The Anyang River runs through highly industrialized area and joins the lower part of the Han River. loading out large amounts of potential pollutants. Attempts were made to understand geochemical behavior of trace elements in the stream sedimens collected from the bottom of the river and the stream water. Bottom sediments, suspended solids and stream waters were collected and analysed for the chemical and mineralogical composition. Heavy metals including Cr, Zn, Ni, and Co in the sediments were enriched appeared to reflect anthropogenic input. Pb, Cu, As were also enriched between several to 10 times , compared to background levels. Although some heavy metals were derived from anthropogeic input, geochemical associations seem to implyh much of the elements are originated from natural sources as well, mainly from granitic rocks . This is also supported by the mineralogical composition of the suspended solids, which are mainly composed of quartz, feldspar and mica. Most of the elements are associated with total carbon and clay sized fractions, with high values of correlation coefficient. Most of the elements are associated with total carbon and clay sized fractions , with high values of correlation coefficient. It was noteworthy that Hg was detected between 2 and 4 ppb in the stream water.
The study investigates the problems of silt protector used for mitigation measure of suspended sediments (SS) during coastal construction and provides their improvements based on the field investigation and analysis of the environmental impact assessment reports for the coastal development projects of Korea. The field investigation along west, east and south coasts of Korea reveals a variety of problems in the installation and management of silt protector solely used for the SS mitigation in Korea. Major problems include installation itself, low cost and quality of silt protector, and maintenance. These problems superimpose the effectiveness of silt protector in mitigating coastal environment impact. The present study provides the specific guideline on the project type needed for the installation of silt protector, installation standard and planning, maintenance and management. The study also suggests new mitigation options such as environmental window to limit the construction period and environmental dredger to compensate for the deficits of silt protector.
A bio-optic survey was made in the Yellow Sea in May, 1998 for OSMI cal/val and application project. Optical measurements were made in nine stations. From these measurements, apparent and inherent optical properties such as $K_d$, R, a, and $b_b$ were estimated. The patterns of reflectance indicated that all three major constituents, namely, chlorophyll-a, suspended sediments, and CDOM were active in determining the optical properties in the Yellow Sea. Their relative contribution was different among the stations. All the stations had high backscattering and their values fell in Case 2 category. Although the total absorption was very high, it could not be explained by the level of CDOM concentration. It is suggested that the suspended sediment might be highly absorptive and further study is needed to investigate the optical properties of the suspended sediments.
Two hundred suspended-matter samples were collected from the continental shelf off the southeast coast of Korea during September, 1981, March, 1982 and April 1983. Superficial bottom sediments on the shelf were also taken. Based on the alalyses of TSM distribution and concentration patterns, it is considered that finegrained suspended matters are restricted to nearshore-inner shelf showing a band or zone paralleling with coastal morphology. This fact suggests a limitation of "modern" fine grained sediments to a nearshore and inner shelf band. The sand deposits with the lower value of mud content (<5%) adjacent to the shelf break and on the outer shelf would probably be "relict" sediments (old beach sediments) deposited in response to a lower stand of sea level during the Pleistocene ice age. The transgression did little to alter the distribution of sand on the outer shelf in this particular study area. The progress of shore line was so rapid that a given locality was in the beach zone and subject to rapid longshore drift and extensive reworking only for a few years. Probably the most pronounced effect of the transgression was sorting of the sand, and at least partial winnowing out of the finer fractions.
Surface sediments and seawater were sampled at Masan and Haengam Bays of Korea, to evaluate contamination by sewage-derived organic matter using fecal sterols, Six stream-water samples into Masan and Haengam Bays were also sampled. Total concentrations of eight sterols (coprostanol, epichloestanol, epicoprostanol, cholesterol, cholestanol, brassicasterol, stigmasterol and $\beta-sitosterol$) were in the range of $1,274\~4,768{\mu}g/g$ dry weight in suspended particulate from the stream-water, $292\~2,244{\mu}g/g$ dry weight in suspended particulate from the seawater and $4.5\~27.2{\mu}g/g$ dry weight in the sediments. Although sterol compositions in sediments, seawater and stream-water were different, cholesterol was the predominant sterol in all samples. The proportion and concentration of coprostanol, a sewage tracer, in stream-water was much higher than those in sediment and seawater. The sterol levels including coprostanol in the sediments and seawater were higher at inner basin than at the outer bay. Some molecular indices and multivariate statistical analysis were used to assess the origin of these sterols and sewage contamination in the study area. The sterol composition patterns in stream-water were mainly associated with contamination by sewage-derived organic matters and those of seawater were associated with the activities of marine-originated organisms. Sterol levels in the sediments were both from the sewage input through stream-water and the marine- originated organisms. This survey suggests that the main source/route of sewage-derived organic matters in Masan Bay is the input of stream-water into the bay.
