  • It is important to assess and improve the warship survivability for the weapon threats which have a critical effect on warship. The survivability of the warship is defined as the capability of a warship to avoid or withstand a man-made hostile environment. The survivability of the warship consists of three categories (Susceptibility, Vulnerability and Recoverability). Firstly, the susceptibility is defined as the inability of a warship to avoid radars, guns, missiles and etc. Secondly, the vulnerability is defined as the inability of a warship to withstand the man-made hostile environment. Finally, the recoverability is defined as the ability of a warship to recover the damaged components and systems. Among them, this paper has described the vulnerability assessment for the hypothetical system which is composed of critical components. Also, the procedure which is suggested to calculate the vulnerable probability of the damaged warship is based on the Vulnerable Area Method.

  • We study an degree of alternativeness and a survivability of alternate routing algorithm in mobile ad-hoc tactical communication networks. The common channel signaling scheme is used and flood search routing algorithm is used for analysis. We also study a connectivity performance for flood search routing, restricted flooding and hybrid routing. From the results we expect low blocking probabilities with alternate routing and the conventional flood search routing shows better connectivity performance which results in high survivability.

  • Aircraft combat survivability(ACS) can be defined here as the probability of an aircraft to accomplish a given mission and not to be killed by enemy threats. The purpose of this thesis is to obtain analytically the combat survivability of the military aircraft according to the enemy and operation environment. Five factors under which a mission is being carried out are considered in this study. These factors are types and performance of enemy threats, aircraft susceptibility, aircraft vulnerability, ECM(electronic counter measures) capability, and pilot's capability. The model constructed in this study would be a useful tool to analyze ACS based on analytical method. It is also able to provide a better input data for wargaming simulation and present a criterion on determining optimal sorties for aircraft's air-to-ground mission.

  • Hydrodynamic ram phenomenon could be generated by external threats such as impact and blast in the aircraft. High strain rate deformation caused by the hydrodynamic ram phenomenon is one of the main factors to influence structural survivability. Mechanical properties of composite structure change rapidly under conditions of high strain rate. Therefore, it is necessary to experimentally investigate the influence of strain rates for aircraft structural survivability. In this paper, tensile tests of composite material were conducted for low and high strain rates to investigate the influence of the various strain rates. Tensile modulus increases more compared to tensile strength at high strain rate under hydrodynamic ram condition. Regression analysis was conducted to predict tensile modulus at various strain rates because it is one of the main damaging factors for composite structures under high strain rate conditions. Also, the mechanical properties of composite materials were acquired and analyzed under high strain rate conditions. It is hypothesized that the results from this study would be used for designing aircraft composite structures and evaluation considering structural survivability.

  • One of the considerations in weapon systems procurement is the objective of maximizing the current force. Also, offensive effects, rather than defense are valued in weapons system development and procurement. Especially, the survivability of a naval ship is equally important as the offensive effect of onboard weapons. In case of naval ships, development of attack tactics and research regarding damage minimization must be conducted through live fire exercise against actual targets in order to minimize damage from the enemy. However, it is difficult to conduct such adequate measures due to realistic limitations such as time and budget in order to verify and calculate a weapon system's attack and damage effects along with the lack of practical studies in this subject despite numerous interests. Research are being conducted utilizing M&S to estimate attack effects and study damages due to such reason, but the lack of authoritative data and development ability are limiting calculation of reliable results. Therefore, this study will propose a measure to increase survivability of a weapon system(ship/vessel) utilizing research of vulnerability from enemy attacks analysis method against a naval ship(Craft Air Cushion).

  • To evaluate equipment survivability of the polymer Viton, used in sealing materials, the effects of its thermal degradation were investigated in severe accident (SA) environment in a nuclear power plant. Viton specimens were prepared and thermally degraded at different SA temperature profiles. Changes in mechanical properties at different temperature profiles in different SA states were investigated. The thermal lag analysis was performed at calculated convective heat transfer conditions to predict the exposure temperature of the polymer inside the safety-related equipment. The polymer that was thermally degraded at postaccident states exhibited the highest change in its mechanical properties, such as tensile strength and elongation.

  • The primary objective of this paper is to investigate the dynamic stability and survivability of a four-column classic TLP (tension-leg platform) under less-than-extreme storm conditions where one or more tendons have been lost due to damage or disconnect. The transient responses of the platform and tendon tensions at the moment of disconnection are particularly underscored. The numerical simulation is based on the BE-FE hybrid hull-tendon-riser coupled dynamic analysis in time domain. Compared to the common industry practice of checking the system without a failed tendon in the beginning, the maximum tension on the neighboring tendon can be significantly increased at the moment of disconnection due to the snap-like transient effects, which can lead to unexpected failure of the total system. It is also found that the transient effects can be reduced with the presence of TTRs (top-tensioned risers) with pneumatic tensioners. It is also seen that the TLP cannot survive in the 100-yr hurricane condition after losing one tendon.

  • There have been large concerns about survivability defined as the capability of a system to perform a mission-critical role, in a timely manner, in the presence of attacks, failures. In particular, One of the most important core technologies required for the design of the ITS(Intrusion Tolerance System) that performs continuously minimal essential services even when the computer system is partially compromised because of intrusions is the survivability one of In included the dependability analysis of a reliability and availability etc. quantitative dependability analysis of the In. In this Paper, we applied self-healing mechanism utilizing two factors of self-healing mechanism (fault model and system response), the core technology of autonomic computing to secure the protection power of the ITS and consisted of a state transition diagram of the ITS composed of a primary server and a backup server. We also defined the survivability, availability, and downtime cost of the ITS, and then performed studies on simulation experiments and two cases of vulnerability attack. Simulation results show that intrusion tolerance capability at the initial state is more important than coping capability at the attack state in terms of the dependability enhancement.
