The aim of this study was to analyze the potential for timber harvesting in the Hongchoen Garisan Leading Forest Management Complex in the national forests, and to suggest an optimal target yield for sustainable timber harvesting. The potential for timber harvesting was assessed by analyzing the area available for timber harvesting using GIS spatial analysis, but excluding areas with a slope of more than 40° (topographical constraints), areas within 30 m on both sides of streams (environmental constraints), and areas more than 300 m away from forest roads (technical constraints). The analysis identified 3,298 ha (49%) of the total complex area of 6,679 ha as available for timber harvesting, yielding a potential harvesting volume of 608,613 m3. In the case of coniferous plantations, the potential harvesting volume was 409,721 m3, which was a very high level that accounted for 67.3% of the total. We also conducted an optimization analysis to minimize the differences in area between age classes, while maintaining sustainable timber harvesting for the next 50 years. An annual average of 41.9 ha (7,988 m3) was determined to be the optimal timber yield, and in this case, it was possible to convert the age class structure to a more stable structure after 50 years.

Stainless steel bolts (SSB) are increasingly utilized in bolted steel connections due to their good mechanical performance and excellent corrosion resistance. Fire accidents, which commonly occur in engineering scenarios, pose a significant threat to the safety of steel frames. The post-fire behavior of SSB has a significant influence on the structural integrity of steel frames, and neglecting the effect of temperature can lead to serious accidents in engineering. Therefore, it is important to evaluate the performance of SSB at elevated temperatures and their residual strength after a fire incident. To investigate the mechanical behavior of SSB after fire, 114 bolts with grades A4-70 and A4-80, manufactured from 316L austenitic stainless steel, were subjected to elevated temperatures ranging from 20℃ to 1200℃. Two different cooling methods commonly employed in engineering, namely cooling at ambient temperatures (air cooling) and cooling in water (water cooling), were used to cool the bolts. Tensile tests were performed to examine the influence of elevated temperatures and cooling methods on the mechanical behavior of SSB. The results indicate that the temperature does not significantly affect the Young's modulus and the ultimate strength of SSB. Up to 500℃, the yield strength increases with temperature, but this trend reverses when the temperature exceeds 500℃. In contrast, the ultimate strain shows the opposite trend. The strain hardening exponent is not significantly influenced by the temperature until it reaches 500℃. The cooling methods employed have an insignificant impact on the performance of SSB. When compared to high-strength bolts, 316L austenitic SSB demonstrate superior fire resistance. Design models for the post-fire mechanical behavior of 316L austenitic SSB, encompassing parameters such as the elasticity modulus, yield strength, ultimate strength, ultimate strain, and strain hardening exponent, are proposed, and a more precise stress-strain model is recommended to predict the mechanical behavior of 316L austenitic SSB after a fire incident.
Abalone aquaculture has developed very rapidly in Korea. Until the mid 1990s it has annually produced about 100 tons. Since then the yield has increased to about 9,000 tons in 2012. The amount accounts for 20% of the global abalone yield. About 86% of produced abalone is consumed domestically and the rest is exported. 100 tons for export seemed as an unattainable goal back in 2003. However, the export rose up to 1,333 tons in 2012. Despite its rapid growth, Korean abalone industry is faced with some problems. The first is the slowdown of yield increase rates. Abalone production increased by 50~60% until the mid 2000. However, the rate continued to drop to below 10%. Reasons behind the slow increase are deteriorating aquaculture grounds and worsening market problems. Constant aquaculture aggravated productivity and overcrowded facilities at a limited space made matters worse. Moreover, abalone export has stalled and so did domestic consumption. In the meantime, rising mortality of young abalone has lowered productivity at abalone breeding places. The mortality rates of abalone remained below 5% in the early 2000s but rose to 30~40% these days. This translates into rising abalone prices. The market problems imply stagnant or shrinking export as well as domestic consumption. The export increase rates took a nosedive from 200 to below 50 between the early 2000s and the late 2000s. Moreover, the increase rates of domestic consumption have become remarkably sluggish. According to, it stood at 50~60% in the mid 2000s but continued to decrease after 2008. These problems, in turn, affected the size of abalone. The usual abalone size for market was 10~12 shells per kg, but recently the size became smaller and smaller to 15~16 shells per kg. The change of size implies shift in consumption patterns: Consumers not only eat live abalone but also they cook soup with it. The size of abalone for uncooked dish is usually very big, like 10~12 shells per kg. In contrast, smaller abalone, such as 20~25 shells per kg, are used for making soup. Increasing use of smaller abalone leads to lower income of abalone aquaculture households. This is partly because that the size determines the price and the price gap between big abalones and smaller ones is extreme in Korea. For the sustainable growth of Korean abalone industry, we need to come up with strategies. First, a reasonable production system needs to be in place, especially for better management of abalone aquaculture grounds. Management of abalone licenses is also necessary because local governments issue relevant licenses as well as supervising abalone grounds. Second, abalone export destination need to be diversified. Japan, the major importer of Korean abalone, takes up a lion's share of export, at 95%. Third, new consumption style of abalone needs to be developed. Abalone used to be consumed as 'raw type' or Sashimi in Korea. This sole type of consumption hampers the growth of abalone market. Moreover, more strategies are needed to encourage and distribute home cooking of abalone rather than eating-out at restaurants. Last but not least, distribution system should be improved for better delivery of live abalone.
The primary concern on fertilizer recommendations on paddy soils in Korea is not high rice yield but high rice quality, sustainable rice yield, and less environmental loads these days. Based on soil survey data, the paddy soils in Korea were classified into five large management types ; normal, sandy, immatured, poorly drained, saline soil. In order to establish the optimum level of nitrogen fertilizer to increase the rate of head rice yield, field experiments were conducted at 24 farmhouses throughout the country with nitrogen fertilizer treatment levels of 0, 50, 70, 90, 110, 140, $170kg\;ha^{-1}$ from 2003 to 2004. As the result of the experiment, the optimum rates of nitrogen fertilizer for improving rice quality were $90kg\;ha^{-1}$ in normal, sandy, and poorly drained soils, $100kg\;ha^{-1}$ in immatured soils, and $112kg\;ha^{-1}$ in saline soils where the content of NaCl in soil was below 0.1%. The optimum rates of nitrogen fertilizer were determined in view of head rice percent, protein content, and palatability value of rice.

