  • Nanoscale zero valent iron (nZVI) has been intensively studied for the treatment of a plethora of pollutants through reductive reaction, however, the nano size should be of concern when nZVI is considered for water treatment, due to difficulties in recovery. The loss of nZVI causes not only economical loss, but also potential risk to human health and environment. Thus, the immobilization onto coarse or structured support is essential. In this study, two representative processes for nZVI immobilization on granular activated carbon (GAC) were evaluated, and optimized conditions for synthesizing Fe/GAC composite were suggested. Both total iron content and $Fe_0$ content can be significantly affected by preparation processes, therefore, it was important to avoid oxidation during preparation to achieve higher reduction capacity. Synthesis conditions such as reduction time and existence of intermediate drying step were investigated to improve $Fe_0$ content of Fe/GAC composites. The optimal condition was two hours of $NaBH_4$ reduction without intermediate drying process. The prepared Fe/GAC composite showed synergistic effect of the adsorption capability of the GAC and the degradation capability of the nZVI, which make this composite a very effective material for environmental remediation.

  • The purpose of this study was to improve release rate and bioavailability of nateglinide formulation. Polymorphism selection and particle size control were performed to enhance formulation dissolution rate, and a pH modifier was included in the formulation to overcome pH-dependent solubility of nateglinide. The enhanced dissolution rate was characterized by using a dissolution test. The results showed that H-type raw material had a higher dissolution rate than that of B-type raw material. There was 6.2% difference in dissolution between the two materials at 60 min. With regard to particle size, raw material with a $1.13{\mu}m$ particle size showed a 20% faster release rate than that of raw material with a $2.28{\mu}m$ particle size. Furthermore, fumaric acid was included in formulation as a pH modifier. That addition produced a greater than 50% improvement in dissolution rate. In conclusion, dissolution rate of nateglinide can be enhanced by optimizing its polymorphism and particle size; moreover, a synergistic effect on the enhancement of dissolution rate is obtained by including fumaric acid, a pH modifier, in the formulation.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate whether rhBMP-2 (BMP2) could induce synergistic effect with $Pro-Root^{(R)}$ MTA (MTA) in pulpotomized teeth in the rats. Healthy upper first molars from thirty-two, 10 weeks old, Sprague-Dawley rats were used for this investigation. The molars were exposed with round bur, and light pressure was applied with sterilized cotton to control hemorrhage. 1.2 grams of MTA cement was placed in right first molars as a control group. In left first molars, $1\;{\mu}g$ of BMP2 was additionally placed on exposed pulps with MTA. All cavities were back-filled with light-cured glass-ionomer cements. The rats were sacrificed after 2 weeks and 7 weeks, respectively. Then histologic sections were made and assessed by light microscopy. Data were statistically analyzed via student t-test with SPSSWIN 12.0 program (p < 0.05). Inflammation observed in 2 weeks groups were severe compared to the 7 weeks groups. But the differences were not statistically significant. BMP2-addition groups had less inflammation than MTA groups in both periods, though these differences were also not statistically significant. In conclusion, the combination of BMP2 and MTA showed no differences with MTA only for pulpotomy of rat teeth.

  • This study was performed to evaluate the polymers and surfactants as the potential control agents of sweet potato whitefly Bemisia tabaci, which is causing problems in ornamental garden and greenhouse. Polymers have an insecticidal activity to knock down and to be lethal to small winged insects by its viscosity. Among five polymers tested at 0.2% concentration, polinol P-24 showed the highest insecticidal activity as 59.4% against B. tabaci adult in cylindrical chamber, and followed by polinol P-20 (insecticidal activity, 57.1%). When treated at 0.1 % or 0.3% concentrations, Polinol P-24 also showed the highest insecticidal activity with 43.3% and 54.5%, respectively. Among eight surfactants tested, insecticidal activity was the highest in 0.0005% NP10 treatment (70.0%), and followed by 0.001% NP7 (67.4%). The synergistic effect between polinol P-24 and eight surfactants was evaluated. After bioassays, the 0.2% polinol P-24 plus 0.005% NP10 was selected as a candidate control agent for controlling of B. tabaci adults. Polinol P-24/NP10 was showed the highest control efficacy against B. tabaci adults applied three times at three day-intervals in square rearing cage. In the greenhouse, the mixture treatment showed good control value over 70% seven days after treatment.

