  • The internal flow characteristics of a gasoline direct injector have been studied to improve fuel economy and reduce exhaust emissions. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) is used to examine the internal flow of the GDI with the purpose of designing the optimum geometry of the injector. This study tests orifice length, cone angle, swirl angle, orifice diameter and needle lift. The results show that optimum sizes of the orifice length, cone angle, swirl angle, orifice diameter and needle lift are 0.8mm, $140^{\circ},\;120^{\circ},\;80mm\;and\;70{\mu}m$, respectively. The size of the lift does not affect the formation of the air core signficantly near the tip of the needle compared to the ball-type needle. The vena contracta phenomenon near the orifice inlet can be released by smoothing the edge.

  • An experimental study of decaying swirl air flow has been obtained by tangential inlet in a straight tube with Reynolds number range 20,000~40,000. The friction factor, swirl angle, velocity profiles and turbulent intensity are measured by using micro-manometer and hot-wire anemometer. It is found that the swirl flow behaviors depend on the swirl intensity along the test tube.

  • An experimental investigation was performed to study the characteristics of turbulent swirling flow in the cylindrical annuli. The swirl angle measurements were performed by flow visualization technique using smoke and dye liquid. By using the particle image velocimetry method. this study has found the time-mean velocity distribution and turbulent intensity with swirl for Re=20,000. 30.000. 50.000. and 70,000 along longitudinal sections. The results appear to be physically reasonable. Other experimental study was performed to investigate heat transfer characteristics of turbulent swirling air flow in axisymmetric annuli. The static pressure. the local air flow temperature, and the wall temperature with decaying swirl were measured by using thermocouples and the friction factor and the local Nusselt number were calculated for Re=30,000. 50,000 and 70000. The local Nusselt number was compared with that obtained from the Dittus-Boelter equation with swirl and without swirl, respectively. The results showed that the swirl enhances the heat transfer at the inlet and the outlet of the test tube.

  • This study aims to confirm the characteristics of low swirl combustion at our low swirl model combustor. To do it, it is experimentally conducted by evaluating the flame shape, stability region and emissions according to the swirl angle. The most significant feature of low swirl combustion is a occurrence of lifted flame. Such lifted flames happen to combine exquisitely propagating feature of premixed flame with diverging flow. This feature of lifted flame was confirmed through a velocity flow field and visualized the flame in this model combustor. The visualized flame was classified according to the thermal power and equivalence ratio. The variation study in swirl angles showed that the lean flammable limit could be extended only by swirl angles. Also, as the swirl angle increased, it was confirmed that the NOx and CO emissions were decreased due to the mixing enhancement and shorter resident time.

  • This paper shows numerical results for the estimation of the propulsor efficiency of Pre-Swirl Duct for 176k bulk carrier as well as its design method. Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes equations have been solved and the k-epsilon model applied for the turbulent closure. The propeller rotating motion is determined using a sliding mesh technique. The design process is divided into each part of Pre-Swirl Duct, duct and Pre-Swirl Stator. The design of duct was performed first because it is located further upstream than Pre-Swirl Stator. The distribution of velocity through the duct was analyzed and applied for the design of Pre-Swirl Stator. The design variables of duct include duct angle, diameter, and chord length. Diameter, chord length, equivalent angle are considered when designing the Pre-Swirl Stator. Furthermore, a variable pitch angle stator is applied for the final model of Pre-Swirl Duct. The largest reduction rate of the delivered power in model scale is 7.6%. Streamlines, axial and tangential velocities under the condition that the Pre-Swirl Duct is installed were reviewed to verify its performance.

  • This study was performed to calculate the swirl ratio of a diesel engine intake port by a 1D computer simulation under actual engine operating conditions. The swirl ratio of the intake port was simulated according to the change of the engine speed during the operation of the motoring without fuel injection. The swirl ratio of the intake port was simulated according to changes in the crank angle during the four-cycle operation of intake, compression, expansion and exhaust. The swirl ratio represented by the three regions of the piston, center and squish was simulated. Among the three regions, the piston-region swirl ratio is important for effective air-fuel mixing in the engine cylinder. In particular, it was confirmed during the simulation that the piston swirl ratio before and after the compression top dead center (TDC) point when fuel is injected in the DI diesel engine can have a significant effect on the mixing of air and fuel. It was desirable to set the average piston swirl ratio over a crank angle section before and after compression TDC as the representative swirl ratio of the cylinder head intake port according to the change of the engine speed.

