When the wall temperature is very high, a stable vapor film covers the heat transfer surface. The vapor film creates a strong thermal resistance when heat is transferred to the liquid though it. This phenomenon, called "film boiling" is very important in the heat treatment of metals, the design of cryogenic heat exchangers, and the emergency cooling of nuclear reactors. In the practical engineering problems of the transient cooling process of a high temperature wall, the wall temperature history, the variation of the heat transfer coefficients, and the wall superheat at the rewetting points, are the main areas of concern. These three areas are influenced in a complex fashion such factors as the initial wall temperature, the physical properties of both the wall and the coolant, the fluid temperature, and the flow state. Therefore many kinds of specialized experiments are necessary in the creation of precise thermal design. The object of this study is to investigate the heat transfer characteristics in the transient cooling process of a high temperature wall. The slow transient cooling experiment was carried out with a copper block of high thermal capacity. The block was 240 mm high and 79 mm O.D.. The coolant flowed throuogh the center of a 10 mm diameter channel in the copper block. In the copper block, three sheathed thermocouples were placed in a line perpendicular to the flow. These thermocouples were used to take measurements of the temperature histories of the copper block.
The ankle is a complex structure supporting the entire musculoskeletal system during standing and walking. And so the goals of operative treatment for ankle fractures are to obtain an anatomical reduction that is maintained by stable fixation, resulting in a healed fracture and recovery of normal function. The 64 patients who had ankle fractures were treated by arthroscopic reduction(20 cases) and open reduction (43 cases) in Konkuk university hospital from February 1991 to October 1997 and the results were analyzed in clinical and radiological aspects. The following results were obtained. According to the criteria of Meyer, arthroscopic assisted reduction group had good or excellent results in 18 cases (90%) and open reduction group good or excellent in 35 cases (83%). The difference of the results was not significant statistically, but arthroscopic assisted reduction technique has several advantages over open technique; the best assessment of articular surface, lower wound problem, postoperatively faster rate of rehabilitation and minor discomfort.
The combined SHARON (Single reactor system for High ammonium Removal Over Nitrite)-ANAMMOX (Anaerobic ammonium oxidation) reactor were operated in mesophilic condition ($35^{\circ}C$). In this study, microbial granulation and characteristics of SHARON and ANAMMOX sludges were investigated using settling test, Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Fluorescence In Situ Hybridization (FISH). In SHARON reactor, Aerobic granulation with diameter of 1.5~2.5 mm was accomplished but aerobic granulation was weaker than anaerobic granular sludge. Initial seed sludge of ANAMMOX reactor was used as attached media for biofilm growth. ANAMMOX sludge was more compact and rounder rather than seed sludge. Though ANAMMOX sludge has high activity, it has lower settling ability than the seed granule. The color of ANAMMOX sludge was changed from dark to redish brown granular with diameter of 1~2 mm. In FISH of ANAMMOX sludge, high fraction of Candidatus B. stuttgartiensis which paid great role of nitrogen conversion was detected. Also, FISH results reveals that ANAMMOX bacteria inhabit at inner parts near surface, having advantages in utilization of substrates and protection from oxygen inhibition.
This study was performed in order to produce the basic data for developing prediction techniques of desalinization to be applicable to reclaimed tidal lands at the beginning stage. the desalinization experiments were carried out by two water management practices, namely, the leaching method by subsurface drainage and the rinsing method by surface drainage. The 5 soil samples used in this study were collected in 4 tidal land reclamation projects. Regression equations were obtained in order to investigate the changes of electrical conductivity during the desalinization of reclaimed tidal lands and to estimate water requirements for desalinization. The results obtained from this study were summarized as follows: 1. According to USDA Salinity Laboratory classification system of salt affected soils the reclaimed tidal land soils used in this study were saline-sodic soils with the high electrical conductivity and the high exchangeable sodium percentage. 2. With the increase of the water requirements for desalinization the electrical conductivity was decreased with high degree of correlationships and the desalinization effects were remakable in both the leaching method and the rinsing method. 3. In case of the leaching method the electrical conductivity had been reduced below the classification value of salt affected soils when the depth o water leached per unit depth of soil (Dwl/Ds) was 0.3 and the desalinization effects showed a tendency to be much the same in each treatment.
The combined method utilizing airborne LiDAR and GIS data is suggested to extract 3-dimensional hybrid city model including roads and buildings. Combining the two types of data is more efficient to estimate the elevations of various types of roads and buildings than using either LiDAR or GIS data only. This method is particularly useful to model the overlapped roads around the so called spaghetti junction. The preliminary model is constructed from the LiDAR data, which can give wrong information around the overlapped parts. And then, the erratic vertex points are detected by imposing maximum vertical grade allowable on the elevated roads. For the purpose of efficiency, the erratic vertex points are corrected through linear interpolation method. To avoid the erratic treatment of the LiDAR data on the facades of buildings 2 meter inner-buffer zone is proposed to efficiently estimate the height of a building. It is validated by the mean value (=5.1%) of differences between estimated elevations on 2 m inner buffer zone and randomly observed building elevations.