Corbicula japonica, belonging to Other Veneroida Family Corbiculidae, was distributed in the freshwater and brackish rivers, where was a sandy and shallow depth. Catch of C. japonica in the Seomjin River occupied at a large portion of the catch in Kyungnam Province, which was about 30% of total catch in Korea. C. japonica has little studied on biomass, scientific resources assessment and management, because of inaccurate catch report data in the Seojin River. In this study, we conducted scientific and systematic approaches under data limited situation with application of the potential fishery yield system for sustainable fisheries resources management. Estimation system of the potential fishery yield was consisted of 5 tier system. We have used to tier 1 and 2 which were demanded higher level of information than the other tiers. The potential fishery yields were estimated 77.66ton for tier 1 using commercial fishery-dependent data, and 129.82ton for tier 2 with fishery-independent survey data.

This research evaluated the long-term application effects of different soil amendments on yield, dissolved organic carbon, nitrogen and soil organic carbon stock in rice paddy. The experiment consisted of four different fertilizations; Inorganic fertilization (NPK), NPK+Lime (NPKL), NPK+Silicate (NPKS), NPK+Compost (NPKC). There was no significant difference in rice yield between the treatment groups in 1995, but the rice yields in the NPKL and NPKC treatments in 2019 increased by 4.3% and 14.3% compared to NPK. In terms of soil properties, the pH of NPKS(6.7) and NPKL(6.4) in 2019 increased the most compared to the soil pH before experiment(5.2). The organic matter(OM) content from NPKC treatment increased upto 34 and 27 g kg-1 in year of 1995 and 2019, respectively, compared to before the test. In NPKS and NPKL treatment, labile carbon and nitrogen content, used as a soil quality indicator, increased by 1.1-1.9 times over the control. From these result, it is suggested that type and application rate of soil amendment should be determined based on the soil analysis before cultivation for sustainable agricultural environment and productivity.

