  • Scaffolds of tissue engineering should be biocompatible and biodegradable for cell attachment, proliferation and differentiation. In the various scaffold fabrication, 3D printing technique can make the three dimensional scaffold with interconnected pores for cell ingrowth. Polycaprolactone (PCL) is biodegradable polyester with a low melting temperature and has been approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). In this study, PCL scaffold was fabricated by 3D bioprinting system and surface modification of PCL scaffold was controlled by NaOH treatment. Morphological change and wetability of NaOH-treated scaffold were observed by SEM and contact angle measurement system. The remnant of PCL treated with NaOH was measured by ATR-FTIR. In vitro study of scaffolds was evaluated with WST-1 and ALP activity assay. NaOH treatment of PCL scaffolds increased surface roughness, hydrophilicity, cell proliferation and osteogenic differentiation. These results indicate that NaOH-treated PCL scaffold made by 3D bioprinting has tissue engineered potential for the development of biocompatible material.

  • This study describes the processes undertaken for the conservation treatment of metal artifacts excavated in Hasong-ri, Yeongwol, Gangwon-do and the results of the related surface composition analysis. X-ray fluorescence analysis (XRF) was applied to analyze the surface composition of a small gilt-bronze wind chime, two clappers, and a small gourd-shaped bronze bottle. The gourd-shaped bronze bottle was investigated using radiography to examine its internal structure. The wind chime and clappers were excavated from the same location. A gilt layer was identified on the wind chime, but surface corrosion made it difficult to identify any such layers on the clappers. The element analysis revealed that the wind chime was made of bronze in a Cu-Sn-Pb ternary system and was gilt-plated using mercury amalgam. The clappers were made from copper with a small amount of gold detected, but did not show any evidence of mercury. Since a thick corrosion layer was affixed to the surface of each clapper, it was impossible to identify the surface composition and determine if the clappers had been gilded. It is possible that the gold detected from the clappers was a foreign substance or had detached from the giltbronze wind chime buried alongside them. The small gourd-shaped bronze bottle was investigated through surface element analysis and radiography to verify if it was a type of silver bottle used as currency during the Goryeo dynasty. The radiography photography identified that a small hole in the middle of the base had been stopped up. The general surface analysis did not detect silver, which suggests that the bottle was made of bronze instead and was not one of the silver bottles used as a means of currency.

  • Synchronized cat kidney cells chronically infected with feline leukemia virus (FeLV) were used to study virus production, the synthesis of group specific antigen (gag) and envelope (env) proteins, the expression of env protein on the cell surface during the cell cycle, and the stability of viral RNA. As detecting method, we developed the radioimmunoassay (RIA) system using beta-emission of $^{131}I$ and demonstrated the validity of this system by comparison with routine RIA system using gamma-emission of $^{125}I$. The produced virus was analysed by developed RIA interval was determined by measuring reverse transcriptase activity. The results show that infected cells produce the complete virus particle containing products of gag, env and pol genes of FeLV, and maximum virus production occurs during mitosis of synchronized cells. Labeling of the cell surface of synchronized cells with $^{131}I$ shows that the amount of $gp70^{env}$ on the cell surface parallels cellular gorwth. Therefore, the cell cycle-dependent release of virus is not petition RIA of synchronized cells with $^{131}I$ labeled viral proteins synthesis during the cell cycle. The rate of synthesis of gag protein shows three peaks, corresponding to the $G_1,\;late\;S\;and\;late\;G_2$ phases of cell cycle. But the rate of synthesis of env protein dose not change, suggesting that in these cells the synthesis of these two gene products in controlled seperately. In Actionomycin D treated cells, the synthesis of viral proteins decreased sharply from 8 hours after treatment, and the late S and $G_2$ peaks of gag protein synthesis were disappeared. This shows the stability of viral RNA for about 6 hours in the absence of continuing viral RNA synthesis.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect retention element formed by metal surface treatment method on the bond strength of indirect composite resin and metal. The metal specimens were cast from Ni-Cr alloy($Rexillium^{(R)}$ III). They were divided into 5 groups by applied retention element: $50{\mu}m$ aluminium oxide sandblasting group, $250{\mu}m$ aluminium oxide sandblasting group, 0.2mm retention crystal group, 10% $H_{2}SO_{4}$ solution etching group, $110{\mu}m$ $Rocatec^{TM}$ Plus system group. Total 50 metal specimens were veneered with Sinfony indirect composite resin system. Specimens were tested for shear bond strength on an Instron universal testing machine and fracture mode of fractured specimens were analyzed by SEM and EDS. 1. 0.2 mm retention crystals were most effective in improving the resin-metal shear bond strength (p<0.05). 2. Sandblasting by $250{\mu}m$ aluminium oxide were more effective than sandblasting by $50{\mu}m$ aluminium oxide in improving the resin-metal shear bond strength(p<0.05). 3. Fracture mode of resin-metal fractured surface were cohesive failure mode in 0.2mm retention crystal, mixed failure mode in sandblasted specimens, etched specimens and the specimens sandblasted with $110{\mu}m$ $Rocatec^{TM}$ Plus system.

