  • ZnO varistors have been widely used to protect power system and electronic system against overvoltages based on their excellent nonlinearity. In order to increase their protection capability, ZnO varistors are chosen by several electrical parameters according to their applications, namely 1mA DC voltage, 1eakage currents, impulse residual voltages, withstanding capability to impulse surge, and energy absorption capability. But these Parameters have scattering properties due to the nonuniformity of electrical characteristics. In this study, the effect of the microstructrual nonuniformity on the surge absorption capability of ZnO varistors.

  • The protection performance and energy absorption capability are important for both MOAs for distribution lines and MOAs for high voltage systems, therefore the manufacturing technique of ZnO varistor elements with high ability against surge impacts is great important for high voltage systems. But until now ZnO varistors for low voltage class have been developed in Korea, ZnO varistors with the rate discharge current of 5, 10kA class for high voltage systems depend on an import from advanced countries, such as Japan or U.S.A, which have developed its in the late 1980s. So in the aspect of taking independent technique the development of ZnO varistors with the rate discharge current of 5, 10kA class for high voltage systems is important. In this research project ZnO varistor elements with diameters of 35mm and 70mm for the rate discharge current of 5, 10kA class for high voltage systems are manufactured, then various chemical composition and processing variables affected the electrical and the physical characteristics of these ZnO varistors are investigated.

  • ZnO varistors have been widely used to protect power system and electronic system against overvoltages based on their excellent nonlinearity. In order to increase their protection capability, the fracture and protection technologies of arresters have to study according to their applications, namely ImA DC voltage, leakage currents, impulse residual voltages, withstanding capability to impulse surge, and energy absorption capability. ZnO varistors which have nonlinear current-voltage characteristic name a number of failure mechanism when ZnO elements absorb surge energies. Failure mode by thermal stress and Pin hole are among the most common failure mechanism at the high current surge current. In this study, the fracture mechaism of power arresters are introduced and protection technologies are researched. In particular the effect of thermal stress by surge currents to ZnO elements and methods against arc surge energy through withstand structure design of arrester are discussed.

Influence of $TiO_2$ Addition on Microstructure of ZnO Ceramic Varistor (ZnO 세라믹 바리스터의 미세구조에 미치는 $TiO_2$의 영향)

  • ZnO varistors are characterized by the features of excellent nonlinearity and surge withstand capability. In this paper, in order to investigate the use of ZnO varistor as surge absorption device in low voltage, metal oxide material($TiO_2$) was selected as control material of grain growth. Samples of ZnO varistors were fabricated with varying the contents, and then the microstructures and V-I characteristics were measured. It was observed by SEM that the mean grain size increased with the increase of the additive. From the measurement of V-I characteristics, it was observed that according to the increase of the quantity of $TiO_2$ as additive, the operating voltage was lowered.

  • The main functions of AC railroad vehicles arresters is to protect the main transformer from lightening impulse or switching impulse surge, then the MOV(metal oxide varistor) elements rated of 10kA is applied. The residual voltage and surge energy absorption are important parameters in designing arrester, these must be carefully decided with considering protecting level of impulse environment of system. The purpose of this study is to discuss the residual voltages and the energy absorption capability by impulse currents on MOV elements for railroad vehicles, and to introduce design factors which act as optimal protecting condition against impulse currents.

  • ZnO varistors have an excellent non-linearity and a large surge-energy absorption capability. For these reasons, the ZnO varistors are widely used to protect electrical/electronic circuits from an abnormal surge and/or noise signal. In order to obtain the low-voltage varistor with randomly distributed large seed grain within bulk, the ZnO varistors are made by a new three-composition seed grain method. And a conduction mechanism of varistors, which was observed in the temperature range of 30 ∼ 120$^{\circ}C$ and at the current range of 10$\^$-8/∼10$^2$ A/cm$^2$, was classified by the three regions of different mechanism when the current was increased.

  • The conventional SiC-type of lightning arresters in distribution systems has been replaced by ZnO-type because the ZnO-type has characteristics such as outstanding non linearity, high energy absorption capability, surge suppressing performance, and excellent response to abrupt wave. Out of the various types of lightning arrester failures, some which have been often reported could be prevented in advance. Therefore, the preventive countermeasures which can cope with the failures are strongly required. This paper summed up and analyzed the lightning arrester failures which occurred, from 1983 to 1992, in distribution systems in order to provide fundamental data, classified by year, to make countermeasures.
