The semi-active suspension system is getting widely adopted in passenger vehicles for its ability to improve ride comfort over the passive suspension system while not degrading driving safety. A key to the success is to develop practical controllers that yield performance enhancement over the passive damper under various driving conditions. To this end, several control strategies have been studied and evaluated in this research in consideration of practical aspects such as nonlinearity and dynamics of the damper. From simulation results. it has been observed that, with the proposed control schemes, ride comfort can be significantly upgraded while suppressing degradation of driving safety.
The alternative solution for flutter and buffeting stability of a long suspension bridge will be a passive control using flaps. This method not only enables a lightweight economic stiffening girder without an additional stiffness for aerodynamic stability but also avoid the problems from the malfunctions of control systems and energy supply system of an active control by winglets and flaps. A mechanically control using flaps for increasing flutter speed and decreasing buffeting response of a suspension bridge is experimentally studied through a two dimensional bridge deck model. The result shows that the flutter speed is increased and the buffeting response is decreased through the mechanical drive of the flaps.

In this paper the application of the Interpolation Damage Detection Method to the numerical model of a suspension bridge instrumented with a network of Micro-Electro-Mechanical System sensors is presented. The method, which, in its present formulation, belongs to Level II damage identification method, can identify the presence and the location of damage from responses recorded on the structure before and after a seismic damaging event. The application of the method does not require knowledge of the modal properties of the structure nor a numerical model of it. Emphasis is placed herein on the influence of recorded signals noise on the reliability of the results given by the Interpolation Damage Detection Method. The response of a suspension bridge to seismic excitation is computed from a numerical model and artificially corrupted with random noise characteristic of two families of Micro-Electro-Mechanical System accelerometers. The reliability of the results is checked for different damage scenarios.
In this paper, a study on the analysis and design of an electro-hydraulic pressure reducing valve for active suspension system of car is fulfilled. Also, the structurally improved direct-acting electro-hydraulic pressure reducing valve is proposed to satisfy the performance that active suspension system requires. To prove the possibility whether the proposed valve can be used for active suspension system or not, the mathematical modeling and analysis for this valve is fulfilled and the experiment of response to controlled pressure is achieved. Here we conformed the response speed to controlled pressure of the structurally improved valve changed for the better by modifying the shape of spool such as the structure which make use of the power of controlled pressure derived from the area difference between two section areas of valve spool.
In this paper, an efficient numerical algorithm for the kinematic analysis of the standard MacPherson suspension system is presented. The kinematic analysis of the suspension mechanism is carried out in terms of the rectangular Cartesian coordinates of some defined points in the links and at the kinematic joints. Geometric constraints that fix the distances between the points belonging to the same rigid link are introduced. The nonlinear constraint equations are solved by iterative numerical methods. The corresponding linear equations of the velocity and acceleration are solved to yield the velocities and accelerations of the unknown points. The velocities and accelerations of other points of interest as well as the angular velocity and acceleration of any link in the mechanism can be calculated.
Chopper and sensors failures resulting from electric shock and mechanical vibration generated by rail irregularities are the serious problem deteriorating the performance in the electromagnetic suspension systems. Thus, this paper proposes a fault-tolerant control scheme with a dynamic compensator for the failure of the choppers, gap sensors and acceleration sensors in electromagnetic suspension system. The advantage of the proposed control method are demonstrated through simulation and experimental results for the levitation characteristics when the failures of the chopper and sensors occur, respectively.
In this paper, an integrated control of the semi-active suspension system using a reduced full-car model is investigated. By including the reduced full-car dynamics in the control law, the semi-act ive suspension system is able to control not only the vertical acceleration but also the roll and pitch mot ions of the car body, which is not Possible with a quarter-car model or a half-car model. The damping forces for the semi-active dampers are designed to track the damping forces of the skyhook controller designed from the reduced full car dynamics. Computer simulations and experimental results using a real car are also included.
In recent years, there has been an increasing intest in control of active automotive suspension systems with a goal of improving the ride comfort and safety. Many approaches for these purposes have used linearized models of the suspension's dynamics, allowing the use of linear control theory. However, the linearized model does not well descriibe the actual system behavior which is inherently nonlinear. The object of this study is to develop a neuro controlled active suspension for the ride quality improvement. After obtaining active control law using optimal control theory, we use the artificial neural network to train the neuro controller to learn the relation of road input and control force. Form the numerical results, we found that back propagation learning does show good pattern matching and vertical acceleration of the driver's seat and sprung mass.
The tilting train express (TTX) is able to tilt its body toward to the center of the turning radius on curved railways. TTX can travel at higher speed than the existing normal railway vehicles due to the tilting mechanism decreasing centrifugal force. Also, a new suspension system is required for TTX which has proper stiffness constants and damping ratios because it has different suspension characteristics with the others. Therefore, the suspension systems need to be optimized to maximize dynamic characteristic of the railway vehicle. To optimize the dynamic characteristics of TTX, sensitivity analysis should be onde to identify design variables. In this paper, Design of Experiments(DOE) is used for the sensitivity analysis of TTX.
High-pressure abrasive entrained jet have rapidly become important machining technology over the last two decades. However, suspension jet by high-pressure has been recently developed for packaging sawing. Ideally, diamond materials should be used for components in abrasive water-jet systems that are subject to high erosive conditions. Using the diamond orifices improve maintenance and extend wear part life. This paper gives insights to using an abrasive suspension jet with diamond orifice. The influences of orifice material and orifice design are evaluated.
