  • In order to improve effectiveness of rhizobia- legume symbiotic nitrogen fixation, ecological and physiological characteristics of indigenous rhizobia distributed in Korea, that is, symbiotic effectiveness of indigenous soybean rhizobia, nitrate reductase activities of the soybean bacteroid from five different soils, and differences of host-infection abilities among the soybean cultivars under population densities of the same indigenous soybean rhizobia, were investigated. The results were summarized as follows: 1. The number of indigenous soybean rhizobia was ranged from $9.2{\times}10^2$ cells per gram of soil in calcareous soil II to $42.4{\times}10^3$ cells per gram of soil in calcareous soil I in Danyang. 2. The symbiotic effectiveness of indigenous soybean rhizobia from five different soils was high in the case of soybean continuously cultivated, and calcareous soil I that population densities of indigenous soybean rhizobia were observed highly. 3. Inverse relationship was observed between total nitrogenase activity (TNA) and nitrate reductase activity (NRA) from the soybean bacteroids ($r=-0.502^*$), but the correlation between nitrate reductase and specific nitrogenase activities (SNA) could be devided into two groups. It was classified into group I which is high in SNA and low in NRA, and group II which is low in SNA and high in NRA. 4. The infection ability of the indigenous soybean rhizobia in the same soil conditions showed the reciprocal difference among each soybean cultivars. In Kwangkyo and Jangyeup, the symbiotic effectiveness appeared by infection of indigenous soybean rhizobia was higher than it of the other soybean cultivars.

  • Laboratory and pot experiment were carried out to find the symbiotic nitrogen fixing activities and the yield of dry matter on the several selected wild soybean plant. 1. Very high acetylene reducing(nitrogen fixing)activities were observed in isolated strains of Rhinchosis volubilies Lour. (924 nmole), Desmodium oldhami Oliver (844 nmole) and Glycine soja s. et z. (271 nmole/test tube/hr) while Rhizobium japonicum was only 0.6 nmole/test tube/hr. 2. On the serological reaction, eight isolated Rhizobium strains were sufficiently different to distinguish from the Rhizobium japonicum. 3. On the pot experiment with Glycine soja s. et z., A. Number of total nodules were higher in NPK+rice straw+Ca+Mo than in NoPK. However, little differences were observed in mumber of effective nodules. B. Yield of dry matter was increased with increasing of nitrogen content in plants. C. Estimated amount of fixed nitrogen in plant by an individual nodule was higher in NoPK than in NPK+rice straw+Ca+Mo.

  • RR~Telescopii is a symbiotic nova exhibiting accretion activities through gravitational capture of the slow stellar wind from a Mira variable. We present high resolution spectra of RR~Tel obtained with MIKE and the 6.5 m Magellan-Clay telescope, in which we find broad features with FWHM exceeding $10{\AA}$ at 6545, 6825, 7082, 7023 and $7053{\AA}$. They are formed through Raman-scattering with atomic hydrogen of far-UV He II 1025, O~VI 1032, $1038{\AA}$ and C II 1036 and $1037{\AA}$. We compute the Raman conversion efficiencies using the case B recombination theory for He II emissions, which are used in turn to infer the intrinsic line luminosities of O VI and C II. The Raman O~VI features are characterized by double-peaked profiles with a peak separation ~ 60km/s, pointing out the presence of an accretion disk with a physical size of ~ sub AU. In contrast, Raman C II features exhibit profiles with a simple peak and a narrower width ~40 km/s, indicating that C II is formed in a much more extended region. The weak C II multiplet at 1335, $1336{\AA}$ found in the IUE spectral archive and the absence of C II 1036, $1037{\AA}$ in the FUSE archive show that far-UV C II lines suffer heavy interstellar extinction consistent with the distance of ~ 2.5 kpc to RR Tel.

  • The objective of this article is to explore the economic relationship between China and the surrounding dynamic Asian economies. It delves into China's influence over the Asian economies and whether this relationship is a market-led or de facto symbiosis. The three principal channels of regional integration analyzed in this article are trade, FDI and vertically integrated production networks. They are essentially based on the activities of the private-sector in these economies. China methodically expanded and deepened its economic ties with the regional neighbors. At the present juncture, China's integration with the surrounding Asia is deep. Another issue that this article explores is the so-called China "threat" or "fear" in Asia. It implies that China is crowding out exports of the other Asian economies in the world market place. Also, as China has become the most attractive FDI destination among the developing countries, it is apprehended that China is receiving FDI at the expense of the Asian economies. These concerns were examined by several empirical studies, and the inference is that they are exaggerated. This article concludes that the private-sector business activities in China and other rapidly growing Asian economies were (and are) instrumental in bringing together the production structures and real economies. The result is both convergence and integration among the dynamic Asian economies. Over the years China and its Asian neighbors has developed a close and symbiotic economic relationship and a de facto regional integration.

