Various field setup and filtering criteria have been suggested to avoid the near field effects in surface wave methods. Unlike other surface wave methods HWAW method uses the near field component positively. It is possible by using maximum energy point based on time-frequency map and inversion method to consider receiver locations from the source point and body wave component. To verify the HWAW method in the near field numerical study was performed and the wave propagation in the stratified soil media was simulated due to a surface point load. All of five representative soil models were used. The experimental dispersion curves, determined by HWAW method at the various receiver distances in the region of near field, all coincided well with the theoretical dispersion curves determined by 3D forward modeling (Kausel's method). Consequently, it was considered that the HWAW method can provide reliable $V_s$ profiles effectively in the near field.

In this study, empirical site amplifications and S-wave velocity profiles for shallow and deep soils are estimated using earthquake ground motion records in metropolitan Manila, the Philippines. We first apply a spectral inversion technique to the earthquake records to estimate effects of source, path, and local site amplification. The earthquake data used were obtained during 36 moderate earthquakes at 10 strong-motion stations of an earthquake observation network in Manila. The estimated Q value of the propagation path is modelled as $54.6f^{1.1}$. Most of the source spectra can be approximated with the omega-square model. The site amplifications show characteristic features according to surface geological conditions. The amplifications at the sites in the coastal lowland and Marikina Valley shows predominant peaks at frequencies from 1 to 5 Hz, while those in the central plateau are characterised by no dominant peaks. These site amplifications are inverted to subsurface S-wave velocity. We, next, discuss the relationship between the amplifications and average S-wave velocity in the top 30m of the S-wave velocity profiles. The amplifications at low frequencies are well correlated with the averaged S-wave velocity. However, high-frequency amplifications cannot be sufficiently explained by the averaged S-wave velocity in the top 30 m. They are correlated more with the average of S-wave velocity over depths less than 30 m.

This paper describes a new technique for measurement of the displacement less than one-quarter of the wavelength of ultrasonic wave using ultrasonic pulse-echo method. The technique determines the displacement of a journal bearing from the amplitudes of the total reflected waves from the surface of journal inside the bearing. Vibration of journal bearing can be measured without using a very high frequency ultrasonic transduce over 100MHz which must be used in the conventional techniques for the precision measurement of a small displacement. The method also requires no inversion process to extract the thickness from the waveforms of the reflected waves, so that it makes possible on-line measurement of the vibration of journal bearing.

A leaky surface acoustic wave (LSAW) velocity was measured using a scanning acoustic microscope on the ceramic/metal interface in order to investigate material properties. The inverse Fourier transform (IFFT) of the V(z) curve contains the reflectance function of a liquid-specimen interface. So, the longitudinal, transverse, and Rayleigh wave velocities for each layer are obtained by the inversion of the V(z) curve at the same time. This paper contains mainly the experimental procedure for measurements of the LSAW velocity, and the results obtained for the velocity variation of individual layer after the thermal shock. It is shown that this method is useful in measuring the material properties under external stress.

SPT-Uphole method was introduced for the evaluation of near subsurface shear wave velocity (Vs) profile. In SPT-Uphole method, SPT (Standard Penetration Test) which is common in geotechnical site investigation was used as a source and several surface geophones in line were used as receivers. 1D shearwave velocity profile can be obtained in the manner of downhole method, Vs distribution map which is the triangular shape around the boring point can be developed by tomography inversion. To obtain the exact travel time information of shear wave component, a procedure using the magnitude summation of vertical and horizontal components was used based on the evaluation of particle motion at the surface. It was verified that proposed method could give reliable Vs distribution map through the numerical study using the FEM (Finite Element Method) model. Finally, SPT-Uphole method was performed and the feasibility of proposed method was verified in the field.

