An important issue in the oxidation of pentachlorophenol (PCP) by the enzyme horseradish peroxidase (HRP) is enzyme inactivation during the reaction. This study was initiated to investigate the ability of two nonionic surfactants (Tween 20 and Tween 80) to mitigate HRP inactivation. The surfactants were tested at concentrations below and above their critical micelle concentrations (CMCs). Enhancement of PCP oxidation was observed at sub-CMCs, indicating effective protection of HRP by the two surfactants. Maximum levels of PCP removal were observed when the concentrations of Tween 20 and Tween 80 were 40 and 50% of the CMCs, respectively At supra-CMCs, both surfactants caused a noticeable reduction in the extent of PCP removal.
This study is to investigate the effect of torrefaction on enzymatic hydrolysis of lignocellulosic biomass for bio-ethanol production. As a pretreatment, the torrefaction of lignocellulosic biomass was conducted in temperature of $250{\sim}350^{\circ}C$ in the absence of oxygen. Tween-80, nonionic surfactant, was tested to enhance saccharification efficiency by coping with hydrophobicity resulted from torrefaction. As a result, the glucose production from enzymatic hydrolysis of biomass pretreated by torrefaction was greater than that obtained from the non-pretreated biomass. Sugar conversion was higher when the biomass was saccharified with addition of tween-80. It was found that torrefaction can be applied as a preptreatment for lignocellulosic biomass and tween-80 is needed to enhance its enzyme saccharification.
The effects of non-ionic surfactants (Triton X-100 and Tween 80) on cloned glucoamylase production and secretion in recombinant Saccharomyces cerevisiae culture were studied. Even though the extracellular glucoamylase activity was increased by addition of Tween 80 due to the increase of the cell mass, Tween 80 did not play a role in the increase of glucoamylase secretion. On the addition of Triton X-100 addition, the secretion efficiency was increased while the cell growth was inhibited. Triton X-100 was added to the culture broth after 24 hr of culture to minimize the inhibition of the cell growth, and consequently the glucoamylase activity in the culture broth was increased by 12%.
The effects of nonionic surfactant solutions of 0.1g/dL on detergency and liquid wetting/retention properties of soiled polyester/cotton(65/35) cloth were studied. Soiled polyester/cotton(65/35) cloth (EMPA 104) and 10 different nonionic surfactants (Span 20, Tween 20, 40, 60, 80, 21, 61, 81, 65, 85) were used in the study. The water retention and liquid retention capacity values of soiled cloth were decreased compared with those of unsoiled cloth. The wetting and water retention of soiled cloth improved with addition of surfactants, whereas water retention ratio(W/H) values didnot change markedly. Generally surfactants with low surface tension and high HLB (Hydrophile-lipophile balance) were more effective in improving the wetting/retention properties of soiled cloth. Nonionic surfactants having high ethylene oxide contents of 20 moles; i.e., Tween 20, 40, 60 & 80, showed better detergency than low ethylene oxide contents of 4 moles; i.e., Tween 21, 61 & 81. As HLB values of surfactants and $cos{\theta}$ of the soiled cloth increase, the detergency values of soiled cloth increased.

The stability of CGAs(colloidal gas aphrons) prepared from non-ionic and ionic surfactants was investigated. Those surfactants were sodium dodecyl sulfate(SDS), Triton X-100, Tween 80 and Quillaja Saponin. The stability of CGAs prepared from single surfactants or mixed surfactants(two components) using a CGA generate. was investigated as functions of temperature, surfactant concentration and stirring time. Saponin among the single surfactants has shown the longest duration time(143 min) and then, Triton X-100, SDS, and Tween 80 were followed by at room temperature. In case of CGAs heated up to $70^{\circ}C$, SDS endured for 116 min but Saponin lasted for only 105 mit which was a considerable reduction of the duration time of CGAs at room temperature. For mixed surfactant pairs, stability of any one pairs stood between the two. That meant no synergic effect for surfactant blending. At the higher temperature, Saponin+Triton X-100 was disclosed to be the lowest, 53 min meanwhile Saponin+SDS was the highest at ambient temperature. The CGAs, initially about 140 ${\mu}m$ in diameter, began to grow right after the agitation to be about 190 ${\mu}m$ owing to coalescence of the bubbles and then became to collapse. When heated, CGAs including Saponin tended to be smaller while the others to be larger. In summary, we found that the stability of CGAs or the duration time was greater for single surfactants and at room temperature rather than for mixed surfactants that caused substantial intermolecular interactions in the CGA structure and at the higher temperature.
In this study, the influence factors on the stability of the O/W (oil in water) emulsions prepared with coconut oil and the nonionic mixed surfactant (Tween 80-Span 80) were evaluated. The concentration and HLB value of the nonionic mixed surfactant, and the degree of agitation were used as manufacture factors. The stability of prepared O/W emulsions were measured with the mean droplet size, zeta-potential, emulsion stability index (ESI), and thermal instability index (TII). The mean droplet size of the prepared O/W emulsions was from 100 to 200 nm. As the concentration of mixed surfactant and the homogenization speed increased, the droplet sizes decreased, while the zeta-potential values increased. The effect of HLB values increased in the order of 6.0, 10.0 and 8.0, and at the HLB value of 8 the smallest mean droplet size as 120 nm was obtained whereas the largest value of the zeta-potential between 10 and 60 mV. From the results of ESI and TII, the stability of prepared O/W emulsions increased in order of 6.0, 10.0 and 8.0 of HLB values, and ESI and TII values were above 80% and below 20% respectively at HLB value of 8.0.

