate may be a general feature of the speech of AWS. Both AWS and AWNS showed practice effects with faster articulation rates which may reflect a degree of adaptation to the stimuli.

The syntactic analysis for the practical machine translation should be able to analyze a long sentence, but the long sentence analysis is a critical problem because of its high analysis complexity. In this paper a sentence segmentation method is proposed for an efficient analysis of a long sentence and the method of determining optimal sentence segmentation positions using statistical information and genetic learning is introduced. It consists of two modules: (1) decomposable position determination which uses lexical contextual constraints acquired from a training data tagged with segmentation positions. (2) segmentation position selection by the selection function of which the weights of parameters are determined through genetic learning, which selects safe segmentation positions with enhancing the analysis efficiency as much as possible. The safe segmentation by the proposed sentence segmentation method and the efficiency enhancement of the analysis are presented through experiments.
One of the issues with the textbooks pertinent to the current study is whether or not the Universal Design for Learning (UDL) factors have been dealt to satisfy students with different aptitudes in learning the core objectives of the lessons. This study develops a modified version of the UDL analysis criteria from the cross curricular criteria to language teaching and learning and uses it to analyze the sequence of digital English textbooks to investigate the descriptive statistics of the UDL factors in the new textbooks. The result shows that the textbook is designed most favorably to the students with the talent of linguistic aptitude and less favorably to the students with other types of aptitudes. The sequence analysis shows that sentence/word length and appearance of new words are incrementally sequenced as students advance upper grades. However, the syntactic complexity of middle school curves up steeply which is different from the elementary school textbooks. The UDL analysis will provide learning factors to consider when designing digital English textbooks to cover different aptitudinal groups.
The purpose of this study is to analyze Yun Chi-ho's English Diary both quantitatively and qualitatively. A corpus of 574 diary texts is created from his first and last years in an English speaking environment, and analyzed by two language analysis programs, RANGE and Coh-Metrix. His later diaries have more words in total, and longer average sentence length than his earlier diaries. Also, the Coh-Metrix indices in syntactic complexity and referential cohesion are higher in his later diaries. A qualitative analysis of 57 diary texts shows some improvement in his use of language forms. The most frequent topics of his journals are Christianity, everyday life, politics of Korea and his English studies. His constant effort to keep his journal and correspondence with foreigners, almost all in English, is estimated as one of the key factors for his successful English acquisition. Educational implications for EFL writing courses are discussed.

Learning efficiency can be maximized by careful matching of text features to expected reader features (i.e., linguistic and cognitive abilities, and background knowledge). The present study aims to explore whether this systematic principle is reflected in the development of science textbooks. The current study examined science textbook texts on 20 measures provided by Auto-Kohesion, a Korean language analysis tool. In addition to surface-level features (basic counts, word-related measures, syntactic complexity measures) which have been commonly used in previous text analysis studies, the present study included cohesion-related features as well (noun overlap ratios, connectives, pronouns). The main findings demonstrate that the surface measures (e.g., word and sentence length, word frequency) overall increased in complexity with grade levels, whereas the majority of the other measures, particularly cohesion-related measures, did not systematically vary across grade levels. The current results suggest that students of lower grades are expected to experience learning difficulties and lowered motivation due to the challenging texts. Textbooks are also not likely to be suitable for students of higher grades to develop the ability to process difficulty level texts required for higher education. The current study suggests that various text-related features including cohesion-related measures need to be carefully considered in the process of textbook development.
Alternate pictures that are proven to be equivalent are in high demand to assess creative thinking and language skills. This study aimed to investigate the equivalence of three pictures ('Dog owners,' 'Lost Dog,' and 'Overslept') recently developed for use in a creative writing task. Middle school students (N=183) wrote a story in English based on one of the three prompts distributed randomly. Four writing features (fluency, syntactic complexity, lexical diversity, and temporality) were analyzed with Coh-Metrix and MANCOVA. The three prompts were largely equivalent in their capacity to detect differences among writers in all the features of writing. The difficulty levels of the three prompts, however, were not necessarily the same. Two prompts, Dog Owners and Lost Dog, were verified as equivalent prompts, and therefore, they are recommended as alternate forms to assess creative language skills in repeated measurements. The Overslept prompt had greater facility in eliciting diverse words and more temporal connectives in composing stories. The differential difficulty shown among the prompts suggests that the validity of using different picture versions in repeated assessment remains questionable unless those versions undergo equivalence verification.