The purpose of this paper is to do GIS-based suitable site selection using Scope for Growth index of Styela clava in Jindong Bay. The aquaculture of Styela calva is only conducted in Korea, especially Jindong Bay. Suspended culture of Styela clava was initiated in 2001 and the annual production reached 15,084M/T, but declined to 1,412M/T in 2005. The annual production was increased slightly to 2,484M/T in 2012 but the production is lower than the beginning yield. Scope for Growth(SFG) can indicate interrelationships between environment and organism growth index in aquaculture. GIS-based suitable site selection can be available by the concept of SFG, and fishery management system can be constructed for the sustainable production. As a result of the assessment of habitat suitability, Jindong Bay's SFG value ranges 0.054~0.57J/day and Styela clava farm's SFG values range 0.054~0.57J/day, either. The correlation between Styela clava farm's SFG and the actual production has a good result, as r=0.786, p<0.05. The construction of fishery management system using habitat suitability index ensures the reasonable site selection and the sustainable production in aquaculture farm. It introduces an objective method for the interrelationships between the environmental variation and the organism growth. Consequently, it can promote the decision making practices for the sustainable fishery management.
Vicia angustifolia L. is native plant of winter annual leguminous weed in Korea. Objective of this research was to investigate the effects of V. angustifolia as green manure for rice production in sustainable agriculture. Seed size of V. angustifolia was smaller than that hairy vetch as control plant, while seed number in same amount was approximately 1.4-fold higher. V. angustifolia started stem elongation in early April. In addition, flowering and dead-ripe stages of the plant reached at May $5^{th}$ and June $1^{st}$, respectively. Growth of V. angustifolia-barley mixed cropping system in upland was promoted up to 101 cm of plant length compared to 46.6 to 60.9 cm that grown in paddy. Biomass yield of V. angustifolia was 14.5 kg $ha^{-1}$ in single cropping system of paddy soil, and the amount of nitrogen was 65 kg $ha^{-1}$. Moreover, self-reseedling of fallen seed from V. angustifolia grown in previous year in paddy soil was significantly higher than that hairy vetch plant. These results suggested that V. angustifolia can be uses as green manure in addition to reducing the mineral fertilizer application in rice production for sustainable agriculture.

We analyzed the landuse change, quantify the area covered by majors food crops (Paddy, Wheat, Barely, Maize, Millet and Potato) and their productivity trends in Terai, Nepal from 1987 to 2006. We used series of area covered by each single crop and production data published by Government of Nepal, Central Bureau of Statistics and Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives. Our results indicated that the agriculture land has increased by about 47% while forest has decreased by 32% between 1964 and 2001 in Terai. Whilst the total cropped area has increased by 19% between 1987 and 2006. The highest incremental change has observed in Potato by 234% followed by Wheat 31%, Maize 20% and Paddy 12% and so on. However, data revealed with very low crops productivity and it showed less than half of its potential except in Potato. The average yield of food crops /hectare /year during last 20 year has found only 3.094 metric tons. Only Potato has gained high average yield by 10.34 metric tons. While others crops yielded entirely low. 3 periods moving average depicted that the productivity trend of Barely and Millet has stagnant while others crops showed slightly up and down and increasing steadily over time. Further study is needed to comprehend the linkage of food productivity in the present food supply to demand and food security system in Terai, Nepal.
One of the challenges to increase milk production in a large pasture-based herd with an automatic milking system (AMS) is to grow forages within a 1- km radius, as increases in walking distance increases milking interval and reduces yield. The main objective of this study was to explore sustainable forage option technologies that can supply high amount of grazeable forages for AMS herds using the Agricultural Production Systems Simulator (APSIM) model. Three different basic simulation scenarios (with irrigation) were carried out using forage crops (namely maize, soybean and sorghum) for the spring-summer period. Subsequent crops in the three scenarios were forage rape over-sown with ryegrass. Each individual simulation was run using actual climatic records for the period from 1900 to 2010. Simulated highest forage yields in maize, soybean and sorghum- (each followed by forage rape-ryegrass) based rotations were 28.2, 22.9, and 19.3 t dry matter/ha, respectively. The simulations suggested that the irrigation requirement could increase by up to 18%, 16%, and 17% respectively in those rotations in El-Nino years compared to neutral years. On the other hand, irrigation requirement could increase by up to 25%, 23%, and 32% in maize, soybean and sorghum based rotations in El-Nino years compared to La-Nina years. However, irrigation requirement could decrease by up to 8%, 7%, and 13% in maize, soybean and sorghum based rotations in La-Nina years compared to neutral years. The major implication of this study is that APSIM models have potentials in devising preferred forage options to maximise grazeable forage yield which may create the opportunity to grow more forage in small areas around the AMS which in turn will minimise walking distance and milking interval and thus increase milk production. Our analyses also suggest that simulation analysis may provide decision support during climatic uncertainty.