In this paper, the transient electromagneti wave scattering at dielectric cylinder is studied by new numerical analysis method. Basic formulation of boundary integral equation (BIE) for numerical method is started weighted residual technique. BIE is made to two simultaneous equation at surface inner and outside point of dielectric cylinder in extended boundary condition (EBC) and surface boundary condition (SBC). Numerical method is used Boundary element method (BEM) that is two form, one is direct method and the other is indirect method, so that this method that transformes operator inversion martics is used numerical analysis. A good agreement of this numerical solution and the other results is obtained.
Surface wave techniques were initially based on 2-D plane waves and were later improved to the techniques based the 3-D based cylindrical waves. However, body-wave interference, near-field effect and limited technology in surface wave measurements restricted the use of 3-D cylindrical waves to the 1-D evaluation of subgrade stiffness. In this study, by the numerical simulation of SASW measurements, the dispersion properties of surface waves including vertical, horizontal Rayleigh waves and Love waves were thoroughly investigated in the 3-D domain, and a new filter criteria to minimize the near-field effect was established, which led to CAP (common-array-profiling)-SASW technique. The CAP-SASW technique enabled the evaluation of subgrade stiffness fur a specific subgrade segment, not for a whole section of measurement array. Therefore, a contour plot of subgrade stiffness with a ground-truth quality can be obtained by the CAP-SASW technique. The procedure proposed in this study was verified by comparing the shear-wave velocity profiles with the shear-wave velocity profiles of downhole testing at two geotechnical sites.

This paper introduces a mesh continuation scheme for a one-dimensional inverse medium problem to reconstruct the spatial distribution of elastic wave velocities in heterogeneous semi-infinite solid domains. To formulate the inverse problem, perfectly-matched-layers(PMLs) are introduced as wave-absorbing boundaries that surround the finite computational domain truncated from the originally semi-infinite extent. To tackle the inverse problem in the PML-truncated domain, a partial-differential-equations(PDE)-constrained optimization approach is utilized, where a least-squares misfit between calculated and measured surface responses is minimized under the constraint of PML-endowed wave equations. The optimization problem iteratively solves for the unknown wave velocities with their updates calculated by Fletcher-Reeves conjugate gradient algorithms. The optimization is performed using a mesh continuation scheme through which the wave velocity profile is reconstructed in successively denser mesh conditions. Numerical results showed the robust performance of the mesh continuation scheme in reconstructing target wave velocity profile in a layered heterogeneous solid domain.
The tau-p inversion algorithm is widely employed to generate starting models with most computer programs, which implement refraction tomography. This algorithm emphasises the vertical resolution of many layers, and as a result, it frequently fails to detect even large lateral variations in seismic velocities, such as the decreases which are indicative of shear zones. This study demonstrates the failure of the tau-p inversion algorithm to detect or define a major shear zone which is 50m or 10 stations wide. Furthermore, the majority of refraction tomography programs parameterise the seismic velocities within each layer with vertical velocity gradients. By contrast, the Generalized Reciprocal Method (GRM) inversion algorithms emphasise the lateral resolution of individual layers. This study demonstrates the successful detection and definition of the 50m wide shear zone with the GRM inversion algorithms. The existence of the shear zone is confirmed by a 2D analysis of the head wave amplitudes and by numerous closely spaced orthogonal seismic profiles carried out as part of a later 3D refraction investigation. Furthermore, an analysis of the shot record amplitudes indicates that a reversal in the seismic velocities, rather than vertical velocity gradients, occurs in the weathered layers. The major conclusion reached in this study is that while all seismic refraction operations should aim to provide as accurate depth estimates as is practical, those which emphasise the lateral resolution of individual layers generate more useful results for geotechnical and environmental applications. The advantages of the improved lateral resolution are obtained with 2D traverses in which the structural features can be recognised from the magnitudes of the variations in the seismic velocities. Furthermore, the spatial patterns obtained with 3D investigations facilitate the recognition of structural features such as faults which do not display any intrinsic variation or 'signature' in seismic velocities.
The crustal structure of Korean Peninsula have been investigated by analyzing group velocity dispersion data of surface wave. Cross.correlation of seismic background motions (Campillo and Paul, 2003; Shapiro et al., 2005) has been applied to estimate the short.period Rayleigh. and Love.wave group velocity dispersion characteristics of the region. Standard processing procedures were applied to the cross.correlation, except that signal whitening was used in place of one.bit sampling equalize power in signals from different times. Multiple.filter analysis was used to extract the group velocities from the estimate Green's functions, which were then use to image the spatially varying dispersion at periods between 0.5 and 20 seconds. The tomographic inversion technique used inverted all periods simultaneously to provide a smooth dispersion curve as a function of period in addition to the usual smooth spatial image for a given period. The Gyeongsang Basin in the southeastern part of the peninsula is clearly resolved with lower group velocities.
