  • Beatrix Farrand was America's first female landscape architect and Dumbarton Oaks in Washington, D.C., USA site of her best known garden design. The purpose of this study is to identify characteristics of the American Neoclassical tendencies in the early 1900s and Farrand's style through an analysis of Dumbarton Oaks. The results of analysis indicated that although Dumbarton Oaks was influenced by many European classic gardens, the garden has the unique style which reflects regional contexts and culture based on the philosophy of arts and crafts movement, The major characteristics of the late Neoclassical style in America can be summarized as follows. First, A series of terraced gardens were connected by paths and stairways and natural terrain was preserved as much as possible. Second, the formal and informal style coexist and the symmetric and asymmetric forms are well-balanced throughout the garden. Third, selection of plant materials and planting methods, influenced by both classical gardens and the Arts and Crafts style in UK, are in harmony with the space configuration and shape.

  • In this paper, a design method of the compact narrow band filter on the microstrip board is proposed using slot-type split spiral resonators. The design technique of this filter is based on cascading filter stages consisting of the combination of slot-type split spiral resonators, capacitive gaps between patches, and inductive grounded stubs with the meander configuration. By these means, it was possible to get the nearly symmetric frequency responses, adjustable bandwidths, compact sizes. And also excellent characteristic of the out-of-band rejection is achieved in contrast to the conventional filter design technique. The measured insertion loss shows good results about -3.47dB at the center frequency($f_0$=1GHz) and passband return loss is less than -12.62dB. The 3dB fractional bandwidth(FBW) is approximately 7.3%. The results of the frequency response measured on the fabricated band pass filter substrate show satisfactory agreement with the simulated frequency responses by the MWS(Microwave Studio) of CST in the region of interest.

  • This paper introduces a high-efficiency, high-gain, broadband quasi-Yagi antenna, and its four-element array for use in 60-GHz wireless communications. The antenna was fed by a microstrip-to-slotline transition consisting of a curved microstripline and a circular slot to allow broadband characteristics. A corrugated ground plane was employed as a reflector to improve the gains in the low-frequency region of the operation bandwidth, and consequently, to reduce variation. The single antenna yielded an impedance bandwidth of 49 to 69 GHz for $|S_{11}|$ <-10dB and a gain of >12.0 dBi while the array exhibited a bandwidth of 52 to 68 GHz and a gain greater than 15.0 dBi. Both proposed designs had small gain variations (${\pm}0.5$ dBi) and high radiation efficiency (>95%) in the 60-GHz bands. The features of the proposed antenna were validated by designing, fabricating, and testing a scaled-up configuration of the single antenna at the 15-GHz band. The measurements resulted in an impedance bandwidth of 13.0 to 17.5 GHz for $|S_{11}|$ <-10dB, a gain of 10.1 to 13.2 dBi, and radiation efficiency in excess of 88% within this bandwidth. Additionally, the 15-GHz antenna yielded quite symmetric radiation profiles in both E- and H-planes, with a high front-to-back ratio.

  • The characteristics of the unstable impinging circular jet is investigated based on the frequency characteristics and the sound field of the impinging-tones. Two symmetric modes S1 and S2, associated with low frequency and high frequency respectively, and one helical mode H have been observed. At low speed the S2 mode is dominant and switched by the S1 mode as the speed increases. When the jet speed is high the S1 mode is very active over the impinging distance from half the nozzle diameter to its ten times, while the S2 mode occurs at shorter distance corresponding to stage 2 and 3. The helical mode H seems unstable, likely to be influenced much by the experimental environment, and occurs at relatively high speed with almost the same frequency characteristics as the S2 mode. By estimating the convection speed of the unstable jet, it is found that the ratio of the convection speed to the jet speed decreases with both Strouhal number and Reynolds number and the speed of S2 mode is faster than the Si mode. When the present experimental results are compared with the previous investigations performed for the hole tone and the impinging tone with a small plate, the S1 mode is found to be associated with the ring vortex of large diameter with low speed, but the S2 mode with the vortex of small diameter with high speed. In addition, the frequency is found to be influenced by the nozzle configuration but the characteristics is almost the same. From the impinging distance and frequency range, it can be deduced that S1 mode is related with the jet column mode and S2 mode with the shear mode.