  • Lichen is one of the most widely distributed eucaryotic organisms in the world. Lichen is the result of a symbiotic association between two unrelated organisms - a fungus and an alga (or cyanobacterium). In USA, Japan and European countries, there has been a resurgence of interest in lichens as source of novel, pharmacologically active molecules during the last 20 years. However, lichen researches in Korean lichens were mainly focused on investigation of Korean lichen flora and most of them were primitive and short-term based projects until 1990s. In this communication, general introduction of lichens was attempted to draw the attention of Korean researchers to Korean lichen bioresource. Research activities on Korean lichens during the past were also summarized. Recent progress in Korean lichen research is briefly discussed with emphasis of KoLRI (Korean Lichen Research Institute) activities and roles in national researches projects on bioresource development in Korea.

  • Multiculturalism may be deeply connected with the diversities of cultures and enlightenment discussed in the context that we live together with the specification of cultures derived from any spatial conditions overtly and covertly. People live on their own customs compatible with their space and the time, and they make their boundaries of races, nations, and national memories. In such a way each of them treats each other exclusively and is inclined not to recognize being of the others. Also people are apt to recognize the others unessentially and overlook the others's value and way of life. As a result they might destroy the foundation of symbiotic livings conditions on their own. On the other hand they pretend to search for the cultural diversities of the others and include them under their own universalities, resulting in conflicts. Hence it is required that we should make an efforts to prepare the fields for living together through getting over the problem of the recognition of matters and affairs before us. From the above-told critical mind this thesis seeks the multicultural relativities and more arrives at the relationalities discussed by East-Asiatic philosophers of Chuang Tzu and Ch'oe Han-gi. Especially by gazing at the idea of the interconnectedness which means activities, changeabilities and mobilities, appeared on the idea of Ch'oe Han-Gi's revolving transformation, it is stressed that the communications of the local with each other in the various aspects of, e.g. materials, regions and cultures should be achieved.

  • A lignin degradation bacteria, symbiotic bacteria was isolated from the gut of Sympetrum depressiusculum and tested for its lignin degrading activity using lignin model compounds and related aromatic compounds. The strain was identified as Serratia marcescens HY-5 based on the 165 rDNA, cellular fatty acid composition, biochemical and physiological characteristics. S. marcescens showed 40-50% lignin degrading activity in the media that contained vaillin, guaiacol and dealkaline lignin. S. marcescens showed three ligninase activities [Jaccase, lignin peroxidase(LiP) and Manganase peroxidase(MnP)]. Addition of dealkaline lignin to the basal media increased about 6fold of laccase activity. Vanillic acid or vanillin increase 1.3fold of MnP activity and p-coumaric acid increased 12fold of LiP activity which added to the basal medium.

  • Fungi of the genus Tuber are ectomycorrhizal fungi that form a symbiotic relationship mainly with oak and hazel trees. Tuber spp. exhibit a highly selective host plant preference; thus, for cultivation purposes it is important to select an appropriate host plant for successful mycorrhization. In addition, as mycorrhizal characteristics differ according to Tuber spp., it is necessary to understand the differences in mycorrhizae according to the fungal species. Tuber huidongense and Tuber himalayense were recently discovered in Korea; therefore, we used spore suspensions from these two species to inoculate two species of oak trees, Quercus acutissima and Quercus dentata, to compare colonization rates and morphologies of the mycorrhizae. The colonization rates demonstrated that the different Tuber spp. favored different host plant species. In addition, unique morphological and anatomical characteristics were observed for T. huidongense and T. himalayense depending on the host species. These findings can lead to new economically important agricultural activities related to truffle cultivation in Korea.

  • Active upwelling air motion in every summer over the Tibetan plateau is an essential process controlling activities of asian summer monsoon which affects water cycle and precipitation in eastern Asia. Large heating rate of surface air on the high plateau with average height of 4000m is considered to cause such large scale upwelling over the plateau. (omitted)