  • The zinc phosphate-coated mica (ZP/mica) pigments were prepared using phosphoric acid, zinc nitrate and mica as starting materials, and used as anticorrosive pigments. The scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and x-ray diffraction (XRD) techniques were used to observe the morphology and crystal structure of prepared pigments. The prepared pigments were incorporated into an epoxy binder to prepare coating and the corrosion inhibition performance of the pigments was evaluated using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). It was found that the anticorrosive performance of the ZP/mica pigment prepared at $70^{\circ}C$ was the better than that prepared at $20^{\circ}C$. The formation of ZnO, in addition to $Zn_3(PO_4)_2{\cdot}2H_2O$, was observed on ZP/mica pigment prepared at $70^{\circ}C$. The excellent anticorrosive performance of ZP/mica pigment could be ascribed to the synergistic effect with electrochemical anticorrosive mechanism from zinc compounds on mica and barrier anticorrosive mechanism from lamellar mica.

  • This study was conducted to determine the minimum concentration of citrus juice for basal medium and also to search for an additional carbon source for the best production of the gel. A concentrate of citrus fruit juice of 65$^{\circ}$Brix, it was diluted to be used as a basal medium. Static cultivation of Gluconacetobacter hansenii TL-2C for 14 days at 3$0^{\circ}C$ produced the best gel with 7.5$\pm$0.4 mm thickness in the 6-fold diluted citrus Juice concentrate without any additional nutrient. However, the same thickness could be obtained with 60 to 100-fold diluted juice concentrate when refined white sugar was added at appropriate concentrations. Glucose was the most effective sugar for the both of gel and acid production, and optimal concentration of the sugar was 10$^{\circ}$Brix. Ethyl alcohol at 1.0% had synergistic effects in combination with refined sugar and increased the gel thickness up to 15.1 mm which was 1.85 times thicker than that of refined sugar alone. However, acetic acid was not effective. Gel productivity with supplement of ethanol was 172.6$\pm$8.4 g wet/L, and it was approximately equal to 4.7 g of dry gel/L.

  • (-)-Epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG), a major flavonoid in green tea has multiple health benefits including chemoprevention, anti-inflammatory, anti-diabetic, and anti-obesity effects. In connection with these effects, EGCG can be a candidate to help the treatment of metabolic diseases. Metformin is a widely used anti-diabetic drug regulating cellular energy homeostasis via AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) activation. Therefore, the combination of metformin with EGCG may have additive or synergistic effects on treatment of type 2 diabetes. Nevertheless, there is no report for the pharmacokinetic and/or pharmacodynamic interaction of EGCG with metformin. Here, we evaluated the pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic interaction between metformin and EGCG in rats. Pharmacokinetics parameters of metformin were measured after oral administration of metformin in rats pre-treated with EGCG (10 mg/kg) or saline for 7 days. The results showed that there is no significant difference in pharmacokinetic parameters between saline control and EGCG-treated group. In addition, the hepatic AMPK activation by metformin in EGCG-treated rats was also similar to the control. The lack of additive effects of EGCG on AMPK activation or intracellular uptake of metformin was also evaluated in cells in the presence or absence of EGCG. Treatment of HepG2 cells with EGCG inhibited the metformin-induced AMPK activation. Combined results suggested that EGCG has no effect on the pharmacokinetics of metformin but may contribute to metformin action.

  • Akt is known to play an important role in cell proliferation and differentiation, and is also over-expressed in several types of cancer cells. In this study, we explored the anti-proliferative effects of selenium in HT-29 colon cancer cells, mediated through effects on Akt and COX-2. Selenium treatments at different concentrations and for different durations inhibited proliferation of HT-29 colon cancer cells and increased apoptotic cell death. Selenium treatment decreased Akt phosphorylation and COX-2 expression. Treatment with LY294002 (an Akt inhibitor) decreased proliferation of HT-29 cells, while a combined treatment with LY294002 and selenium resulted in even further decreases in cell proliferation. Inactivation of Akt by Akt siRNA treatment abolished these inhibitory effects on cell growth. COX-2 expression decreased in Akt transfected cells compared to non-transfected cells. These results suggest that selenium induced both anti-proliferative and apoptotic effects by inhibiting Akt phosphorylation and COX-2 expression. Selenium treatment also appeared to induce synergistic anti-proliferative effects by inhibition of Akt in HT-29 colon cancer cells.
