  • The microstructure and the distribution of hardness of Co and A1 alloy powder cladding layer in high carbon 9CrSi alloy steel for roll materials cladded by laser surface cladding were investigated. And, for the evaluation of soundness as the roll materials, we examined the wear resistance of the cladding materials with the wear appratus of pin on disc type. The experimental results showed that the microstructure of laser cladding layer was constituted with the clad surface layer, the alloy layer, the heat treatment layer with base metal. The wear resistance of Ni alloy Powder cladding material was superior to that of Co alloy powder cladding material both at the low speed (0.46m/s) and the high speed(0.92m/s). It seemed that the behavior of wear showed the abrasive wear at the early stage and the adhesive wear at the late stage.

  • Fractal dimension is the method to measure the roughness and the irregularity of something that cannot be defined obviously by Euclidean dimension. And the analysis method of this dimension don't need perfect, accurate boundary and color like analysis lot diameter, perimeter, aspect or reflectivity of wear particles or surface. If we arranged the morphological characteristic of various wear particle by using the characteristic of fractal dimension, it might be very efficient to the diagnosis of driving condition. In order to describe morphology of various wear particle, the wear test was carried out under friction experimental conditions. And fractal descriptors was applied to boundary and surface of wear particle with image processing system. These descriptors to analyze shape and surface wear particle are boundary fractal dimension and surface fractal dimension.

  • The damage level of the die surface was predicted by estimating the surface roughness with a finite element analysis and the wear characteristics. Wear and friction tests were conducted to compare the wear characteristics for three kinds of surface treatments - CrN, TiAlN and AlCrN coatings. A prediction model was derived from the surface roughness results with respect to contact pressure and sliding speed which were obtained from the wear test. Surface roughness values for the damage regions of the die surface were compared between the experiments and the prediction model, which shows fairly good agreement with each other.

  • Recently, it is necessary fir surface materials to be low cost and to keep well endurable and wear in machinery field. Since most good materials with endurance and wear are expensive, they are being studied hard to modify to surface materials with endurance and wear, which overlay with the surface membrane completely. One of them is PTA(Plasma Transferred Arc Overlaying Process) method, which gets into the spotlight. It is thought to be an optimum method, since this method of overlays properly materials with about 3∼5cm surface membrane. It is necessity for the modified materials with endurance and wear to improve within the agricultural environment. Therefore, this research was used the PTA method to endure and wear a material. This method proved to be a reliable method for overlaying the membrane on the materials of an economical agricultural machinery.

  • This study applies various surface patterns to minimize material loss in construction equipment that is subject to severe wear due to sand, such as the wear-resistant steel plates of dump trucks or the teeth of excavators. The relationship between surface morphology and wear behavior is investigated using PLA+ polymer to observe the effect of the surface pattern. Five types of samples - smooth, concave, convex, wavy concave, and wavy convex designs - are created using a 3D printer. A wear experiment is conducted for a duration of 3 h using 6.5 kg of abrasive particles. The mass loss of the samples after the experiment is measured to assess the extent of wear. Additionally, the surface morphology of the samples before and after the experiment is analyzed using SEM and confocal microscopy. The study results reveal that the smooth design exhibits the highest wear loss, whereas the concave and wavy concave designs show relatively lower wear loss. The convex and wavy convex designs exhibit varying contact areas with the abrasive particles depending on the surface pattern, resulting in different levels of wear. Furthermore, a comparison between the experimental results and DEM simulations confirms the observed wear trends. This study reveals the relationship between wear damage according to surface pattern shape and is expected to be of substantial help in the analysis of wear and tear on agricultural and heavy equipment.

