  • Many factors influence SF6 insulation and a number of them have been clarified quantitatively. For the next generation of gas-insulated switchgear (GIS), quantitative considerations of these factorsare necessary to enhance reliability and to make GIS more compact. Advanced insulation technology this purpose is described.

  • This paper presents the surface discharge characteristics in Dry-Air on laminated epoxy solid dielectrics and conductive particles in order to provide the valuable information for the insulation design of eco- friendly gas insulated switchgear. To improve insulation performance, the three types of the laminated epoxy solid dielectrics were proposed, and it was revealed that their surface discharge characteristics were similar to the bakelite dielectrics of same-laminated types. From the surface discharge characteristics of dry air, it was demonstrated that the effect of conductive particles on surface discharge voltage was dominant when there are this particles at the shortest electrode gap and that the degradation of insulation performance on the conductive particles was evident in epoxy than teflon. These phenomena were interpreted in terms of particle-triggered discharge mechanism and electric field of triple junction, respectively.

  • The digital substation automation system has contributed hugely to increasing the stability of power systems by providing not only protection and control of power systems but diagnostic features alongside them. Digital substation automation systems in the scale of substations consist of integrated operation systems and intelligent electronic devices. The main intelligent electronic devices currently in use are digital protection relays and the bay controllers in Gas insulated switchgears. Proficiently accomplishing the coordination of protection within the power system as a means of ensuring reliability and contriving for the stability of power supply through connection of function, the application of bay controllers is crucial, which collectively manage the protection relay at the bay level in order to achieve both. In this research, the bay controllers to be used in high-voltage Gas insulated switchgear has been localized, and in particular, the logic function and editor required in order to minimize the complicated hardware-like cable connections in the local panel have been developed. In addition, to ensure the strength and reliability of the bay controller hardware developed herein, the type tests from KERI have been successfully completed.

  • $SF_6$ gas would be used in power transformer, GIS (Gas insulated switchgear) and so on because of its electrically superior insulation and chemically stable structure. Recently, the reduction of $SF_6$ is required to avoid global warming and the researches on the dilution of $SF_6$ with other gases have been carried out. $SF_6$ mixture gases with $N_2$ and $C_xF_y$ have drawn attention to the synergy effect. However, in order to understand the mechanism of the synergy effect, it is important to analyze and evaluate properties of mixture gases quantitatively. In this paper, we investigated the mechanism of synergy effect from electron collision processes and electron energy distribution by solving Boltzmann equation with propagator method. Three kinds of gases for dilution of $SF_6$ ($SF_6/N_2$, $SF_6/CF$4 and $SF_6/C_4F_8$) are considered in this simulation. On the properties of $SF_6/N_2$ mixture gas, the variation of reduced electric field was shown highly within 0%~40% mixtures of $SF_6$. And the more low-level electron energy has been distributed, the higher insulation capability has appeared.

  • This paper attempts to develop an algorithm which optimizes the electric field through the so-called NURB(Non-Uniform Rational B-spline) curve in order to improve the insulation capacity. In particular, the NURB curve is a kind of interpolation curve that can be expressed by a few variables. The electric field of a conductor is computed by Charge Simulation Method(CSM) while that of a spacer by Surface Charge Method(SCM); this mixed calculation method is adopted for the electric field optimization. For calculation of the initial and optimal shapes, the Gauss-Newton method, which is quite easy to formulate and has slightly faster convergence rate than other optimization techniques, was used. The tangential electric field, the total electric field, and the product of the tangential electric field and area (Area Effect) were chosen as the optimization objective function by the average value of electric field for the determined initial shape.

  • Knowledge of partial discharge (PD) is important to accurately diagnose and predict the condition of insulation. The PD phenomenon is highly complex and seems to be random in its occurrence. This paper indicates the possible use of chaos theory for the recognition and distinction concerning PD signals. Chaos refers to a state where the predictive abilities of a systems future are lost and the system is rendered aperiodic. The analysis of PD using deterministic chaos comprises of the study of the basic system dynamics of the PD phenomenon. This involves the construction of the PD attractor in state space. The simulation results show that the variance of an orthogonal axis in an attractor of chaos theory increases according to the magnitude and the number of PDs. However, it is difficult to clearly identify the characteristics of the PDs. Thus, we calculated the magnitude on an orthogonal axis in an attractor using singular value decomposition (SVD) and principal component analysis (PCA) to extract the numerical characteristics. In this paper, we proposed the condition monitoring method for gas insulated switchgear (GIS) using SVD for efficient calculation of the variance. Thousands of simulations have proven the accuracy and effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.

  • In order to evaluate the structural safety from an earthquake, the seismic analysis of large structures such as GIS in electric power substations and equipments for nuclear power plant has been carried out because the seismic qualification by experiment is very expensive. This paper presents the seismic analysis of the 72.5kV GIS produced by LGIS. The finite element model of the GIS is developed and analyzed using ANSYS. The model consists of beam elements for the enclosures and mass elements for the conductors and the mechanisms. Using the transient analysis under seismic load, the structural safety is verified.

  • In view of the fact that gas insulated switchgear (GIS) is an important piece of equipment in a substation, it is highly desirable to continuously monitor the state of equipment by measuring the partial discharge (PD) activity in a GIS, as PD is a symptom of an insulation weakness/breakdown. However, since the PD signal is relatively weak and the external noise makes detection of the PD signal difficult, it therefore requires careful attention in its detection. In this paper, the algorithm for detection of PD in the GIS using the wavelet transform (WT) is proposed. The WT provides a direct quantitative measure of the spectral content and dynamic spectrum in the time-frequency domain. The most appropriate mother wavelet for this application is the Daubechies 4 (db4) wavelet. 'db4', the most commonly applied mother wavelet in the power quality analysis, is very well suited to detecting high frequency signals of very short duration, such as those associated with the PD phenomenon. The proposed algorithm is based on utilizing the absolute sum value of coefficients, which are a combination of D1 (Detail 1) and D2 (Detail 2) in multiresolution signal decomposition (MSD) based on WT after noise elimination and normalization.

  • We experimentally investigated discharge phenomena inside vacuum interrupter at 1 to 20 Torr to simulate the vacuum leakage. We used glass type of vacuum interrupter where the internal pressure and the type of gasses can be varied according to requirement. The experiment is conducted under ac applied voltage and the experimental circuit is constructed to simulate the actual circuit used in cubical type insulated switchgear. We used two types of gases such as air and $SF_6$. The use of glass type vacuum interrupter allowed us to measure discharges occurring in vacuum interrupter optically. We measured and discussed the discharge occurring in both gases with a current transformer and ICCD camera. We a1so revealed that electromagnetic wave spectra emitted by the discharge have same frequency range for both gasses.

  • This paper presents the uncertainty analysis results of fire modeling input parameters for motor control center in switchgear room of nuclear power plants. FDS (Fire Dynamics simulator) 5.5 was used to simulate the fire scenario and Latin Hyper Cube Monte Carlo simulations were employed to generate random samples for FDS input parameters. The uncertainty analysis results of input parameters are compared with those of the model uncertainty analysis and sensitivity analysis approaches of NUREG-1934. The study results show that the input parameter uncertainty analysis approach may lead to more conservative results than the uncertainty analysis and sensitivity analysis methods of NUREG-1934.
