Objective : The sensation of dysphagia, heartburn, globus hystericus, and functional dyspepsia are common symptoms of the functional upper gut disorders. This study was designed to investigate quantity of perceived stress, depression, and anxiety in the patients with functional upper gut symptoms whose esopahgeal manometry(EM) and gatroesophageal reflux (GERT) test were normal. Methods : A total of 38 patients who complained of the symptoms had been tested with 24-hour ambulatory EM and conventional GERT in our gastrointestinal clinic. Thirty patients whose tests had been normal(patients group) were assessed with Symptom Checklist-90-Revision(SCL-90-R), Beck Depression Inventory(BDI), and Spielberger Stait-Trait Anxiety Inventory(STAI) and compared with 30 patients(control group) without functional upper gut symtpoms in the hepatobiliary clinic. The two groups were also assessed by quantity of perceived stress during the last year through self-report. Results: 1) These patients tended to be predominently female, older, and possessed a lower education than control group. 79% of 38 patients who had been tested were normal. 2) Compared to the control group, the patients had significantly higher mean scores on four subscales(somatization, depression, anxiety, and positive symptom distress index). 3) The patient group had significantly more perceived stress than the control group. 4) The patients group had significantly higher levels of depression than the control gorup, but there was not any significant difference in the STAI. 5) There were significant positive correlations between the BDI score and the STAI-trait, the STAI-stait and the STAI-trait, the quantity of perceived stress and the STAI-trait. Conlusion : The patients with functional upper gut symptoms displayed more, psychological distress, sornatization, anxiety, and deperssion. Among them, patients had higer depression than control group. Functional upper gut symtoms could be more appropriately viewed as somatic symptoms of depression. These findings suggest that such patients need to have psychiatric intervention and treatment.
In the study of Stress-Control by Qigong Program, the results were as follows : In modern society, many stress factors affect the human organism, altering and chipping away at our nervous, endocrine, locomotor, reproductive, digestive, respiratory, circulatory and immune systems. The beneficial effects of Qigong can help us to restore our equilibrium and enhance our quality of life. This study was performed to investigate the effect of Qigong on stress and psychological symptoms. Twenty-two subjects were trained Qigong Program a week for 8 weeks. The stress index of subjects and psychosomatic symptoms was compared before and after Qigong Program and was significantly decreased after Qigong training. It means that the stress index and psychosomatic symptoms were improved by Qigong training.

BACKGROUND: Dobutamine and adenosine stress cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) imaging is relatively contraindicated in patients with moderate to severe aortic valve stenosis (AS). We aimed to determine the safety of dobutamine and adenosine stress CMR in patients with moderate to severe AS. METHODS: In this retrospective study patients with AS who underwent either dobutamine or adenosine stress CMR for exclusion of obstructive coronary artery disease were enrolled. We recorded clinical data, CMR and echocardiography findings, and complications as well as minor symptoms. Patients with AS were compared to matched individuals without AS. RESULTS: A total of 187 patients with AS were identified and compared to age-, gender- and body mass index-matched 187 patients without AS. No severe complications were reported in the study nor the control group. The reported frequency of non-severe complications and minor symptoms were similar between the study and the control groups. Nineteen patients with AS experienced non-severe complications or minor symptoms during dobutamine stress CMR compared to eighteen patients without AS (p = 0.855). One patient with AS and two patients without AS undergoing adenosine stress CMR experienced minor symptoms (p = 0.562). Four examinations were aborted because of chest pain, paroxysmal atrial fibrillation and third-degree atrioventricular block. Inducible ischaemia, prior coronary artery bypass grafting, prior stroke and age were associated with a higher incidence of complications and minor symptoms. CONCLUSIONS: Moderate to severe AS was not associated with complications during CMR stress test. The incidence of non-severe complications and minor symptoms was greater with dobutamine.