  • Compared to metal-to-metal tribology, polymer tribology presents further complexity as it is more prone to be influenced by operating conditions. Over the past two decades, progress in the field of wear of polymers has led to the establishment of more refined wear mechanisms. The current paper establishes the link between different load parameters and the wear rate of polymers, based on experimental investigations. A pin-on-plate reciprocating tribometer was used to examine the wear behaviour of polyamide sliding against a steel counterface, under constant and fluctuating loads, in dry conditions. In addition, the influence of controlled imperfections in the polymer surface upon its wear rate were examined, under cyclic and steady loading, in order to better understand surface fatigue wear of polymers. The imposed imperfections consisted of vertical artificial deep crack (slit) perpendicular or parallel to the direction of sliding. The study concludes with the followings findings; in general, wear of polymers shows a significant tendency to the type of applied load. Under cyclic loads, polymers show an increase in wear rate compared to those tested under static loads. Such increase was found to increase with the increase in cyclic load frequency. It is also demonstrated that surface cracks results in higher wear rates, particularly under cyclic loads.

  • Wear is affected by numerous factors-contact load, sliding velocity and distance, friction coefficient, material properties and environmental conditions. Among these wear factors, surface hardness is one of very important factors to determine wear. But surface hardness is varied by work hardening during repeated sliding contact. In this reason wear rate is increased or decreased with varying surface hardness, and transition of wear mechanism is happened. In this study, the surface hardening by accumulating residual stress was analyzed by considering the repeated sliding Hertzian contact model. The results showed that surface hardness was increased with increasing contact load, friction coefficient and contact number. And the depth of hardening layer, plastic layer and elastic layer depended upon contact load and number, but they didn't depend upon friction coefficient. The predicted surface hardness was about 1.5-1.8 times as hard as the material.

  • In many dynamic seals such as lip seal and compression packings, it is well known that wear occur at the surface of heat treated steel shaft as results of the intervened wear particle. It is widely understood that the dominant wear mechanism related in sealing surfaces is abrasive wear. However, little analytical and experimental studies about this problems have been done until now. In this paper, a contact analysis is carried out using MARC to investigate the wear mechanism in contact seal applications considering elastomeric seal, a elastic perfect-plastic micro-spherical particle and steel surface. Deformed seal shapes, contact and von-Mises stress distributions for various particle sizes and interference are showed. The maximum von-Mises stress within steel shaft was exceeded its yield strength and plastic deformation occurred at steel surface. Therefore, the sealing surface can be also worn by sub-surface fatigue due to wear particles together with well known abrasion. The numerical methods and models used in this paper can be applied in design of dynamic sealing systems, and further intensive studies are required.

  • Wear resistance of cutting tools is one of the most important requirements in terms of the durability of cutting tool itself as well as the machining accuracy of the workpiece. Generally, tungsten carbide ball end mills have been processed with hard coatings for high durability and wear resistance such as diamond coating and tetrahedral amorphous carbon(ta-C) coating. In this study, we developed multilayer ta-C coatings whose wear resistance is comparable to that of diamond coating. First, we prepared single layer ta-C coatings according to the substrate bias voltage and Ar gas flow, and the surface microstructure, raman characteristics, hardness and wear characteristics were evaluated. Then, considering the hardness and wear resistance of the single layer ta-C, we fabricated multilayer coatings consisting of hard and soft layers. As a result, it was confirmed that the wear resistance of the multilayer ta-C coating with hardness of 51 GPa, and elastic recovery rate of 85% improved to 97% compared to that of the diamond coated ball end mill.

  • During contact between surfaces, there is wear and the generation of wear. The particles contained in the lubricating oil carry detailed and important monitoring information about the condition of the machine. Therefore, this paper was undertaken for the Ferrography system of wear debris generated from a lubricated moving machine surface. The lubricating wear test was performed under different experimental conditions using the Falex wear test of the Pin and V-Block types by Ti(C,N) coated. It was shown from the test results that wear particle concentration(WPC), wear severity index(Is) and size distribution have come out all higher with increases in sliding friction time. With the Ferrogram thin leaf wear debris as well as ball and plate type wear particles were observed.
