Exploring a zero food waste system for sustainable residential buildings in urban areas

  • This study explores the environmentally innovative and low-impact technology, a zero food waste system (ZFWS) that utilizes food waste and converts it into composts or biofuels and curtails carbon emissions. The ZFWS not just achieves food waste reductions but recycles food waste into fertilizer. Based on a fermentation-extinction technique using bio wood chips, the ZFWS was employed in a field experiment of the system installed in a large-scale apartment complex, and the performance of the system was examined. The on-site ZFWS consisted of three primary parts: 1) a food waste slot into which food waste was injected; 2) a fermentation-extinction reactor where food waste was mixed with bio wood chips made up of complex enzyme and aseptic wood chips; and 3) deodorization equipment in which an ultraviolet and ozone photolysis method was employed. The field experiment showed that food waste injected into the ZFWS was reduced by 94%. Overall microbial activity of the food waste in the fermentation-extinction reactor was measured using adenosine tri-phosphate (ATP), and the degradation rate of organic compounds, referred to as volatile solids, increased with ATP concentration. The by-products generated from ZFWS comply with the national standard for organic fertilizer.

  • The purpose of this study is to develop the feasibility of movable partition wall components that are able to correspond changes of structure system and spatial configuration by the needs of residents for the activation of long-life housing. The key element of various movable partition wall components, a movable partition wall, was analyzed for problems through both as-is analysis and field installation in Korea and Japan, and then its feasibility was verified. The movable partition wall can break the uniformity of a fixed one, can integrate and separate limited space by changes in the demands of residents, can be easy to separate, and can be independent. The development of the movable partition wall is important for the realization of diverse residential space, ease of remodeling, environment adaptation, promotion of modularization, etc. It is comprised of surfacing materials, core materials, structural materials, and movable parts. The domestic movable partition wall was verified regarding the feasibility of an apartment house through on-site inspections and sound insulation tests by KOHP21, KICT. In conclusion, the construction of long-life housing that has sustainable values in the use of housing is nationally an important assignment, so as to secure good housing stock.

  • The domestic industry of construction is requiring an application building concept which could be one of the solution to the environment problem sand to the sustainability of development. It means that the consideration of the housing from a environmental friendly point of view is importantly necessary all things and the housing should be planned or responding to the concept of a environmental friendly planing. For this reason, the purpose of this study is to derive the design elements for the environmental friendly housing and to choose the priority element and to bring the planning guideline for the environmental friendly housing. The purpose of this study is to identify pro-environmental attitude of environment-friendly apartment residents, to examine importance of environment-friendly planning features, and to examine environment-friendly planning features according to residents' environmental perception. and now i suggest that important improvement direction by housing estates be accessed and analyzed through environmental approach, because environmentally friendly paradigm is one of the most effective and fundamental methods for developing housing estates.

  • As outdoor environment become worse due to concentration of population in large cities, the importance of environmental control strategies such as the arrangement of green space or water space and ventilation paths, has been increasingly recognized. However, most of the studies focus on the assessment on outdoor thermal environment, few studies focus on the interrelationship between thermal environment in residential block and human thermal comfort. The aims of this study is to develop the outdoor planning method to reduce the heating/cooling load in an apartment unit or entire block by the sustainable approaches in outdoor environmental design. In this paper, on the basis of the prior studies, the effect of the outdoor thermal environment on human thermal comfort will be analysed.

환경부하 저감을 위한 기후순응주거 사례연구 (A Case Study on the Acclimatization's Housing for Environmental Load Reduction)

  • The concept of sustainable development to preserve natural environment through economy in resources and energy is gradually distinguished since environmental problems as a series of air pollution and global warming take place now. Building occupies more than 1/3 of energy consumption in the whole world. Energy consumption of buildings caused a quick increase in the amount of energy use by air conditioning, which has a lot of effects on exhaustion of fossil energy as well as an increase in environmental load. Therefore, this research intends to suggest characteristics and direction for the designing of acclimatization's housing through the case study on acclimatization's housing. Acclimatization's housing is designed to reduce building load from the designing stage unlike green home or low-energy apartment. Also, factors which are commonly applied to acclimatization's housing are applied complexly by design strategic factors of Heating, Cooling and Lighting. The applied design factors make effects mutually and complexly. In addition, design strategy showed different priority by designing direction.

