  • The mutual exclusion (MX) paradigm can be used as a building block in many practical problems such as group communication, atomic commitment and replicated data management where the exclusive use of an object might be useful. The problem has been widely studied in the research community since one reason for this wide interest is that many distributed protocols need a mutual exclusion protocol. However, despite its usefulness, to our knowledge there is no work that has been devoted to this problem in a mobile computing environment. In this paper, we describe a solution to the mutual exclusion problem from mobile computing systems. This solution is based on the token-based mutual exclusion algorithm.

  • Checkpointing is the one of fault-tolerant techniques to restore faults and to restart job fast. Checkpointing algorithms in distributed systems have been studied for many years. These algorithms can be classified into synchronous Checkpointing algorithms and asynchronous Checkpoiting algorithms. In this paper, we propose an independent Checkpointing algorithm that has a minimum Checkpointing counts equal to periodic Checkpointing algorithm, and relatively short rollback distance at faulty situation. Checkpointing count is directly related to task completion time in a fault-free situation and short rollback distance is directly related to task completion time in a faulty situation. The proposed algorithm is compared with the previously proposed asynchronous Checkpointing algorithms using simulation. In the simulation, the proposed Checkpointing algorithm produces better results than other algorithms in terms of task completion time in fault-free as well as faulty situations.

  • Although the initial cost of permanent-magnet linear synchronous motors is high owing to the installation of armatures over the full length of the transportation lines, linear motors are useful for transportation systems because of their high speed, acceleration, and deceleration. For these reasons, research into reducing the cost of linear motors is necessary, and a stationary distributed-armature system has been suggested for installing armatures in sections where acceleration and deceleration of the mover are required. However, each armature has ends that significantly increase the cogging force, resulting in the increase in the thrust ripple of the mover. Therefore, in order to improve the thrust ripple of the system, the present study aims to provide auxiliary teeth on both ends of the armature to achieve an optimal design through an analysis of the contribution ratio with respect to factors regarding the design of the experiment and the objective function.

  • In modern power systems, high penetration of distributed generators (DGs) results in high stress on system stability. Apart from the intermittent nature of DGs, most DGs do not contribute inertia or damping to systems. As a result, a new control method named virtual synchronous machine (VSM) was proposed, which brought new characteristics to inverters such as synchronous machines (SMs). In addition, different active power droop controls for VSMs are being proposed in literatures. However, they are quite different in terms of their dynamic characteristics despite of the similar control laws. In this paper, mathematical models of a VSM adopting different active power droop controls are built and analyzed. The dynamic performance of the VSM output active power and virtual rotor angular frequency are presented for different models. The influences of the damping factor and droop coefficient on the VSM dynamic behaviors are also investigated in detail. Finally, the theoretical analysis is verified by simulations and experimental results.

  • Thanks to the data processing facilities of modern digital computers, the performances of radar has been promoted greatly as one of the main components of command and control systems along with the computer communications. In this study, radar data integrating and processing systems were designed for the data processing of various information from many kinds of radar in a single data processing system. The performance of the data integrating system was analyzed by applying queueing theory. A radar data integrating network was designed for synchronous relational operations among the information processing systems and the transmission characteristics were also analysed by specific models for each system. The designed data integrating systems can be divided into a simplex type and a distributed multiplex type.

  • Diesel engine generators are widely used in the world, especially in remote site power systems as distributed generators. A weak distribution feeder with a small diesel engine may suffer from voltage and power fluctuations due to misfiring of the engine cylinder. In this study, new generator model with example engine torque was developed for the electromagnetic transient analysis program for power systems named XTAP. The configuration and verification results of the developed model are presented in the paper. The model is considered to be useful for analyses of small power systems with those diesel engines.

  • Microturbines system (MTS) are currently being deployed as small scale on-site distributed generators for microgrids and smart grids. In order to fully exploit DG potentialities, advanced integrated controls that include power electronics facilities, communication technologies and advanced modeling are required. Significant expectations are posed on gas microturbines that can be easily installed in large commercial and public buildings. Modeling, control, simulation of microturbine generator based distributed generation system in smart grid application of buildings for both grid-connected and islanding conditions are presented. It also incorporates modeling and simulation of MT with a speed control system of the MT-permanent magnet synchronous generator to keep the speed constant with load variation. Model and simulations are performed using MATLAB, Simulink and SimPowerSystem software package. The model is built from the dynamics of each part with their interconnections. This simplified model is a useful tool for studying the various operational aspects of MT and is also applicable with building cooling, heating and power (BCHP) systems

  • QFD(Quality Function Deployment) is a system for translating specific customer needs into detailed product requirements which are deployed throughout design, production, marketing and support operations. QFD is a team tool. However, most of commercial QFD softwares are standalone and therefore offer limited support for teamwork. In this paper, we developed a web-based QFD software to overcome many of the limitations that standalone systems suffer from. That is, this software was developed for synchronizing collaboration between team members distributed not only geographically but also over time. This software was developed by using Visual studio.NET and Microsoft COM+(CBD) technique and can be implemented on the web browser.

  • Recently, an interest in a hybrid system combining only the merits of the conventional wheel-rail system and Maglev propulsion system is growing as an alternative to high-speed maglev train. This hybrid-type system is based on wheel-rail method, but it enables to overcome the speed limitation by adhesion because it is operated by a non-contact method using a linear motor as a propulsion system and reduce the overall construction costs by its compatibility with the conventional railway systems. Therefore, the design and characteristic analysis of a coreless-type superconducting Linear Synchronous Motor (LSM) for 600km/h very high speed railway system are conducted in this paper. The designed coreless-type superconducting LSMs are the distributed winding model, the concentrated 1 layer winding model and the concentrated 2 layer winding model, respectively. In addition, the characteristic comparison studies on each LSM are conducted.
