  • The theory of optimal stack filtering has been used in difference of estimates(DoE) approach to the detection of intensity edges in noisy image. In this approach, stack filters are applied to a noisy image to obtain local estimates of the dilated and eroded versions of the noise-free image. Thresholding the difference between these two estimates produces the estimated edge map. In this paper, the DoE approach is modified by imposing a symmetry condition of the data used to train the two stack filers. Under this condition, the stack filters obtained are duals of each other. Only one filter must therefore be trained;the other is simply its dual. They also produce statistially unbiased estimates. This new technique is called the symmetric Difference of Estimates (SDoE) approach.

  • Congenital hypoplasia of the depressor anguli oris muscle is a rare cause of asymmetrical crying facies in newborns. The clinical manifestations range from mild to severe asymmetry and may persist up to adulthood. In the current case, the patient did not exhibit other congenital anomalies or paralysis of other branches of the facial nerve. This adult patient presented with severe asymmetrical lower lip deformity during full mouth opening since birth. A chromosomal study for the detection of 22q gene deletion yielded negative results. The electromyography findings of the lower lip were insignificant. Depressor labii inferioris muscle resection was not effective, but bidirectional (horizontal and vertical) fascia lata grafting improved the aesthetic appearance of the asymmetrical lower lip. The patient showed improved lower lip symmetry during full mouth opening at 1 year after the surgery. Therefore, the details of this rare case are reported herein.

  • An enzyme electrode bound by rubber solution was newly constructed and the test of its practicability were carried out. The binder of carbon powder was styrene-butadiene rubber dissolved in toluene and enzyme source was ground tissue of cabbage root. Volatilization of the solvent made the electrode material possess a mechanical robustness and a fast signal appearance. The electrode showed electrochemically irreversible characteristics and a powerful catalytic power (detection limit=$5.0{\times}10^{-5}M$, S/N=2). The double reciprocal plot of signal current and substrate concentration was ideally linear and the symmetry factor and exchange current density of the electrode used in this work were 0.35 and $4.93{\times}10^{-5}Acm^{-2}$ respectively.

  • Recognition of parallel structure at early stage of sentence parsing can reduce the complexity of parsing. In this paper, we propose an unsupervised language-independent probabilistic model for recongition of parallel noun structures. The proposed model is based on the idea of swapping constituents, which replies the properties of symmetry (two or more identical constituents are repeated) and of reversibility (the order of constituents is inter-changeable) in parallel structures. The non-symmetric patterns that cannot be captured by the general symmetry rule are resolved additionally by the modifier information. In particular this paper shows how the proposed model is applied to recognize Korean parallel noun phrases connected by "wa/kwa" particle. Our model is compared with other models including supervised models and performs better on recongition of parallel noun phrases.

  • An efficient multi face detection technique is proposed based on hierarchical context-free attention operators in which multiple faces are efficiently detected from a noisy and complex background. A noise-tolerant generalized symmetry transform (NTSGT) is applied hierarchically, as a context free attention operator, to the input pyramidal image for the high speed global location of the regions of face candidates (ROFCs) with a single mask. For the face verification, local NTGST is applied within each ROFC to confirm the existence of the detailed facial features. First, by globally applying NTGST which introduces the average pyramid method and focusing to the input image with complex background, ROFCs with recognizable resolution are detected robustly. Morphological operations are applied only to the each detected ROFCs to emphasize the facial features like eyes and lips. Then, eyes are detected by locally appling NTGST to the ROFCs and only faces are detected by verifying the existence of the geometrical features of the faces relatively to the location of eyes. The experimental results show that the proposed method can efficiently detect multiple faces from a noisy or complex background with 93.5% detection rate.

  • In this paper, we have developed a portable acceleration measurement system to measure acceleration signals during walking and a gait analysis algorithm which can evaluate gait regularity and symmetry and estimate gait parameters automatically. Portable acceleration measurement system consists of a biaxial accelerometer, amplifiers, lowpass filter with cut-off frequency of 16Hz, one-chip microcontroller, EEPROM and RF(TX/RX) module. The algerian includes FFT analysis, filter processing and detection of main peaks. In order to develop the algorithm, eight hemiplegic patients for training set and the other eight hemiplegic patients for test set are participated in the experiment. Acceleration signals during 10m walking were measured at 60 samples/sec from a biaxial accelerometer mounted between L3 and L4 intervertebral area. The algorithm, detected foot contacts and classified right/left steps, and then calculated gait parameters based on these informations. Compared with video data and analysis by manual, algorithm showed good performance in detection of foot contacts and classification of right/left steps in test set perfectly. In the future, with improving the reliability and ability of the algerian so that calculate more gait Parameters accurately, this system and algerian could be used to evaluate improvement of walking ability in hemiplegic patients in clinical practice.