  • Researches and developments on BEMS are performed world-widely through sustainable management in various conditions. However, there are many obstacles to adapt the system in existing buildings because it needs highly expensive equipments, which are designed for newly built buildings, to install. Therefore, there are numerous limits exist when applying the BEMS in established buildings. The purpose of this study estimates the optimization of RF output power in WSN(Wireless Sensor Networks), which is the essential technology to develop PEMS. The results of this study is as follows ; 1) Applying WSN technique in buildings was possible. 2) As RF output power increases, the number of relay node reduced, therefore, the WSN showed more stability. 3) When estimating optimal RF output power in school, it should be considered between the number of relay node and RF output power. 4) Considering battery consumption and possibility of reception, the best suited RF output power is -20dbm in apartment house.

2000년대 한국 아파트 단위세대의 공간구성 동향 변화 (Trend Changes of Spatial Configuration in Housing Units of Korean Apartments in the 2000s)

  • This study aims at finding the trend changes of spatial configuration in housing units of Korean apartments in the 2000s. Among the housing units in the apartments built by large construction companies, we have selected ones with small and regular sizes, $59m^2$ and $84m^2$ respectively, and investigated the number of bays, the location of wet zone and the spatial flexibility in the housing units selected for analysis. In conclusion, the number of bays in the housing unit has gradually increased, after allowing for the structural change of the balcony in the legal. It is estimated that the trend has came from the intent to increase the numbers of the externally exposed surfaces of the balcony, ensure a good view, lighting, ventilation and spatial flexibility. The location of wet zone, water-needed space such as a bathroom or a kitchen, has changed in the direction to facilitate the expansion and modification of space. Variable range of space has gradually expanded by using the balcony and wet zone as much as possible. In order to configure more effectively spaces in housing environments, the future study should be implemented to develop tools for realizing sustainable housing environment at the levels of not only the housing unit. but also the entire building, housing site, and city.

  • Converting vacant lands for urban agriculture has become a popular topic for American cities to engage in on a program and policy level. The advocates of urban agriculture cite a number of potential benefits, ranging from promoting sustainable urban development, fostering social interaction and educational opportunities, regenerating neighborhoods, and empowering residents. With the emergence of vacant lands in South Korea, different strategies have been implemented for productive use. Nonetheless, less attention has been paid to reinvent vacant lands for urban agriculture. Therefore, this study has examined the case of the City of Milwaukee's vacant land initiatives and programs that were known to have brought a series of positive neighborhood revitalization outcomes. Compared to the case of Milwaukee, intensive land use and high property prices have turned to be the major actors that prevent an active use of vacant land for urban agriculture within the context of South Korean cities. Thus, this paper proposes the possibility of using vacant lands in apartment complexes for urban agriculture.

소형주택의 친환경건축물 인증기준 개선방향에 관한 연구 -LEED for Homes와의 비교를 중심으로- (A Study on the Improvement of the Green Building Certification Criteria for Detached Houses - Focusing on Comparisons of LEED for Homes -)

  • The purpose of this study is to generate implications for the Green Building Certification System(GBCS) for detached houses, by comparing LEED for homes. Detached houses were added to the GBCS and took an effect this year. They are evaluated by the GBCS under special conditions, because they are designed by small architectural offices with limited budget. In this respect, this paper points out the problems of the GBCS for these detached houses and highlights some areas to be improved. As the first step, the definition of sustainable building and the design method of green building were investigated. By doing so, this study acknowledges the potential analysis methods in making valid comparisons with LEED for homes. Secondly, this study makes a comparative analysis of the GBCS for detached houses and the GBCS for apartment houses, LEED for New Construction(NC) and LEED for houses. Lastly, it identifies the problems and suggests better ways to improve the GBCS for detached houses through integrated analysis of the GBCS and LEED.

  • This research investigates the life-cycle energy consumption of the windows used for the building's exterior cladding, and its environmental potential aspects by utilizing the LCA. The research scope has taken account of the entire life-cycle of the windows from the extraction of raw materials to its disposal, of which given sample building type is an apartment building. Results gained from the LCA of the windows as one of the steps in analysis reflects the current global interest and analysis trend towards the world's environmental issue on all fields of industry including the architectural industry, of which its newly established standards of architectural windows can further promote more environmentally sustainable factor compared to the previous analysis (focused more on energy efficiency assessment of the use stage).