Treatability of heavy metals in marine sediments contaminated with mainly organic matter was investigated on the basis of washing technology using oxidizers and surfactants. Sediment samples were collected at N area which expected for remediation project of contaminated marine sediment. For additives, hydrogen peroxide ($H_2O_2$) and Tween-80 were used at oxidizer and nonionic surfactant, respectively. In experiments, sediments was mixed with sea water at the ratio of 1 : 3 than $H_2O_2$ (1 M, 3 M, 4 M, 5 M) and Tween-80 (0.05%) were added. Samples were gathered at following reaction time (10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80 min and 24 h). Total Organic Carbon (TOC) was 55.2% at the conditions of 5 M $H_2O_2+0.05%$ Tween-80 24 h. Hence total heavy metals were Cu 29.5%, Zn 42.3%, Cd 73.0% and bioavailable heavy metals were Cu 60.0%, Zn 77.7%, Cd 90.2% at the conditions of 5 M $H_2O_2+0.05%$ Tween-80 10 min. The correlations for between bioavailable metals (Cu, Zn, Cd) and TOC were significant (Cu, Zn, Cd; $r^2=0.94$, 0.85, 0.69, respectively).
Cadmium uptake by growing and nongrowing (intact) cells of a chdmium-tolerant yeast Hansenula anomala B-7 in the presence of surfactants was studied. In growing cultures the addition of Triton X-100 or Tween 80 increased cadmium uptake by about 30% with no inhibition of cell growth, and in intact cells Triton X-100 increased cadmium accumulation by about 80% compared to surfactant-free controls. Considering balance between increased uptake and pollution, the addition of 0.1% Triton X-100 was preferable. By the mixed addition with defoamer silicone, during growth of cells Tween 80 or Triton X-100 enhanced uptake efficiency of cadmium compared to its single addition, whereas in intact biomass each of surfactants tested had no significant effect on cadmium uptake. The uptake of cadmium was observed to rise sharply to a maximum and then declined with increasing pH, and maximum accumulation of cadmium by growing and intact cells occurred at the pH of 6.0 and 7.0, respectively. A significant increase in cadmium uptake occurred with shaking culture. Cadmium uptake by growing and intact cells was almost completed during the culture time of 72 or 24 hrs, respectively. Scalded cells sorbed much more cadmium-ion than living cells.
This experiment was conducted to investigate effects of non-ionic or zwitterionic (+/-) surfactants on digestibility of rice straw, and changes of growth of rumen mixed microbes, pH, and gas production during in vitro fermentation. Also, during in vitro ruminal fermentation, microbial attachment on rice straw was investigated using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Tween 80 or SOLFA-850 for non-ionic surfactant (NIS), and 3-(Dodecyldimethylammonio) propanesulfanate (DDAP) for zwitterionic surfactant (ZIS) was supplemented by 0.05% and 0.1% in Dehority's artificial medium containing Holtein rumen fluid, respectively, and the substrate for fermentation was rice straw passed through 1 mm screen. The experiment was composed of 7 treatments (two levels of two NISs, two levels of a ZIS) including the control, and 6, 12, 24, 48 and 72 hr of fermentation time with 3 replications per treatment. Treatment of Tween 80 increased in vitro DM digestibilities during 48 hr and 72 h post fermentations compared to the other treatments, whereas treatment of DDAP as a ZIS resulted in decreased DM digestibility than that of the control from 24 hr post fermentation (P<0.05). Gas production in vitro was greater (P<0.05) with addition of NIS than the control or ZIS, and increased as fermentation time elapsed. Rumen mixed microbial growth was greatest with addition of Tween 80 as NIS, and lowest when DDAP as ZIS was supplemented to the fermentation tube (P<0.05). In SEM observation, rumen microbial population attached on rice straw particle was greater with addition of NIS, but was less with addition ZIS compared with the control. In conclusion we could not found any positive effects of ZIS surfactants on rumunal fermentation characteristics and rumen microbial growth rates.
The purpose of the present study was to formulate the aqueous solution of 1-cyclopent-3-enylmethyl-6(3,5-dimethyl-benzoyl)-5-ethyl-1H-pyrimidine-2,4-dione (CPD), a novel antivirus compound containing pirimidine structure. For this purpose, the effects of various solubilization agents such as cosolvents [ethanol, propylene glycol (PG), polyethylene glycol 300 (PEG 300), polyethylene glycol 400 (PEG 400), glycerin], surfactants (Tween 80, Cremophor$^{(R)}$ RH40, Cremophor$^{(R)}$ EL, Poloxamer 407, Poloxamer 188) and a complexation agent [hydroxypropyl-${\beta}$-cyclodextrin (HPBCD)] , on the solubility of CPD in aqueous solution were evaluated. The solubility of CPD in water was under $1\;{\mu}g/ml$ at $20^{\circ}C$. Cosolvents such as ethanol, PG, PEG 300, PEG 400 and glycerin did not enhance the solubility of CPD at the $0{\sim}40\%$ concentration range. The solubility of CPD was significantly elevated by the addition of cosolvents over the $80\%$ concentration range. On the other hand, tween 80, Cremophor$^{(R)}$ L, Cremophor$^{(R)}$ RH40, and HPBCD showed enhanced effects on the solubility of CPD. The enhanced effects of Poloxamer 407 or Poloxamer 188 on the CPD solubility were less pronounced compared with tween 80, Cremophor$^{(R)}$ L or Cremophor$^{(R)}$ RH40. As a results, tween 80 aqueous solution was selected as an optimum solvent system. The aqueous solutions containing $20\%$ tween 80 were formulated as a dosing solution containing CPD for its intraperitoneal and intrahypodermic administration, respectively, The formular showed physical stability after stored for 7 days at $4^{\circ}C$.
