  • Active suspension controls stiffness and damping between unsprung mass and sprung mass in order to increase the ride quality. However, to increase the riding quality, the handling quality should be decreased and the rattle space should be increased. So, active suspension should cope with these conflict conditions. Therefore its actuating devices have to produce sufficient actuating force and have sufficiently short response time. In this paper, the dynamic characteristics of 1/4 car model with an active suspension is studied according to hydraulic design variables. The active suspension consists of a hydraulic servo valve and a hydraulic cylinder. It shows better performance when it has more powerful and faster actuator.

  • This paper presents the performance of a full vehicle MR suspension system at different tire pressure. The pressure of tire is related to tire stiffness, which is significantly affects the performance of suspension system. Therefore, in this research, the effectiveness of tire pressure on full vehicle MR suspension is evaluated. As a first step, the characteristic of tire with respect to pressure is experimentally tested and modeled. After that, the governing equation of MR damper and full vehicle MR suspension system are derived. The skyhook controller is implemented and the vibration control performance of full vehicle MR suspension is evaluated via simulation with respect to the tire pressure.

  • Using computer in design is a trend in recent years. A good suspension model is depend on the carefully prepared data like joint connection points or spring stiffness, etc. Once a good computer model is obtained, a parametric study for spciffic suspension design factor, like a toe angle, can be done to obtain sensitivity information. Using this information, several important design parameters for a specific design factor can be identified. Once a design of experiments is done using computer models, the results can be used to approximate a function which can best represent the experimentation. An optimum solution of this function can be used to find an optimum design of a suspension system for a specific suspension design factor. Same method is again applied to other design factors iteratively until a good suspension system design is obtained.

  • The dynamic characteristics of two types of mathematical models for a rigid body suspension system are analyzed and compared in this paper. One is a linearized model which is commonly used in the engine mount system analysis, the other is a nonlinear model which usually applied to the pendulum type system. The typical 3 d.o.f's mathematical model, for convenience, is chosen as a simulation model, because it has fundamental dynamic characteristics of suspension system. Time responses and unbalance responses of the rigid body, transmitted forces and torques are simulated by using the mathematical model. From the results of computer simulation, it is approved that he nonlinear model is valid and the linearized model gives erroneous results in the case of the pendulum type suspension system. In addition, in this study the effects of design change on the dynamic characteristics of the suspension system are investigated. Mount locations, mount angles, lengths, stiffness and damping coefficients of suspension bars are chosen as design parameters.

  • light rail vehicle is modeled as a 2 d. o. f linear system for the design of vertical suspension characteristics and a 4 d. o. f. linear system for the design of lateral suspension characteristics. FRA's class-5-track irregularity is used for the exciting disturbance on track. Suspension stiffness and damping is selected on the basis of the ride quality and suspension stroke trade-off for the bogie of light rail vehicle. The optimum value of primary and secondary suspension characteristics is determined. And the stability of full vehicle model for the LRV is analyzed using the VAMPIRE program and critical speed is determined.

  • A leaf spring suspension has been widely used since it can carry big load and simplicity. But one major drawback is the poor ride performance because of the friction in the system and the high stiffness coefficient. To overcome these, air spring suspension can be used. The air spring suspension system can improve the ride of the heavy vehicle significantly and also it can adjust the height to the loading and unloading. A truck with the leaf suspension system is modified with the air suspension system and the performance of the vehicle is compared using the suggested method. The existing leaf suspension can be replaced with the air suspension system to improve the performance.

  • This paper develops a finite element model of a cabover type large truck. The finite element model is for evaluating torsional stiffness of the frame of the large truck. The torsional test of the frame is conducted in order to validate the developed finite element model. A load cell is used to measure the load applied to the frame. An angle sensor is used to measure the torsional angle. An actuator is used to apply a load to the frame. A vertical upward load and a vertical downward load are applied to the frame in the torsional test. The frame's torsional stiffness is computed with the measured load and torsional angle in the torsional test. The finite element model of the large truck includes cab, deck and payload, suspension, and tire. Cab, deck, and suspension are modeled not to affect the frame's torsional stiffness. The simulation is performed with the developed finite element model for evaluating the frame's torsional stiffness. The simulation results show a very good correlation with the torsional test results in the tendency of changing of the frame's torsional stiffness not only with the direction of the applying load but also with the amount of the applying load. In addition, the simulation results predict the measured torsional stiffness of the frame with about $5{\%}$ error.

The air spring suspension system can improve the ride of the heavy vehicle significantly and also it can adjust the height to the loading and unloading. • Wire ropes are widely used in cable car, suspension bridge and elevator, etc. and there has been a growing need for ropes of large diameter. The theoretical procedures to obtain the stiffness coefficients of wire ropes, using previously reported theory, are programmed and the verification of the program is made. The effects of lay angle on the stiffness of strand are researched and comparisons on stiffness of rope are made according to the lay type. Axial stiffness optimization problems with coupling and torsional stiffness constraints are formulated and the effects of constraints on other stiffness coefficients on axial stiffness optimization are investigated.

  • The main obstacle to high track density in HDD is the structural resonances of the suspension. The most critical mode is sway mode and second torsion mode, when a data is read and written. It is common fact that the effect of two modes is smaller when a thickness is bulky. But the stiffness of suspension is smaller, the slider can follow a disk better. Because these two fact are reciprocal, a compromise is needed. So we investigated another method to improve band width without changing of the thickness of suspension but with changing of the shape. In this paper, we use two method - Sensitivity analysis and SIP using ADS. And we obtained the optimized value close to target value.
