  • Numerical analysis of 150kW Huels-type arc jet was performed using compressible Navier-Stokes CFD code. To consider chemical reaction by high temperature, the flow was assumed to be chemical equilibrium states. As a turbulence and a radiation model, the two-equation k-epsilon model and the 3-band radiation model were adopted, respectively. Mass flow rate and current density were given as conditions for calculations. In this study, two kinds of mechanisms for injection of air flow wire considered. One is that air is provided by left wall surface and the other is that air is injected from upper wall surface. The pressure, density and temperature contours of two cases were compared and heat transfer rates were estimated. The numerical results of two cases were not much different to each other. However, in real 150KW device, air is injected from upper wall surface with swirl. To calculate more accurately, swirl effect is must be considered.

  • In order to investigate the reduction of NO emissions, natural gas was fueled for two-stage combustion apparatus. NO and CO emissions were described by five variables: total air ratio, primary air ratio, secondary air injection position, secondary air injection velocity, and swirl ratio. It was mainly observed that, as the primary air ratios of 0 and 0.4 NO emission decreased with increasing the secondary air injection position and secondary air injection velocity. The effect of weak swirl on NO emission was found to be insignificant.

  • Experiments were conducted in a large-scale Ward-type tornado simulator to study tornado-like vortices. Both flow velocities and the pressures at the surface beneath the vortices were measured. An interpretation of these measurements enabled an assessment of the mean flow field as well as the mean and fluctuating characteristics of the surface pressure deficit, which is a manifestation of the flow fluctuation aloft. An emphasis was placed on the effect of the aspect ratio of the tornado simulator on the characteristics of the simulated flow and the corresponding surface pressure deficit, especially the evolution of these characteristics due to the transition of the flow from a single-celled vortex to a two-celled vortex with increasing swirl ratio.

  • In this study the effect of collision model was evaluated in spray field by CFD. A collision is basically the interaction between droplets and criteria of collision is determined by drop Weber number, impact parameter, and drop-size ratio. Early developed collision model considered coalescence and grazing collision with the exchange of momentum. However in experimental research there were bouncing, coalescence, reflexive separating and stretching separating in interaction between droplets. In this study the collision considering such complex phenomena is modeled and was compared with the basic collision model.

  • The objective of this work is to investigate the effect of swirl, injection pressure and pilot injection on D.I.Diesel combustion by using a transparent engine system. The test engine is equipped with common rail injection system to obtain high pressure and to control injection timing and duration. In this study, the combustion analysis and steady flow test were conducted to estimate the heat release rate from in-cylinder pressure and pilot injection was investigated by using LII technique. As the results, high injection pressure was found to shorten ignition delay as well as enhance peak pressure and heat release rate was greatly affected by injection timing and pilot injection. In addition, the results showed that the period of soot formation corresponded to the diffusion flame.

  • Oxygen has been used extensively in various industries for many years. Despite earlier successful attempts to use oxygen in industrial combustion furnaces, its full theoretical researches have only recently begun to be realized. The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of oxygen enriched combustion. This paper analyzes the characteristics of oxygen enriched combustion, and deals with the experimental investigation of the flame temperature and NOx concentration in exhaust gas. The flame temperature, concentration of exhaust gas were measured and flame configurations were photographed according to the variation of oxygen concentrations in oxidizer.

  • The common method to improve heat transfer in Nuclear fuel rod bundle is install a mixing vane in space grid. The previous split mixing vane is guides cooling water to swirl flow in sub-channel of fuel assembly. But, this swirl flow decade rapidly after mixing vane and the effect of enhancing the heat transfer vanish behind this short region. The large scale secondary vortex flow was generated by rearranging the inclined angle direction of mixing vanes to the coordinated directions. This LSVF mixing vanes generate the most strong secondary flow vortices which maintain about 35 $D_H$ after the spacer grid and the streamwise vorticity in subchannel with LSVF mixing vane sustain two times more than that in subchannel with split mixing vane. The turbulent kinetic energy and the Reynolds stresses generated by the mixing vanes have nearly same scales but maintain twice more than previous type.

  • This study has been mainly motivated to numerically model the supercritical mixing and combustion processes encountered in the liquid propellant rocket engines. In the present approach, turbulence is represented by the standard k-e model. To account for the real fluid effects, the propellant mixture properties are calculated by using generalized cubic equation of state. In order to realistically represent the turbulence-chemistry interaction in the turbulent nonpremixed flames, the flamelet approach based on the real fluid flamelet library has been adopted. Based on numerical results, the detailed discussions are made for the effects of swirl on flame structure of supercritical kerosene liquid propellant combustion.

  • The spray characteristics of coaxial swirl injector under ambient high pressure conditions were investigated in this paper. Three injectors were used to study the effect of recess length and fuel injector type(open or closed). In this research, experimental conditions(ambient gas density) were calculated by Buckingham Pi-theory and spray characteristics of the injectors were represented by mass flow rate according to the injection pressure, the spray angle, mass distribution, and mean diameter of droplet.

  • The present study aims to investigate quantitatively the hydrodynamic effect on combustion process of pulverized coal particles in large scale combustion chamber using computational analysis, with a general purpose computational fluid dynamics code. Burner hydrodynamics include swirl and turbulence intensity from the burner. To understand the phenomena which are difficult to observe how flow has influence on the combustion process, comparative effect of combustion related coal properties and hydrodynamics is evaluated on flame formation and development in burner flames.