Stress is recognized as a major predisposing and/ or precipitating factor in long-lastig intractable chronic pain, such as temporomandibular disorders, headache, and other psychophysiological disorders. So it is necessary to detect physical and psychological changes induced by stress as soon as possible for positive treatment outcome. This study was performed to investigate the occurrence rate of stress symptoms according to anatomic region, type of symptom, and other personal and social factors. 859 subjects from general population answered the stress symptom questionnaire devised by the author and composed of 50 items. Data from the questionnaire were analyzed statistically with SPSS program and the results obtained were as follows : 1. Oral symptom which showed the highest frequency rate of 38.8% was vesicular lesion of the lip and cheek. The other symptoms with more 20% occurrence rate were ulcerative leion of lip and cheek, toothache, paresthesia of teeth, eruption of tongue, tongue coating and taste change in descending order. 2. In extraoral symptoms, ?데 disturbance was the item which showed the highest frequency rate of 62.0%, and the items for stiffness of suboccipital region and neck, headache, facial swelling, furuncle of face were answered more than 45% of the subjects whereas only 14.0% of the subjucts complained jaw pain under stress. 3. The better one who thought his or her health status was, the fewer items were answered and the difference of symptom frequency by dwelling place and by having hobby were shown in extraoral symptoms only. 4. For relief of stress symptoms, 79.2% of the subjects replied only to take a rest whereas not more than 13, 5% of the subjects visited dental clinic. Correlationship between symptom sites were very high.

Objectives: The objectives of this study were to investigate female labor workers' occupational stress and musculoskeletal symptoms and to identify the effects of their occupational stress and musculoskeletal symptoms on their health-related quality of life. Methods: A survey was conducted through direct interviews using a musculoskeletal symptoms questionnaire, the Korean Occupational Stress Scale(KOSS), and the Short-Form 36-Item Health Survey(SF-36). Subjects were 112 female labor workers in three factories in D city who were selected by convenience sampling. Results: Factors significantly affecting health-related quality of life were found to be: occupational stress(${\beta}$=-.36); degree of pain, with medium pain(${\beta}$=-.31) and extremely severe pain(${\beta}$=-.24); duration of pain, with more than 1 week-less than 1 month(${\beta}$=-.25) and more than 6 months(${\beta}$=-.16); frequency of pain, with once per 2-3 months(${\beta}$=-.22); responses to pain such as medical leave, use of worker's compensation insurance, task change, etc.(${\beta}$=-.16), and Slightly difficult(${\beta}$=-.16) versus Not hard at all. These variables demonstrated that health-related quality of life is 48%(F=11.72, p<.001) in female workers. Conclusions: To improve female labor workers' health-related quality of life based on the above results, occupational health managers should reduce the workers' occupational stress, develop and apply health interventions regarding musculoskeletal symptoms, prevent the early onset of musculoskeletal symptoms, and protect and promote the workers' health.
Purpose: This study aimed to compare work-related musculoskeletal symptoms, occupational stress and nursing work environments of nurses working in patient-sitter wards and general wards. Methods: The study surveyed 240 nurses with more than one year of experience working in both patient-sitter wards and general wards. The collected data then was analyzed by SPSS statistics version 22. Results: As for the musculoskeletal symptoms, the survey showed that 85.2% and 67.8% of the nurses had such symptoms respectively in patient-sitter wards and general wards. In terms of occupational stress, no significant difference was observed between the patient-sitter ward and the general ward (t=-0.23, p=.821). Lastly, the study showed that there is a significant difference in terms of work environment considering the scores recorded 2.65 and 2.55 points respectively in patient-sitter ward and general ward (t=2.53, p=.012). Conclusion: Follow-up research should look at ways to lower the rate of experiencing work-related musculoskeletal symptoms; analyze work performances and establish work standards to lower occupational stress; and devise measures to improve the work environment for the nurses working in patient-sitter wards.

