  • Deep reasoning procedures are model-based, inferring single or multiple causes and/or timing relations from the knowledge of behavior of component models and their causal structure. The overall goal of this paper is to develop an automated deep reasoning methodology that exploits deep knowledge of structure and behavior of a system. We have proceeded by building a software environment that uses such knowledge to reason from advanced symbolic simulation techniques introduced by Chi and Zeigler. Such reasoning system has been implemented and tested on several examples in the domain of performance evaluation, and event-based control.

  • Nonlinear equation of motion of the flexible manipulator are derived by the Lagrangian method in symbolic form to better understand the structure of the dynamic model. The resulting equations of motion have a structure which is useful to reduce the number of terms calculated, to check correctness, or to extend the model to high order. A manipulator with a flexible 4 bar link mechanism is a constrained system whose equations are sensitive to numerical integration error. This constrained system is solved using the null space matrix of the constraint Jacobian matrix. Singular value decomposition is a stable algorithm to find the null space matrix.

  • This paper describes and implements a design method of register allocation as a required module of RISC compiler systems. It compiles a C program to a machine-independent intermediate language, translates each variable into symbolic register. After local allocation process for the symbolic registers, global register allocation is executed by applying the graph coloring algorithm. This register allocation phase is designed for a system with the large register file like RISC machines.

  • The focus of this paper is en symbolic interaction of housing and self identity. In terms of housing \ulcorner self interactions, this paper aims at defining how human self is influenced by housing and is reflected on housing. This paper discusses meanings and symbols of housing, it also clarifies the development of industry and technology have effect on housing - self indentify and enrich reification, pseudoindividuality, alienation. This paper concludes that human beings are creative agent and accordingly suggests revitalizing housing environmental representations .

  • The 1968 Huế Massacre is a horrifying event rarely mentioned today in Vietnamese history and mass media. It is forgotten perhaps because it is simply indescribable. This study reads a song by Vietnamese musician Trịnh Công Sơn, where he attempted to chronicle the catastrophic images of the massacre. We use the notion of symbolic death in psychoanalysis to interpretation of the song, and shed a new light on how it captured this historical event which eludes understanding.

  • In this study, we tried to find the moderating effect as an interaction between brand concept variables and thinking style variables as well as the main effect of each. To this end, the inner wear bradns, CalvinKlein(symbolic concepts) and bodyguard(functional concept), as two parent brands and wallets as an extension product were selected. The results of this study were as follows: (i) Extension evaluation as well as fit judgement based on brand concepts was higher in symbolic brand than functional brand. (ii) The holistic thinkers were higher in fit judgement and expansion evaluation than the analytic ones. (iii) In case of symbolic brand, there was little differences in fit judgement and expansion evaluation between holistic thinkers and analytic thinkers. But In functional brand, there was some differences relatively. So, we found the interaction effect between variables in fit judgement and expansion evaluation. We can expect this research result to be helpful in working out diverse and practical marketing strategies using existing brand concepts in the global market environments.

  • This study examined the characteristics of costumes worn at Halloween parties, a form of cultural entertainment commonly seen in the U.S. The Halloween party culture involves children and adolescents wearing costumes, decorating their bodies, and mimicking famous characters. Furthermore, the types and motifs of Halloween costumes have become a means of expressing individuality. This study conducted empirical research on how such motifs were reflected in modern Halloween party-wear in order to provide basic data regarding the development and design of Halloween costumes and the formation of the related entertainment culture. This study researched the shape of costumes and the type of traditional motif presented in these costumes, as well as analyzed the symbolic meaning of each motif. The research process was as follows. First, this study investigated the origin and evolution of Halloween by researching precedent studies, books, and internet data. Second, this study extracted the types of traditional Halloween motifs by analyzing the characteristics and symbols of Halloween costumes commonly presented in such materials. After collecting 547 Halloween-related images from U.S. and Korean Internet websites, this study sorted and analyzed images that could represent traditional Halloween motifs. According to the results, representative traditional Halloween motifs included black cats, white rabbits, tridents, scarecrows, skull and bones, ghosts, witches, vampires, bats, werewolves, and jack-o-lanterns(pumpkins, etc.). The sentiments for such traditional Halloween motifs changed according to era and race. The symbolic meaning would continuously change - from positive to negative and vice versa - to reflect various socio-cultural phenomena. The results of this study are expected to be used as basic data for developing Halloween costume designs and the related entertainment culture.

  • The emergence of pop art in the 1960s exerted a profound impact on integrating art into the real lives of the general public, which continues in the current area of culture of post-industrial society. Thus, this study aims to attempt the popularization and modernization of Korean images by applying the concept of pop art to the development of a national symbolic image. This study utilized Mugunghwa, Taegeukgi, and the Great Seal, which are national symbolic images that establish the identity of Korea through differentiation, universality, and visual formativeness. It then proceeded with the development of neo-pop art motives and patterns using national symbolic images from the standpoint of symbolism, mix-match, and repetitiveness from among the characteristics of neo-pop art. This study carried out pattern design by departmentalizing each characteristic according to the standpoint of neo-pop art through scribbles composed of the following: Signs, pictograms, and childlike characters; drawing simplification for symbolism; a mix of the East and the West; a mix of subfashion and subculture for mix-match; the repetition of lines, characters, and icons; and the exaggeration and grotesqueness of characters and icons for repetitiveness. This study is expected to serve as momentum for raising the cultural value of Korea and for the development of a pattern design capable of achieving worldwide competitiveness through the combination of the permanence and continuity of national symbols with the popular universality of pop art.
