The performance of a direct-injection type diesel engine often depends on the strength of air flow in the cylinder, shape of combustion chamber, the number of nozzle holes, etc. This is of course because the process of combustion in the cylinder was affected by the mixture formation process. In the present paper, high speed photography was employed to investigate the effectiveness of holes penetrated from the bottom of cavity wall to piston crown for some more useful utilization of air. The holes would function to improve mixing of fuel and air by the increase of air flow in the cylinder. The results obtained are summarized as follows, (1) Activated first of the combustion by shorten of ignition timing and rapid flame propagation (2) Raised the combustion peak pressure, more close to TDC the formation timing of peak pressure.

Recently, several LPG engines for heavy-duty vehicles have been developed, which can replace some diesel engines that are one of a main source for air pollution in urban area. As a preliminary study on the liquid phase LPG injection (hereafter LPLI) system applicable to a heavy duty LPG engine, the engine output and combustion performance were investigated with various combustion chambers and fuel compositions using a single cylinder engine equipped. Experimental results revealed that ellipse, double ellipse and nebula type combustion chamber made a more advantage in breaking swirl flow into small turbulence scale than bathtub type. Especially, performance of nebula type showed most highest efficiency and engine output under lean mixture conditions. An investigation fur various LPG fuel compositions was also carried out, and revealed that the case with 40% propane and 60% butane shows the lowest efficiency at stoichiometry, however, as the mixture became leaner its efficiency increased and became even higher for 100% propane case.

Combustion stability tests of 30 $ton_f$-class LRE thrust chamber with double swirl coaxial injector were carried out in domestic ground combustion test facility by means of artificial perturbation method. In these tests, thrust chambers with varying design factors like recess number of injector, baffle length, types of film cooling and chamber diameter were used and test results showed that these design factors are closely related with high frequency combustion stability. By using the oscillation decrement instead of the decay time in the combustion stability analysis of artificially perturbed LRE thrust chamber, it was confirmed that increment of damping factor results in the improvement of high frequency combustion stability of LRE thrust chamber.

A vortex chamber is a simple device that separates compressed gas into a high-temperature stream and a low-temperature stream. It is increasing in popularity as a next-generation heat exchanger, but the flow physics associated with it is not yet well understood. In the present study, both experimental and numerical analyses were performed to investigate the temperature separation phenomenon inside the vortex chamber. Static pressures and temperatures were measured using high-sensitivity pressure transducers and thermocouples, respectively. Computational fluid dynamics was applied to simulate 3D unsteady compressible flows. The simulation results showed that the temperature separation is strongly dependent on the diameter of the vortex chamber and the supply pressure at the inlet ports, where the latter is closely related to the viscous work. The previous concept of a pressure gradient wave may not be a reasoning for temperature separation phenomenon inside the vortex chamber.

In order to design a compact urea selective catalytic reduction system, numerical simulation was conducted by computational fluid dynamics tool. A swirl type static mixer and a mixing chamber were considered as mixing units in the system. It had great influence on flow characteristics and urea decomposition into ammonia. The mixer caused flow recirculation and high level of turbulence intensity, and the chamber increased residence time of urea-water-solution injected. Because of those effects, reaction rates of urea decomposition were enhanced in the region. When those mixing units were combined, it showed the maximum because the recirculation zone was significantly developed. $NH_3$ conversion was maximized in the zone due to widely distributed turbulence intensity and high value of uniformity index. It caused improvement of $NO_x$ reduction efficiency of the system. It was possible to reduce 55% length of the chamber and connecting pipe without decrease of $NO_x$ reduction efficiency.

Effects of combustion chamber design on combustion stability characteristics of a full-scale gas generator were studied experimentally. Thirty seven double-swirl injectors with recess number of 1.5 were distributed in the injector head, which significantly influences combustion performance. The characteristics of combustion stability were inspected by the parametric variations such as changing length and diameter of the combustion chamber and installing a turbulence ring. The experimental result shows that as the effective length of the combustion chamber decreased, an instability frequency took place in a high-frequency region, and the amplitude of the dynamic pressure generally diminished and could be reduced to the unharmful level. However, the dynamic pressure fluctuation in the region of longitudinal resonant frequency could not be suppressed perfectly.

