  • Herein, 24 species of the carabid beetles are reported from South Korea. Of these,5 species, Aephnidius adelioides(Mac Leay, 1825), Badisrer(Baudia) nakayamai Morita, 1992, Bembidion(Trichoplataphus) eurygonum(Bates, 1883), Cillenus (Novicillenus) aestuarii ($U\'{e}no$ & Habu, 1955), Cillenus(Desarmarocillenus) yokohamae(Bates, 1883), are listed for the first time from the Korean Peninsula. A new junior subjective synonym is established: Oodes integer Semenov, 1889=Oodes helopioides tokyoensis Habu, 1956. Syn. Nov.

  • Semantic information and features are very important for Semantic Role Labeling(SRL) though many SRL systems based on machine learning mainly adopt lexical and syntactic features. Previous SRL research based on semantic information is very few because using semantic information is very restricted. We proposed the SRL system which adopts semantic information, such as named entity, word sense disambiguation, filtering adjunct role based on sense, synonym cluster, frame extension based on synonym dictionary and joint rule of syntactic-semantic information, and modified verb-specific numbered roles, etc. According to our experimentations, the proposed present method outperforms those of lexical-syntactic based research works by about 3.77 (Korean Propbank) to 8.05 (Exobrain Corpus) F1-scores.

  • The increasing interest in big data analysis using various data mining techniques indicates that many commercial data mining tools now need to be equipped with fundamental text analysis modules. The most essential prerequisite for accurate analysis of text documents is an understanding of the exact semantics of each term in a document. The main difficulties in understanding the exact semantics of terms are mainly attributable to homonym and synonym problems, which is a traditional problem in the natural language processing field. Some major text mining tools provide a thesaurus to solve these problems, but a thesaurus cannot be used to resolve complex synonym problems. Furthermore, the use of a thesaurus is irrelevant to the issue of homonym problems and hence cannot solve them. In this paper, we propose a semantic text mining methodology that uses ontologies to improve the quality of text mining results by resolving the semantic ambiguity caused by homonym and synonym problems. We evaluate the practical applicability of the proposed methodology by performing a classification analysis to predict customer churn using real transactional data and Q&A articles from the "S" online shopping mall in Korea. The experiments revealed that the prediction model produced by our proposed semantic text mining method outperformed the model produced by traditional text mining in terms of prediction accuracy such as the response, captured response, and lift.

First Description of the Adult Scolecenchelys aoki (Ophichthidae, Anguilliformes) Collected from the South Sea of Korea, with Comments on the Synonym Scolecenchelys borealis (한국 남해에서 채집된 동해물뱀(Scolecenchelys aoki) 성어의 첫기재 및 Scolecenchelys borealis의 동종이명에 관한 검토)

  • Scolecenchelys borealis was first added to the Korean fish fauna based on one leptocephalus specimen (total length (TL) 59.2 mm) collected from Dokdo, in the East Sea. Recently, however, Scolecenchelys borealis has been treated as a junior synonym of Scolecenchelys aoki, necessitating review of the scientific name S. borealis. This study describes the morphological characteristics of S. aoki based on an adult specimen (TL 230.0 mm) collected from the sea south of Korea and compares its mitochondrial DNA 12S rRNA sequence with that of the S. borealis leptocephalus. The adult S. aoki is characterized by several morphological features: vertebral formula 59-55-135; preanal lateral pores 55; infraorbital pores two; teeth on upper jaw visible externally when the mouth is closed; the dorsal fin originates just behind the anus; both jaws and vomerine teeth are conical, arranged in two rows. An analysis of an 886-base paire sequence of the 12S rRNA showed that adult S. aoki was concordant with the S. borealis leptocephalus (sensu Ji et al., 2012), indicating that both are the same species.

  • A taxonomic review of four Myotis species (M. formosus tsuensis , M. macrodactylus, M. daubentonii ussuriensis and M. nattereri bombinus) belonging to the Vespertilionidae was carried out. based on the external and skeletal (cranium, mandible and humerus ) morphology. The queston whether M. nattereri inhabiting Korea and eastern Siberia is a good separate subspecies (M. nattereri amurensis ) or a synonym of M. nattereri bombinus has remained unsolved. Through a detaile dexaminatin of Koreaan and Japanese speciemens, the author follows the concept of Wallin (1969) who has regarded M. nattereri amurensis as a synonym for M. nattereri bombinus.

  • Three species of Epipleminae: Europlema nubifasciaria (Leech), Dysaethria meridiana (Inoue), and Phazaca theclata ($Guen{\acute{e}}e$), are reported for the first time from Korea. Europlema leleji Sinev turns out to be a new synonym of Epiplema nubifasciaria Leech and the latter is newly combined to the genus Europlema. Its female genitalia are first described. This is the first record of Europlema for the Korean fauna. Photos of adults and genitalia are provided for the treated species.

  • An isolate, 90-GT-129 was found to produce antibiotics with a selective inhibitory activity against Streptococcus pyogenes and Xanthomonas sp. The isolate formed a gray spiral aerial spore mass with smooth surface. Analysis of the cell wall acid hydrolysate of the isolate revealed presence of LL-di-aminopimelic acid, which indicates that the isolate belongs to a cell wall type Ⅰ actinomycetes. Cultural and physiological characteristics of the isolate placed it in Streptomyces rochei synonym cluster. A comparison of the isolate with 26 reference strains of Streptomyces rochei synonym demonstrated differences in physiological and cultural characteristics.

  • A study searching for unrecorded and taxonomically undescribed indigenous species has been conducted since 2006. Samples were collected from many sites in coastal waters and offshore in Korea as well as around Jeju Island. Since 2008 we have found 13 unrecorded species belonging to family Diplopsaliaceae, Heterocapsaceae, Kolkwitziellaceae, Protoperidiniaceae and Thoracosphaeraceae. The species are as follows, Preperidinium meunieri (2014), Heterocapsa ovata (2015), H. pseudotriquetra (2015), Diplopsalis lenticula (2008), Protoperidinium abei (2009), P. diabolus var. longipes (2010), P. depressum (synonym: P. parallelum (2008)), P. latispinum (2016), P. punctulatum (2010), P. solidicorne (synonym: P. spinosum (2010)), P. subpyriforme (2010), P. pacificum (2013), Scrippsiella hexapraecingula (2009) (note; The numbers in parenthesis refer to the year that the species was reported as unrecorded indigenous species by National Institute of Biological Resources, NIBR hereafter). Among these, 5 species were described as newly recorded species in Korean waters, and 8 were re-described in this study.
