This research describes the development model and testing of a hybrid damper which can be applicable to a vehicle suspension. The hybrid damper is devised to improve the performance of a conventional passive oil damper using a magneto-rheological (MR) accumulator which consists of a gas accumulator and a MR device. The level of damping is continuously variable by the means of control in the applied current in a MR device fitted to a floating piston which separates the gas and the oil chamber. A simple MR device is used to resist the movement of floating piston. At first a mathematical model which describes all flows within the conventional oil damper is formulated, and then a small MR device is also devised and adopted to a mathematical model to characterize the performance of the device.
We present a short review for authors' previous work on direct numerical simulations for inertialess hard particle suspensions formulated either with a Newtonian fluid or with viscoelastic polymeric fluids to understand the microstructural evolution and the bulk material behavior. We employ two well-defined bi-periodic domain concepts such that a single cell problem with a small number of particles may represent a large number of repeated structures: one is the sliding bi-periodic frame for simple shear flow and the other is the extensional bi-periodic frame for planar elongational flow. For implicit treatment of hydrodynamic interaction between particle and fluid, we use the finite-element/fictitious-domain method similar to the distributed Lagrangian multiplier (DLM) method together with the rigid ring description. The bi-periodic boundary conditions can be effectively incorportated as constraint equations and implemented by Lagrangian multipliers. The bulk stress can be evaluated by simple boundary integrals of stresslets on the particle boundary in such formulations. Some 2-D example results are presented to show effects of the solid fraction and the particle configuration on the shear and elongational viscosity along with the micro-structural evolution for both particles and fluid. Effects of the fluid elasticity has been also presented.

The durability test, along with the crashworthiness test, requires the most time and expense in the vehicle development process. The durability design using CAE tools reduces the time required for both the durability test and actual vehicle production. Existing dynamic stress analyses designed fir the analysis of vehicle fatigue mainly calculate the dynamic stress history and fatigue after performing dynamic analysis and stress analysis with relevant software applications and then superpositioning the dynamic load history and stress influence coefficient at each joint. This approach is a complex process, taking into account the flexibility of the parts. It is, however, incapable of giving accurate consideration to the contacts between components, the non-linearity of materials, and tire-road surface interactions. This approach also requires that the analysts have an expertise in software applications of various kinds or an expert in each area must perform the analysis. This requires as a great deal of manpower and time. In order to complement the existing approaches for dynamic stress analysis, this study aims at the following: (1) to suggest the simple and accurate analysis technique which is capable of producing all the possible necessary results; (2) to reduce dramatically the time and manpower needed to construct a model designed to analyze dynamics, quasi-static stress, and fatigue; and (3) to enable an accurate analysis of fatigue by improving the accuracy of dynamic stress. we verify the presented analysis method through durability evaluation of the knuckle of passenger car.
The ride and noise characteristics of a vehicle are significantly affected by the vibration transferred to the body through the chassis mounting points in the engine and suspension. It is known that body attachment stiffness is an important factor of idle noise and road noise for NVH performance improvement. The body attachment stiffness serves as a route design aimed at isolating the vibration generated inside the car due to the exciting force of the engine or road. The test result of the body attachment stiffness is shown in the FRF curve data; the stiffness level and sensitive frequency band are recorded by the data distribution. The stiffness data is used for analyzing the parts that fail to meet the target stiffness at a pertinent frequency band. The analysis shows that the target frequency band is between 200 and 500 Hz. As a result of the comparison in a mounted suspension, the analysis data is comparable to the test data. From these results, there is a general agreement between the predicted and measured responses. This procedure makes it possible to find the weak points before a proto car is produced, and to suggest proper design guidelines in order to improve the stiffness of the body structure.
The classical two-degree-of-freedom (2-d-o-f) "sectional model" is of common use to study the dynamics of suspension bridges. It takes into account the first pair of vertical and torsional modes of the bridge and describes well global oscillations caused by wind actions on the deck, yielding very useful information on the overall behaviour and the aerodynamic and aeroelastic response; however, it does not consider relative oscillations between main cables and deck. On the contrary, the 4-d-o-f model described in the two Parts of this paper includes longitudinal deformability of the hangers (assumed linear elastic in tension and unable to react in compression) and thus allows to take into account not only global oscillations, but also relative oscillations between main cables and deck. In particular, when the hangers go slack, large nonlinear oscillations are possible; if the hangers remain taut, the oscillations remain small and essentially linear: the latter behaviour has been the specific object of Part I (Sepe and Augusti 2001), while the present Part II investigates the nonlinear behaviour (coexisting large and/or small amplitude oscillations) under harmonic actions on the cables and/or on the deck, such as might be generated by vortex shedding. Because of the discontinuities and strong nonlinearity of the governing equations, the response has been investigated numerically. The results obtained for sample values of mechanical and forcing parameters seems to confirm that relative oscillations cannot a priori be excluded for very long span bridges under wind-induced loads, and they can stimulate a discussion on the actual possibility of such phenomena.