Hot-firing tests were carried out using a mixing head with 19 swirl coaxial injectors and a combustion chamber with internal cooling channels. The propellants of liquid oxygen and kerosene(Jet A-1) were burned in a range of chamber pressures (59~82 bar) and mixture ratios (2.0~3.0). The temperature of water used as the cooling fluid was measured at the inlet and outlet of the cooling channels, and the heat flux was calculated. The aim of this study was to examine the effect of combustion instability on heat transfer in a subscale thrust chamber, and detect the temperature variation of cooling water. During several hot-firing tests, combustion instability was encountered which caused a 5~20% increase in heat flux. The peak heat flux took place in the initial stages of combustion instability.
An experiment was performed to obtain the local heat transfer coefficient and Nusselt number in a circular duct with a 180$^{\circ}$ bend for Re=6 x 10$^4$, 8 x 10$^4$ and 1 x 10$\^$5/ under swirling flow and non-swirling flow conditions. The test tube with a circular section was made from stainless steel having a curvature ration of 9.4. Current heat flux of 5.11 kW/㎡ was applied to the test tube by electrical power and the swirling motion of air was produced by a tangential inlet to the pipe axis at 180$^{\circ}$. Measurements of local wall temperatures and the bulk mean temperatures of air were made at four circumferential positions at 16 stations. The wall temperatures showed a reduced distribution curve at the bend for the non-swirling flow, but this effect did not appear for the swirling flow. The Nusselt number distributions for the swirling flow, which was calculated from the measured wall and the bulk temperatures, were higher than that of the non-swirling flow. The average Nusselt number of the swirling flow increased by about 90-100%, compared to that of the non-swirling flow. The Nu/Nu$\_$DB/ values at the 90$^{\circ}$ station for non-swirling flow and swirling flow were approximately 2.5 and 4.8 at Re=6x10$^4$ respectively. The values agree well with Said's results for non-swirling flow.

In-cylinder spray flow motion plays an important in the adjustment of mixture preparation with a fundamental spray characteristics and in-cylinder flow field well in direct-injection gasoline engine. In this study, the fundamental spray characteristics such as mean drop size, velocity distribution, spray angle were measured and in-cylinder spray flow motion was visualized in order to optimize intake port, piston top land and combustion chamber shapes in the development stage of mass-produced G야 engine. For these experiments, the PDPA measurements and Mie scattering technique were used for detailed spray characteristics and in-cylinder spray motions were obtained by use of ICCD camera through the single-cylinder optical engine. From the experimental results, the test injector shows a good low-end linearity between the dynamic flow and fuel injection pulse width and the fuel spray of 20mm or less in SMD with good spray symmetry. In addition, the in-cylinder tumble flow has more effect on the homogeneous mixture formation than that of in-cylinder swirl flow at early injection mode and the in-cylinder swirl flow plays a better role of stratified mixture preparation than tumble flow at late injection mode.

An one-zone heat release analysis was applied to a 4 cylinder indirect injection diesel engine. The objective of the study is to calculate heat release accurately considering the effect of specific heat ratio. heat transfer and crevice model and to find out combustion characteristics of an indirect diesel engine considering the effect of the pressures in main and swirl chambers. Especially specific heat ratio indicating combustion characteristics is adapted. instead of that indicating matter properties, which has been used in former studies Moreover by adaption of blowby model, cylinder gas mass became accurately calculated. Therefore, with ideal gas equation, calculating cylinder gas temperature, it was found to affect heat transfer loss and heat release. Determining heat transfer constants $C_1$. $C_2$ as 0.6 respectively. the integrated gross heat release values were predicted well for the measured value at various engine speed, full load operating conditions. The curve of heat release rate was similar to SI engine rather than DI engine. That is originated from that swirl chamber reduce an instant combustion which occurs in DI engine due to ignition delay on early stage of combustion.