  • The present study investigates heat/mass transfer and flow characteristics in a ribbed rotating passage with turning region. The duct has an aspect ratio (W/H) of 0.5 and a hydraulic diameter ($D_h$) of 26.67 mm. Rib turbulators are attached in the parallel arrangement on the leading and trailing surfaces of the passage. The ribs have a rectangular cross section of 2 m (e) $\times$ 3 m (w) and an attack angle of $70^{\circ}$. The pitch-to-rib height ratio (p/e) is 7.5, and the rib height-to-hydraulic diameter ratio (e/$D_h$) is 0.075. The rotation number ranges from 0.0 to 0.20 while the Reynolds number is constant at 10,000. To verify the heat/mass transfer augmentation, internal flow structures are calculated for the same conditions using a commercial code FLUENT 6.1. The results show that a pair of vortex cells are generated due to the symmetric geometry of the rib arrangement, and heat/mass transfer is augmented up to $Sh/Sh_0=2.9$ averagely, which is higher than that of the cross-ribbed case presented in the previous study for the stationary case. With the passage rotation, the main flow in the first-pass deflects toward the trailing surface and the heat transfer is enhanced on the trailing surface. In the second-pass, the flow enlarges the vortex cell close to the leading surface, and the small vortex cell on the trailing surface side contracts to disappear as the passage rotates faster. At the highest rotation number ($R_O=0.20$), the turn-induced single vortex cell becomes identical regardless of the rib configuration so that similar local heat/mass transfer distributions are observed in the fuming region for the cross- and parallel-ribbed case.

  • This study deals with new application method of the connecting tuned mass damper (CTMD) system for efficient vibration control of adjacent twin structures which have the same dynamic properties such as natural frequency and damping characteristics to each other. In the existing research, the vibration control of the twin structures has a limit to the application of the conventional damper-connection method of the twin structures. Due to the same frequency characteristics leading to the equally vibrating behaviors, it is impossible to apply the conventional connection method of the adjacent structures. In order to overcome these limitations induced by the symmetry of the dynamic characteristics, we propose a new CTMD-based control system that adopts the conventional connection configuration but unbalances the symmetric system by arranging the control device asymmetrically and then can finally achieve the efficient control performance. In order to demonstrate the applicability of the proposed system, numerical simulations of the optimally designed proposed system have been performed in comparison with the optimal design results of the existing independent single tuned mass damper (STMD) control system and the another optimal control system previously proposed by the same author, hereafter called CTMD-OsTMD. The comparative results of the control performances among STMD, CTMD-OsTMD and the proposed CTMD systems verified that the newly proposed control system can be a control-efficient and cost-effective system for vibration suppression of the two adjacent twin structures.

  • Feistel and SPN are the two main structures in designing a block cipher algorithm. Unlike Feistel, an SPN has an asymmetric structure in encryption and decryption. In this paper we propose an SPN algorithm which has a symmetric structure in encryption and decryption. The whole operations in our SPN algorithm are composed of the even numbers of N rounds where the first half of them, 1 to N/2, applies function and the last half of them, (N+1)/2 to N, employs inverse function. Symmetry layer is executed to create a symmetry block in between function layer and inverse function layer. AES encryption and decryption algorithm, whose safety is already proved, are exploited for function and inverse function, respectively. In order to be secure enough against the byte or word unit-based attacks, 32bit rotation and simple logical operations are performed in symmetry layer. Due to the simplicity of the proposed encryption and decryption algorithm in hardware configuration, the proposed algorithm is believed to construct a safe and efficient cipher in Smart Card and RFID environments where electronic chips are built in.

  • In this study, the solution plasma process was utilized with the aim of degrading synthetic dyes in water at atmospheric pressure. The experiments were conducted in a batch-type reactor consisting of a symmetric wire-wire electrode configuration with rhodamine B (RhB) as the target synthetic dye. The effects of the plasma treatment time and initial dye concentration on the RhB degradation were investigated by monitoring the change in absorbance of RhB solutions. The RhB solutions turned lighter in color and finally colorless with prolonged plasma treatment time, indicating the destruction of dye molecules. The RhB solutions were found to have degraded, following the first-order kinetic process. However, for high initial RhB concentrations, another kinetic process or factor seems to play a dominant role at the initial degradation stage. The fitted first-order rate constant decreased as the initial concentration increased. This result suggests that the degradation behavior and kinetic process of the RhB solution strongly depends on its initial concentration. The RhB degradation is considered to be due to a combination of factors, including the formation of chemically oxidative species, as well as the emission of intense UV radiation and high-energy electrons from the plasma. We believe that the solution plasma process may prove to be an effective and environment-friendly method for the degradation or remediation of synthetic dye in wastewater.