In this study, the modeling support system was developed which can make easy and fast FE-modeling and verify the results of static and durability analysis for the lower arm, one of the important parts in automobile suspension module. It took into account of the whole complicated design processes verifying the durability coefficients evaluated by fatigue analysis, which should be used to satisfy a design criteria. To guide the FE-modeling the drive page was constructed by using HTML and XML, which was based on expert's know-hows. It is able to integrate the processes to design the lower arm in practice, so that the standardization of its FE-Modeling is achieved, consequently. The 3 dimensional CAD's geometrical data were changed automatically into pre-defined shell elements under the concept of mesh-offset technique, and then welding elements were treated to connect between target and basic surfaces constructed by the shell elements. This system has also a user interface to control boundary and load ing conditions applied in performing of the static and durability analysis, in which many load cases can be applied simply with the MPCs driven by just few mouse clicks. These were implemented on the platform of MSC.Patran and utilized ANSYS, MSC.Nastran and MSC.Fatigue as the solver of the analysis performed. The developed system brings not only significant decreasing of man-hours required in FE-modeling process, but also obtaining of satisfied qualities in analyzed results. It will be integrated in a part of virtual prototyping module of the developing e-engineering framework.

This study presents full vehicle dynamics model for the dynamic characteristic analysis of chassis parts which are suspension and brake system. This vehicle dynamics model is appled to kinematics and quasi-static analysis for each chassis part. In order to develop the vehicle dynamics model, the parameters of each chassis element part which are bush, spring and damper are measured by experiment. Also the wheel forces and moments of 6 DOF are measured at each wheel center. These data are applied to input parameter for vehicle dynamics model. And the verification of the developed model is achieved to comparison with the experimental force data of spring, trailing arm and assist arm by using the load response by strain gauge. These experimental force data are acquired by road test at event surfaces of P/G which are belgian and chuck holes roads.
Low cycle fatigue characteristics are very important in the development of automobile suspension parts. Fatigue properties using the strain life approach are usually obtained from low cycle fatigue tests. However, low cycle fatigue testing requires a lot of time and cost. In the current study, an attempt to estimate low cycle fatigue properties of high strength steel sheet from tensile test and tensile simulations is performed. In addition, low cycle fatigue testing was conducted to compare the fatigue properties obtained from tensile testing and simulations. In conclusion, the results effectively predict the low cycle fatigue properties. However, some deviations still exist.

Semi-solid processing is now becoming of great interest for the production of various parts by pressure die casting. Many advantages are associated with this forming process at the condition that the forming operation is performed under appropriate conditions. The thixoforming process, which needs a suspension of a globular, non-dendritic solid phase in the liquid phase, is characterized by three major steps. The first step is casting of billets with a microstructure suited for thixoforming. The second step is reheating of slugs cut from these billets. The third step is injection of the semi-solid slugs into a die. In this paper, the horizontal reheating machine to obtain the optimal conditions suitable for semiu-solid die casting process was used and applied to extrusion material. It is estimated the possibility of application on semi-solid die casting with extrusion material through various results.
Severe gray mold neck rot of onion occurred in most farmers' fields in the southern part of Korea, and 20∼50% of onions were infected by the disease at Goheung, Chonnam, in 1994. Symptoms of the disease appeared on the lower leaves near the soil surface in late February. The symptoms initially appeared as yellowish blotch with compact gray mold on the surface of the infected leaves and developed to blast of the aboveground parts of onions. As brown to dark brown symptoms progressed around the necks of onion later, the bulbs were rotting gradually. Botrytis sp. repeatedly isolated from the lesions produced the typical symptom on the neck of healthy onion 7 days after wound inoculation of conidial suspension of the fungus. The fungus reisolated from the bulbs was identified as Botrytis allii Munn based on the morphological and cultural characteristics and pathogenicity. This is first report of a gray mold neck rot of onion in Korea.
