  • To investigate the combustion characteristics of a swirling diffusion gas burner with oxygen enrichment, mean temperature, CO, $CO_2$, and HC concentrations were measured at various oxygen enrichment conditions. According to the results, the flame temperature increased and the region of high temperature was expanded with increasing oxygen concentration. The $CO_2$ concentrations increased, while the CO concentrations decreased in proportion to the increase of oxygen concentration. On the other hand, the HC concentrations were decreased and this tendency was very strong at the downstream of the combustor.

  • The spray characteristics of DISI injector has a great role in engine efficiency and emission. Thus, many researchers have been studied to investigate the spray characteristics of hollow cone type and slit type injector which are used in DISI engine. In this study, we tried to provide spray parameters which effect on the spray characteristics such as injection pressure, ambient pressure and ambient temperature. In addition, we calculated $t_b\;and\;t_c$ to investigate the break up mechanism of test injectors and also obtained $C_v$ to evaluate the spray characteristics. From this study, As the ambient pressure increases in case of slit injector, $C_v$ decreases.

  • The purpose of this research is to obtain the information of the development process of a vaporizing GDI spray using exciplex fluorecence method. Fluorobenzene/DEMA system was used as the exciplex-forming dopants. The 2-D spray images of liquid and vapor phases were acquired, and the behavior of both phases was analyzed by the image processing. The experiment was performed at the three different ambient perssures and the ambient temperature of 273K and 473K. As the result of this work, it was found that the development characteristics of GDI spray have stronger effect on the ambient pressure than on the ambient temperature. With an increase of ambient pressure, the distribution of vapor phase was decreased and the concentration of that was denser. Two regions, namely cone and mixing regions could be identified from those resulrs.

  • Cyclones have been extensively used in the industry for removing fine particles from the gaseous streams, based on simplicity in design and construction in association with low cost and flexibility to operate in extreme and harsh environments. However, industrial cyclones are typically not very efficient for particles smaller than 10μm. In this work, in order to improve the separation efficiency of reverse flow cyclones, a simple device named Post Cyclone(Poc) in installed on the top of an existing cyclone. Thereby the residual swirl present at the outlet (vortex finder) of a conventional cyclone has been used to capture the escaped dust from the cyclone in the PoC. The performance of PoC was closely evaluated by changing configuration of the PoC and operation condition. In addition, the dust behaviour in th PoC was investigated based on the hypothesis of residual vortex.

  • The parameters such as Richardson numbers or stability parameters are widely used to account for the extra straining effects due to three-dimensionality, curvature, rotation, swirl and others arising in paractical complex flows. Existing expressions for the extra strain in turbulence models such as $k-{\epsilon}$ models, however, do not satisfy the tensor invariant condition representing the coordinate indifference. In the present paper, considering the characteristics of both the mean strain rate and the mean vorticity, a new parameter to deal with the extra straining effects is proposed. The new parameter has a simple form and satisfies the tensor invariant condition. A semi-quantitative analysis between the present and previous parameters for several typical complex flows suggests that the newly proposed parameter is more general and adequate in representing the extra straining effects than the previous ad-hoc parameters.

  • The near field structures of an under-expanded, dual, coaxial, jets issuing from the coaxial nozzles with four different geometries are visualized by using a shadowgraph optical method. Experiments are conducted to investigate the effects of the nozzle-lip thickness, secondary stream thickness, the nozzle pressure ratio and the secondary swirl stream on the characteristics of under-expanded jets. The results show that the presence of secondary annular swirling stream causes the Mach disk to move further downstream and increases its diameter, which decreases with a decrease in the nozzle-lip thickness. The secondary stream thickness has an influence on the location of an annular shock wave.

  • An experimental study was performed to investigate the effect of swirl condition and secondary air rate on the Ion voltage and CO emission characteristics. In this study, the combustion characteristics were investigated with the variation of swirler diameter, vane angle, suction air rate. The result of this study, the Ion voltage increase with increasing the diameter of the swirler. Additionally with increasing the suction air rate, the Ion voltage is the same. The CO concentration depends on suction air rate. In the other hand, it is almost unaffected by swirler's diameter. The flame length and Ion voltage decease with decreasing O2 percentage of surrounding air.

  • This paper describes the effects of combustion parameters on the characteristics of combustion products in swirling flow furnace. The concentration of combustion products and temperature distribution of flow field in the furnace have been investigated by numerical method. The fuel was injected into the furnace and the swirling device was constructed with three kinds of vane swirler at inlet port of furnace. The results of this study showed that the effect of combustion parameters on the concentration characteristics of carbon monoxide and nitrogen monoxide of combustion products. It was found that the pollutant formation wad dependent on the equivalence ratio and swirl intensity level.

  • A model for the prediction of combustion and exhaust emissions of DI diesel engine has been formulated and developed . This model is a quasi-dimensional phenomenological one and is based on multi-zone combustion modelling concept. It takes into consideration, on a zonal basis ,detailed of fuel spray formation, droplet evaporation, air-fuel mixing, spray wall interaction, swirl , heat transfer, self ignition and burning rate . The emission model is considered with chemical equipment , as well as the kinetics of fuel. NO and soot reactions in order to calculate the pollutant concentrations within each zone and the whole of cylinder . The accuracy of prediction versus experimental data and the capability of the model in predicting engine heat release, cylinder pressure and all the major exhaust emissions on zonal and cumulative basis., is demonstrated. Detailed prediction results showing the sensitivity of the model bv various injection rates are presented and discussed.

  • Mixing vanes have been installed in the space grid of nuclear fuel rod bundle to improve turbulent heat transfer. Split mixing vanes induce the vortex flow in the cooling water to swirl in sub-channel of fuel assembly. But, The swirling flow decays rapidly so that the heat transfer enhancing effect limited to short length after the mixing vane. In the present study, the large scale vortex flow (LSVF) is generated by rearranging the mixing vanes to the coordinated directions. This LSVF mixing vanes generate the most strong secondary flow vortices which maintain about $35D_h$ after the spacer grid. The streamwise vorticity generated by LSVF sustain two times more than that split mixing vane.