  • This paper is the third investigation on the evaluation methods of flow characteristics in a steady flow bench. In the previous works, several assumptions used in the steady flow bench were examined and the flow characteristics were estimated both by the conventional impulse swirl meter and a particle image velocimetry at 1.75B position. From these works, it was concluded that the assumption of the solid rotation might cause serious problems and both of the eccentricity and the velocity profile distort the flow characteristics when using the ISM at 1.75B plane. Therefore, the understanding of the detail velocity profiles is very important to keep discussing the issues about the steady flow evaluation method. For this purpose, the planar velocity profiles were measure at 1.75B position by particle image velocimetry and the characteristics were examined according to the valve angles and lifts. The results show that the planar velocity profiles of 11, 16, $21^{\circ}$ valve angle heads according to the lift are similar to each other, however, that of $26^{\circ}$ angle is an exceptional case in the all aspects. In addition, the swirl behaviors are not apparent up to 6~8 mm lift under the $21^{\circ}$ angle and somewhat arranged motions are observed over the whole plane near the highest lift. At this point, the narrower the angle, the lower the lift at which the swirl motions become clear. On the other hands, when the angle is $26^{\circ}$, the center of swirl is always farthest from the cylinder center and only the indistinct swirl is observed even if at the highest lift. Also, all the swirl centers are quite apart from the cylinder center so that the effect of eccentricity may not be negligible at 1.75B regardless the valve angle. Related to the tangential velocity along with the radial direction, the bands of the velocity distribution are very wide and the mean velocities of cylinder center basis are lower than the velocity which is assumed in the ISM evaluation. Lastly, the mean tangential velocity profiles of swirl center basis are sometimes higher than that of ISM-assumed up to 0.6 non-dimensional distance less than 6mm lift, however, as the lift increases the profiles are different according to the angles and profile $11^{\circ}$ is the most closed to the ideal profile. Consequently, the real velocity profile is far from the assumption of ISM evaluation.

  • The flow characteristics of a swirl injector were investigated with the variation of the flow condition and geometric dimensions, such as orifice length for considering the viscous effect and tangential entry port area for considering the swirl intensity. The liquid film thickness strongly influencing on the formed drop size of the spray was measured using a new technique. The film thickness measurement technique proposed here, used the attenuation of fluorescence signal near the injector exit. The breakup length that is important for the flame location as well as the spray cone angle which influences on the ignition performance was measured using a backlit stroboscopic photography technique. From the experimental results, it is found that an increase in injection pressure decreased the film thickness and breakup length, and also enlarged the spray cone angle. A decrease in orifice length and tangential entry port area has a similar tendency of thinner film thickness, shorter breakup length and larger spray cone angle. In the present study, we proposed empirical models of the flow characteristics of the swirl injectors.

  • Many researchers have developed the measurement technique of in-cylinder flow. Recently, there are lots of studies on steady flow with different SCV geometries. In this study the flow characteristics of four-valve cylinder head were examined in a steady test rig for different SCV open ratios. Each swirl ratio of several SCV angle was quantified by swirl impulse meter and 2D-LDV measurement. The results showed that the swirl ratio was controlled between 2.3 and 3.8 based on SCV angles. The velocity distributions of in-cylinder flow field were measured by 2-D LDV test and visualized swirl and tumble flow pattern at different positions. In this engine , we found out that the swirl was dominant flow.

  • A general purpose program for the analysis of flows in a gas turbine combustor is developed. The program uses non-staggered grids based on finite volume method and the cartesian velocities as primitive variables. A flow inside the C-type diffuser is simulated to check the boundary fitted coordinate. The velocity profiles at cross section agree well with experimental results. A turbulent diffusion flame behind a bluff body is simulated for the combustion simulation. Simulated results show good agreement with experimental data. Finally, a turbulent flow with swirl in a gas turbine combustor was simulated. The results show two recirculating region and simulated velocity fields agree well with experimental data. The distance between two recirculating regions becomes shorter as swirl angle increases. Swirl angle changes angular momentum and streamlines in flow fields.