The purpose of this study was to examine the workers' attitudes toward textile industry. Also the attitude was investigated how to be correlated to job stress symptoms and job performance. The data were obtained from questionnaire completed by 529 workers employed in textile or clothing companies. The SPSS package was used for data analysis which included t-test, ANOVA, mean, correlation, and factor analysis. The results showed that workers' attitudes toward textile industry were neither positive nor negative. The attitudes revealed to be divided into two components-cognition, affect/behavioral intention. Cognitive attitude was observed to be more positive than affective/behavioral intention attitude. The attitude differed according to personal characteristics such as sex, educational status, position, period of one's service, types of industry and job specifications. The attitude were correlated with job stress symptoms and job performance. The more positive the workers' attitudes were, the lesser job stress symptoms and the higher job performance were. As the two components of the attitudes are in the same way, the attitude toward textile industry exhibited to have higher correlation with job stress symptoms and job performance.
This study was designed and performed to identify the effects of oriental medical therapy on hwabyung patients by investigating the life events as the cause of Hwabyung, recent stress perception which influences the clinical appearances and change of symptoms by means of objective scales. 1. Through life events rating scale, life events are reported as follows, in the order of majority. Health, discord within family, martial life, friendship and interest, religion etc. Hwabyung patients experienced negative stress much more than positive stress. 2. Through the GARS (Global Assessment of Recent Stress), there were some significant decreases of stress perception in stress4(stress of sickness or injury), stress7(stress of change or no change in routine) and stress8(overall global stress)(p<0.05, respectively), but there were no significant decreases in five items out of eight items. 3. There were significant decreases of all rated symptoms(feeling of chest oppressed, stuffy in the chest or epigastric mass, feeling of something pushing-up, flushing of body or face, abrupt impulsion of anger, resentment), which were checked weekly for 4 times (p<0.05, respectively). In this study the symptoms of hwabyung were improved regardless of stress perception. It means that hwabyung can be improved significantly with oriental medical therapy.
Objectives: Stress is considered a causal factor in many diseases, allergic disease being one of them. The prevalence of allergic disease is increasing in Korea, but the relationship between allergic symptoms and stress is not empirically well known. We aimed to evaluate the relationship between allergy-related symptoms and stress in children and adolescents. Methods: We investigated 698 children and adolescents living in Gwangyang Bay, Korea, using a multi-stage cluster sampling method. Using the International Study of Asthma and Allergies in Childhood and the Psychosocial Well-being Index, these subjects were surveyed on allergy-related symptoms and psychosocial stressors in their lives, respectively. We used a multivariate logistic analysis for odds ratios for the complaint rate of allergic symptoms, after adjusting for age, gender, household income, body mass index, and residence. Results: After adjustments, lifetime rhinitis (odds ratio [OR], 1.024), rhinoconjunctivitis (OR, 1.090), diagnosis of itchy eczema (OR, 1.040), treatment of itchy eczema (OR, 1.049), 12-month allergic conjunctivitis (OR, 1.026), diagnosis of allergic conjunctivitis (OR, 1.031), and treatment of allergic conjunctivitis (OR, 1.034) were found to be significantly associated with stress. Conclusions: Our results support the notion that there is a relationship between stress and allergic symptoms in children and adolescents. Further research into any causal relationship between stress and allergies, as well as preventative public health plans for decreasing stress in children and adolescents are needed.

MSDs(Musculoskeletal Disorders) and Job Stress have been recognized as one of major problems in industry these days according to the results of most industrial health/safety studies. Specifically, MSDs have been growing problems in Korea as well as in US and European countries with higher incidence rate every year. This study tries to understand characteristics of job stress and association between MSDs and job stress for the workers at automobile manufacturing industry. This study also tries to understand the differences in terms of job stress between white collar and blue collar workers. The results showed that there was definite association between symptoms of MSDs and some of major job stress factors. However, there were big differences in terms of associations between two groups(white collar and blue collar workers). The first group(white collar workers) showed more associations between symptoms of MSDs and some of major job stress factors than that of the second group(blue collar workers) although symptom rate of the second group was higher than that of the first group. It could be concluded that symptoms of the first group had more effects from job stress while symptoms of the second group had more effects from typical job risk factors based on the results of the study.