Membrane process has been one of the widely applied wastewater treatment options, especially in field. However, one of the tricky issues in the process is to treat concentrates generated from reverse osmosis (RO) system in a manner of saving cost with maximum efficiency for treating a wide range of contaminants. Stimulated with the challenging issues, we have conducted a series of experimental studies in the evaluation for removing organics and nutrients using activated carbon. Results indicated that while powdered activated carbon (PAC) efficiently removed organics and the extent of removal was proportional to the PAC dosage, little removal of nitrogen and phosphorus was observed despite increasing the PAC dose. Interestingly, applying PAC was superior in removing organics than using granular activated carbon (GAC). These results suggest smaller particle size with higher surface area could provide greater chemical reactivity in removing organics.
Submerged plants whose most of vegetative mass are below the water surface can have great effects on wetland biogeochemistry and water purification through their photosynthesis and nutrient uptake processes. In this study, change of dissolved oxygen concentration and pH as well as nutrient removal capacity of the submerged plant dominant wetland were investigated using wetland mesocosm experiments. Obvious periodic DO and pH fluctuation was observed due to photosynthetic activities of the submerged plants. It implies that the submerged plants can provide periodic or sequential changes of oxic and anoxic conditions that affect nitrification and denitrification processes and contribute permanent nitrogen removal in the wetland system. The pH changes in the wetland mesocosm suggested that submerged plant could also play an important role as a temporary $CO_2$ storage. Higher nutrient removal efficiency was observed in the submerged plant dominant wetland mesocosm. The removal efficiencies under experimental conditions were 38.89, 84.70, 91.21, 70.76, 75.30% of TN, DIN, $NH_4-N$, TP, $PO_4-P$ in the wetland mesocosm, while those were 26.11, 57.34, 63.87, 28.19, 55.15% in the control treatment, respectively.
There have been many studies on the biological phenomena of Bioglasses, which nay be used as implant materials in human body. However, not many works on the Bioglass compositions have been reported. In the present study, the effect of Al2O3 substitution for SiO2 in Bioglass of Na2O-CaO-P2O5-SiO2 system on its structure and properties was examined. Infrared and Raman spectroscopic studies for the glass structural analysis, differential thermal analysis and X-ray diffraction analysis for crystallization of the glass were perfomed. Several physical properties, such as thermal expansion coefficient, softening point, microhardness and reaction phenomena, were also measured. The major crystalline phase, after heat treatment of the glasses, was Na2Ca2(SiO2)3 and the crystal was transformed into other phase with increased substitution of Al2O3. The added Al2O3 reduced non-bridging oxygen in glass structure and thermal expansion coefficient, but increased glass density, sofening point and microhardness. When the glasses are reacted in Tris-buffer solution, the substituted Al2O3 inhibited the formation of hydroxyapatite on the Bioglas surface, and no hydroxyapatite was formed for the sample which contained more than 6wt.% of Al2O3 even if they were reacted for 600 hours.
Thin films of $BaTiO_3$ system were prepared by radio frequency(rf)/dc magnetron sputtering method. We have investigated crystal structure, surface morphology and PTCR(positive-temperature coefficient of resistance) characteristics of the specimen depending on second heat-treatment temperatures. Second heat treatments of the specimen were performed in the temperature range of 400 to $1350^{\circ}C$. X-ray diffraction patterns of $BaTiO_3$ thin films show that the specimen heat treated below $600^{\circ}C$ is an amorphous phase and the one heat treated above $1100^{\circ}C$ forms a poly-crystallization. In the specimen heat-treated at $1300^{\circ}C$, a lattice constant ratio (c/a) was 1.188. Scanning electron microscope(SEM) image of $BaTiO_3$ thin films of the specimen heat treated in between 900 and $1100^{\circ}C}$ shows a grain growth. At $1100^{\circ}C$, the specimen stops grain-growing and becomes a poly-crystallization.
This study is performed to investigate the difference of the spinal stability system with and without low back pain. There were 9 participants with low back pain and 9 asymptomatic subjects to be recruited, they were measured thoracic and lumbar curvature, trunk muscle activation in upright sitting postures and slump sitting, back muscle endurance, and lumbar proprioception. Spinal curvature and surface electromyography of 4 trunk muscles were measured in an upright sitting postures and slump sitting in 18 subjects. The result of the study was that there were significant differences between the groups in spinal curvature (p<.05), significantly higher external oblique activity and less internal oblique in the low back pain group than the healthy subjects (p<.05), and significantly less proprioception in the low back pain group (p<.05). But there was not a significant difference between the trunk muscle endurance groups. According to the result, the low back pain group had greater thoracic extension and higher global muscle activity in the upright sitting posture and less proprioception. This study was useful to suggest postural training for normal muscle activation, selective muscle strengthening to prevent chronic deterioration, and helpful in making a treatment plan to indicate a synthetic care method that includes increasing proprioception.