Remotely sensed data is regarded as a potentially effective data source for the measurement of water quality and for the environmental change of water bodies. In this study, we measured the spectral reflectance by using multi-spectral image of low resolution camera(LRC) which will be loaded in the OSMI multi-purpose satellite(KOMPSAT) scheduled to be launched on 1999 to use the data in analyzing water pollution. We also investigated the possibility of extraction of water quality factors in water bodies by using remotely sensed low resolution data such as NOAA/AVHRR. In this study, Shiwha-District and Sang-Sam Lake was set up as the subject areas for the study. In this part of the study, we measured the spectral reflectance of the water surface to analyze the radiance of the water bodies in low resolution spectral band and tried to analyze the water quality factors in water bodies by using radiance feature from another remotely sensed data such as NOAA/AVHRR. As the method of this study, first, we measured the spectral reflectance of the water surface by using SFOV( Single Field of View) to measure the reflectance of water quality analysis from every channel in LRC spectral band(0.4~O.9${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$). Second, we investigated the usefulness of ground truth data and the LRC data by measuring every spectral reflectance of water quality factors. Third, we analyzed water quality factors by using the radiance feature from another remotely sensed data such as NOAA/AVHRR. We carried out ratio process of what we selected Chlorophyll-a and suspended sediments as the first factors of the water quality. The results of the analysis are below. First, the amount of pollutants of Shiwha-Lake has been increasing every you since 1987 by factors of eutrophication. Second, as a result of the reflectance, Chlorophyll-a represented high spectral reflectance mainly around 0.52${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ of green spectral band, and turbidity represented high spectral reflectance at 0.57${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$. But suspended sediments absorbed high at 0.8${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$. Third, Chlorophyll-a and suspended sediments could have a distribution chart as a result of the water quality analysis by using NOAA/AVHRR data.
Cohesie sediment movement in estuarine systems is strongly affected by the phenomena of aggregation and flocculation. Aggregation is the process where primary particles are clustered together in tightly-packed formations; flocculation is the process where aggregates and single particles are bonded together to form large particle groups of very low specific density. The size, shape and strength of the flocculants control the rate of deposition and the processes of pollutant exchange between suspended sediments and ambient water. In estuarine waters, suspended sediments above the lutocline form the mobile suspension zone while below the lutocline they form the stationary suspension zone. Suspended particles in the mobile zone are generally in a dispersed state and the controlling forces are the Brownian motion and the turbulent flow fluctuations. In the stationary suspension zone, the driving force is the gravity. This paper discusses the settling and particle flocculation characteristics under quiescient flow conditions. Particles are entering the study domain randomly. Particles in the mobile suspension zone are simulated by using the Smoluchowski's model. Flocs created in the mobil suspension zone are moving into the stationary suspension zone where viscosity and drag effects are important. Utilizing the concepts of the maximum Feret's diameter and the Minkowski's sausage logic, the fractal dimension of the flocs within the stationary suspension is estimated and then compared with results obtained by other studies.
Several field surveys were conducted to investigate changes of water quality with time in a tidal river. Results indicated that nitrification process were dependent on the change of salinity and suspended solids concenttration. Therefore laboratory batch experiments were conducted, using suspended solids and sediment taken from a tidal river, to study the effect of salinity on nitrification and to estimate kinetic parameters of it in the tidal river. suspended solids and sediment were sampled at a point in the middle stream. Sediments were collect from the aerobic layer of mud. The change of nitrogen concentration with time was clearly explained with Monod groth model and kinetic parameters were obtained by curve fitting method. Changes in NH4-N, NO2-N, and NO3-N concentrations in the river ROKKAU with time were simulated well using Lagrangian reference frame and parameter values obtained in the laboratory tests. T도 mechanism of nitrification by suspended solids and sediment in a tidal river is shown to depend on tidal effects.
Coastal water including estuaries has distinctive environmental characteristics where sediments are transported and deposited by flowing river water, providing an environment in which fluid mud layers can be formed. Acoustic method is mostly used to detect or monitor the fluid mud layer. However, since sound propagating in this layer suffers severe attenuation, it is important to estimate the accurate attenuation coefficient for various concentrations of fluid mud layer for the successful use of the acoustic method. In this paper, measurement results of attenuation coefficient for 3.5, 5, and 7.5 MHz ultrasounds were presented. The measurements were made in a small-size water tank in which suspended sediment samples with various sediment concentrations were formed using kaolinite powder. The results were compared to the model predictions obtained by attenuation coefficient model in which the mean grain size (called as Mass-median-diameter, D50) was used as input parameter. There were reasonable agreements between measured attenuation coefficients and model outputs predicted using the particle range of D50 ${\pm}20%$. The comparison results imply that although the suspended sediments consist of various-sized particles, sound attenuation might be greatly influenced by amount of particle with a size which has a larger attenuation than that of any particle in the suspended sediments for the frequency used.
Some selected hydraulic characteristics including the average velocitv, geometry of the channel cross-section, and water temperature, and sediment-characteristics including suspended sediment concentration , and the size distributions of suspended and bed-sediments were collected at two measuring stations in the Cheongmi-Stream during a flood period. The river bed investigated for this study is composed completely of sands, and it can be considered a typical alluvial channel. The major results obtained from the analysis of the date collected are as follows: 1) Only during floods, a substantial sediment transport occurs in the river; 2) The stage-discharge relations are changed frequently, especially for low flows; 3) The friction in the flow increases with an increase in the flow discharge; 4) Slits and clays are dominant in suspended sediments during normal flows, while sands are dominant during floods; 5) The vertical distributions of the flow velocity and suspended sediment concentration can be described, respectively, by Prandt1-von Karman's log-law and Rouse's exponential law. It is judged that the above results are commonly adapted for other alluvial rivers, although they were obtained from a limited number of data collected from a specific river reach.