  • In this study, for the purpose of standardized quality control of a cold medicine, we simultaneous analyzed four main chemical components of a cold medicine: acetaminophen, caffeine, methyl paraben, and propyl paraben. The sample was subjected to quantitative analysis using high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), after pretreatment of four components. The experiment was carried out by using Isocratic elution at wavelength of 270nm. Acetonitrile and water (H2O) were used as a mobile phase at a flow rate of 1.0mL/min in a commercial C18 reversed-phase column. A volume of 10uL cold medicine were injected into the column with column oven temperature at 35℃. As a result of the experiment, the values of Resolution were 4.983, 1.596, 5.519, and 1.678 respectively-well over Rs >1.5, which indicates that the separation of four components were efficient. In addition, value of symmetry factor of the components was 1.056, 1.069, 1.032, and 1.133 respectively, to show its symmetrical stability. The calibration curve of all four components exhibits good linearity with R2 >0.9995 to 0.9999. Furthermore, the limit of detection(LOD) were between 0.0118 to 1.5973 mg/mL, while the limit of quantification (LOQ) were between 0.0353 to 4.7919 ㎍/mL with the recovery rate of 79.6% ~ 120.5%. The results of this study showed an efficient quality evaluation of a simultaneous analysis method for cold medicine components.

  • In this paper, we proposed the method to detect brain tumor region in MR images. Our method is composed of 3 parts, detection of tumor slice, detection of tumor region and tumor boundary detection. In the tumor slice detection step, a slice which contains tumor regions is distinguished using symmetric analysis in 3D brain volume. The tumor region detection step is the process to segment the tumor region in the slice distinguished as a tumor slice. And tumor region is finally detected, using spatial feature and symmetric analysis based on the cluster information. The process for detecting tumor slice and tumor region have advantages which are robust for noise and requires less computational time, using the knowledge of the brain tumor and cluster-based on symmetric analysis. And we use the level set method with fast marching algorithm to detect the tumor boundary. It is performed to find the tumor boundary for all other slices using the initial seeds derived from the previous or later slice until the tumor region is vanished. It requires less computational time because every procedure is not performed for all slices.

  • A hue-based attention operator and a combinational integral projection function(CIPF) are proposed to extract the normalized regions of face and facial features robustly against illumination variation. The face candidate regions are efficiently detected by using skin color filter, and the eyes are located accurately nil robustly against illumination variation by applying the proposed hue- and symmetry-based attention operator to the face candidate regions. And the faces are confirmed by verifying the eyes with the color-based eye variance filter. The proposed CIPF, which combines the weighted hue and intensity, is applied to detect the accurate vertical locations of the eyebrows and the mouth under illumination variations and the existence of mustache. The global face and its local feature regions are exactly located and normalized based on these accurate geometrical information. Experimental results on the AR face database[8] show that the proposed eye detection method yields better detection rate by about 39.3% than the conventional gray GST-based method. As a result, the normalized facial features can be extracted robustly and consistently based on the exact eye location under illumination variations.

  • This study introduces a novel analytical method for the assessment of pralsetinib impurities and degradation products (DPs), addressing critical gaps in existing methodologies. This research aims to develop a robust HPLC method for impurity analysis, characterize degradation products using LC-MS, and evaluate the environmental impact of the method. The study began by optimizing HPLC conditions with various columns and buffers, ultimately achieving successful separation using an XBridge® RP-C18 column with ethanol as solvent A and 50 mM formic acid at pH 2.9. This setup provided excellent peak resolution and symmetry, essential for reliable stability studies. The developed HPLC method was then adapted for HPLC-MS/MS, enhancing sensitivity and detection efficiency of DPs. Stress degradation studies of pralsetinib under different conditions (acidic, basic, oxidative, thermal, and photolytic) revealed significant degradation under acidic (29.3 %) and basic (21.5 %) conditions, with several DPs identified. Oxidative stress resulted in 19.8 % degradation, while thermal and photolytic conditions caused minimal degradation. HPLC-MS/MS analysis identified structures of five degradation products, providing detailed insights into pralsetinib's stability and degradation pathways. Method validation followed ICH guidelines Q2(R1), confirming method's specificity, selectivity, sensitivity, linearity, accuracy, precision, and robustness. The method exhibited strong linearity with a coefficient of determination (r2) greater than 0.999 for pralsetinib and its impurities. This method advances impurity detection and DPs characterization, ensuring the quality and safety of pralsetinib. Additionally, method's environmental impact was assessed, aligning with sustainable analytical practices. These findings provide essential data on pralsetinib's stability, guiding storage conditions and ensuring its efficacy and safety in pharmaceutical applications.
