Korean Multi-Purpose SATellite 5 (KOMPSAT-5) will be the first high resolution X-band SAR satellite of Korea. A critical parameter necessary for interpreting SAR images over the ocean is surface wind field. SAR is the only system that can provide a synoptic view of wind fields over the ocean covering large areas. However, there has been no X-band wind retrieval model. In this study, we evaluate the development of an X-band wind retrieval model and show the possibility of KOMPSAT-5 SAR on wind estimations using a combination of theoretical models.
The statistical indexes such as RMSE (Root Mean Square Error), Mean Bias error, and IOA (Index of agreement) are used to evaluate 3 Dimensional wind and temperature fields predicted by operational meteorological model RAMS (Regional Atmospheric Meteorological System) implemented in CARIS (Chemical Accident Response Information System) for the dispersion forecast of hazardous chemicals in case of the chemical accidents in Korea. The operational atmospheric model, RAMS in CARIS are designed to use GDAPS, GTS, and AWS meteorological data obtained from KMA (Korean Meteorological Administration) for the generation of 3-dimensional initial meteorological fields. The predicted meteorological variables such as wind speed, wind direction, temperature, and precipitation amount, during 19 ∼ 23, August 2002, are extracted at the nearest grid point to the meteorological monitoring sites, and validated against the observations located over the Korean peninsula. The results show that Mean bias and Root Mean Square Error are 0.9 (m/s), 1.85 (m/s) for wind speed at 10 m above the ground, respectively, and 1.45 ($^{\circ}C$), 2.82 ($^{\circ}C$) for surface temperature. Of particular interest is the distribution of forecasting error predicted by RAMS with respect to the altitude; relatively smaller error is found in the near-surface atmosphere for wind and temperature fields, while it grows larger as the altitude increases. Overall, some of the overpredictions in comparisons with the observations are detected for wind and temperature fields, whereas relatively small errors are found in the near-surface atmosphere. This discrepancies are partly attributed to the oversimplified spacing of soil, soil contents and initial temperature fields, suggesting some improvement could probably be gained if the sub-grid scale nature of moisture and temperature fields was taken into account. However, IOA values for the wind field (0.62) as well as temperature field (0.78) is greater than the 'good' value criteria (> 0.5) implied by other studies. The good value of IOA along with relatively small wind field error in the near surface atmosphere implies that, on the basis of current meteorological data for initial fields, RAMS has good potentials to be used as a operational meteorological model in predicting the urban or local scale 3-dimensional wind fields for the dispersion forecast in association with hazardous chemical releases in Korea.
Jeollabuk-do has announced a future plan for the Saemangeum Wind Farm which includes the installation of fourteen wind turbines in a single line, located 500m back from the Saemangeum Seawall. It is anticipated as a positive effect that, for sea breeze blowing toward land, the average wind speed could be accelerated and the wind speed distribution could be uniformized by dint of the seawall, an upstream structure of the turbines. At the same time it is also anticipated as a negative effect that the strength of wind turbulence could be increased due to the flow separation generated at the back end of the seawall. According to the results of the computational fluid dynamics analysis of this paper, it has been observed that, at the 50m zone on the road surface located at the uppermost part of the Saemangeum Seawall, the average wind speed has been accelerated by approximately 6~7% and that wind shear has been decreased by 70%, but this positive effect disappears in the zone situated beyond the 100m from the back end of the seawall. It has also been observed that flow separation exists to a limited extent only below the bottom of the blade-sweeping circle and, furthermore, does not extend very far downstream of the wind. As a conclusion, it can be said that the seawall neither positively nor negatively affects the proposed Saemangeum Seawall Wind Farm layout.
Wind speeds have long been estimated from C-band VV-polarized SAR data by using the CMOD algorithms such as CMOD4, CMOD5, and CMOD_IFR2. Some SAR data with HH-polarization without any observations in VV-polarization mode should be converted to VV-polarized value in order to use the previous algorithms based on VV-polarized observation. To satisfy the necessity of polarization ratio (PR) for the conversion, we retrieved the conversion parameter from full-polarized SIR-C SAR image off the east coast of Korea. The polarization ratio for SIR-C SAR data was estimated to 0.47. To assess the accuracy of the polarization ratio coefficient, pseudo VV-polarized normalized radar cross section (NRCS) values were calculated and compared with the original VV-polarized ones. As a result, the estimated psudo values showed a good agreement with the original VV-polarized data with an root mean square error by 0.99 dB. We applied the psudo NRCS to the estimation of wind speeds based on the CMOD wind models. Comparison of the retrieved wind field with the ECMWF and NCEP/NCAR reanalysis wind data showed relatively small rms errors of 1.88 and 1.91 m/s, respectively. SIR-C HH-polarized SAR wind retrievals met the requirement of the scatterometer winds in overall. However, the polarization ratio coefficient revealed dependence on NRCS value, wind speed, and incident angle.
Convective heat loss from solar tower receiver is experimentally investigated in wind tunnel with tilt angles and operating conditions. In order to simulate the receiver, an electric heater, which is made of aluminum (width : 100 mm, height : 100mm) is used and installed in the wind tunnel. The convective heat loss from the receiver is dependent on the direction and the velocity of the wind and the surface temperature of the receiver. The tilt angle and surface temperature of the receiver are varied from 0o (cavity facing straight down) and 90o(cavity aligned horizontally) and from $150^{\circ}C$ to $250^{\circ}C$, respectively. Also, the wind speed is changed from 0 to 4m/s. The convective heat loss is obtained by measuring consumed power to the heater to maintain the desired surface temperature. It is concluded that Nusselt number increases with increasing wind speed for all cases. Especially, it is showed that Nusselt number can be maximized when the tilt angle is 30o.
Surface Permanent-Magnetic-Synchronous-Generator (SPMSG) discussed in the present study has operational characteristics such as high rotational speed over 1,000 rpm and centrifugal force of 12 kN·m for each magnet. Structure-development analysis for the minimization of rotor-core weights and the maximization of thermal emission is performed by applying the aluminum-laminated cap which combines the advantages of IPM and SPM in order to overcome the difficulty that attaching the magnet to rotor-core only with an adhesive. In this study, the simulations in terms of structure and electromagnetic were performed with the variable parameters such as shape and thickness of laminated-cap and division method of magnet. As a result, condition for minimized centrifugal force with minimum loss is derived.
