  • Objectives : This study was aimed to facilitate mutual comprehension between Western and Traditional Korean Medicine (TKM) by analyzing recognition of medical school students on traditional medical prescription and treatment such as herbal medicines and acupuncture. Methods : We conducted a survey targeting medical school students of four medical schools from April through May 2009, and analyzed 208 cases responded. Results : Survey results revealed that medical school students took knowledge of traditional medicine from TV programs and on the Web in general. They thought they had considerable traditional medical knowledge but did not almost understand for professional contents. Regardless of some positive recognition for traditional herbal medicine, negative perspectives were more common and its safety and efficacy on the drug reference were considered as a major reason. On the other hand, recognition on acupuncture was comparatively positive. Scientific data for both herbal medicine and acupuncture are lacking in reality but the attitude only for acupuncture was different. Of the survey respondents, 57.8% had negative attitude against diagnostic methods of TKM and 59.1% opposed to the usage of modern medical equipments by TKM doctors. With regard to the future position of TKM, they tacitly approved that TKM would be absorbed into the complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) and importance of TKM objectification, followed by Government's support. Conclusions : Medical school students neither affirm nor deny TKM as a whole but the state of awareness for each item was similar to the physician. In terms of TKM its internal and external innovation would be required to continuously establish objectification of TKM prescription and scientific research on treatment technology.

  • Objectives: The aim of the research was to evaluate the recognition levels on PHR (Personal Health Record) which was regarded as a valuable tool in health areas. Old and young age groups (mostly university students) were two groups that were under investigation. The young age group was deliberately asked to pretend they were members in the old age group (adult group here after) in order to investigate the recognition level differences in such conditions. Methods: We performed common and grouping analyses based on two hypotheses. Firstly the survey results should be different in both age groups. Secondly people who had high risk factors of a disease (obesity in our study) should show higher recognition level on PHR based on an assumption that they were aware of serious outcome of the disease more than the others. Results & Conclusion: The first hypothesis was rejected as both groups show similar patterns in responding the survey. The second hypothesis was also rejected because both groups showed responses in similar patterns. Based on the outcome of our study and analyses, we concluded that there would be no differences in recognition levels on PHR between young and adult groups. Also, possession of disease risk factors, at least for obesity, would not affect the recognition level of PHR. Further elaborate researches with larger groups on the topic may be necessary in order to validate the method and to expand for various applications.

The recognition levels of the culinary practice education according to the types of sex, grade and alma mater are as follows. The interest and necessity of the culinary practice education was very high while the performance degree of the culinary practice education was felt insufficient. For the efficient culinary practice education, they recognized that theoretical education and practice demonstrations are required and hoped to focus on hotel cooking and certified technician cooking. In addition, they hoped to be provided with a place for teacher's detailed practice demonstrations and supplementary practice. According to the variables, positive responses were given from male students, high grade students and vocational school students. In conclusion, if chances are given to display achievement desire self-directly through increasing practical training, development and application of various programs, operation of open practice classes and culinary organization reflecting social changes in the education courses, the culinary practice education is considered to be more vitalized.