  • AI, AIN and additives such as Li$_2$CO$_3$, Y$_2$O$_3$ and CaCO$_3$ which promoted nitridation were mixed, formed and heat-treated in nitrogen atmosphere. The effect of solvent, additive and temperature on nitridation of AI-AIN system was studied. When ethanol containing 1 wt% oleic acid was used as a mixing solvent, the formation of oxide was minimized due to surface modification of AI and AIN particles. The addition of Li$_2$CO$_3$ or CaCO$_3$ as an additive extremely diminished the formation of oxide which formed during heat treatment for nitridation compared with the addition of Y$_2$O$_3$.

  • This work was carried out for the measurement of vibration and rotation temperature using the optical emission spectroscopy of nitrogen second positive system in the small plasma torch. Among emissions $N_2$ SP systems, the emission of $N_2$ SP(0-0) was so strong. Emission peaks of SP system increased until the position of 12.5[mm] from the end of plasma torch, after that it decreased. However, vibration temperature decreased from 1540[K] to 1000[K] at the position of 12.5[mm]. In addition, rotational temperature was about 400[K] at the position of 10[mm] and it increased a little as much of 420[K] at 12.5[mm]. Consequently, the plasma torch discussed in this work is possible to apply in the surface treatment process under the low temperature.

  • A (disk-like liquid crystal (DLC) monomer/liquid crystals(LCs)/chiral dopant/dichroic dye) composite was irradiated with ultraviolet (UV) light. The (DLC network/LCs/chiral dopant/dichroic dye) was formed in the homeotropically oriented smectic A(SA) phase by the surface orientation treatment and the electric field. A focal-conic texture exhibiting strong light scattering appeared in the heat-induced chiral nematic phase(N${\ast}$) of the composite upon heating. Thermo-recording in the composite system has been realized by using a He-Ne laser. The laser irradiation was induced the phase transitions from SA phase to chiral nematic(N${\ast}$) phase in the composite system.

  • Advanced drinking water production systems, which not only good quality product water, but also provide easy management and mainenance of facilities, and operate on a smaller site area, have been expected to be developed for some time. We are going ahead with a program to deveop an advanced drinking water production system, using immersed membrane filtration combined with biological activated carbon, to meet the need described above. The demonstration plant tests been conducted with surface water from the Yodo-river since Dec. 1998 to measure treatment performance, reliability, and controllability of the system. The quality of product water has consistently remained at a very high level for about 2 years under controlled conditions. Results showed that the re-circulation granular biological activated carbon could suppress the increase of membrane pressure difference and promote a reduction of dissolved organic matter. • Wool fabric having high moisture content were treated with fluorocarbon-based water and oil repellent finishing agents by pad-dry-cure system. Three types of finishing agents which were regular-type or nano-type were adapted to compare the surface chemical composition, water and oil repellent property, crease recovery angle, and durability to repeated laundering. From the surface chemical compositions resulted by ESCA and C1s curve-fitting, it was shown that the regular-type finishing agent were easily taken off from the finished wool fabrics after repeated laundering. On the other hand, the fluoroalkyl groups of nano-type finishing agents turned round from fabric surface to fiber internal after repeated laundering. The water repellency of the wool fabrics treated with regular-type agent had a little changes according to the treatment condition changes and sharply decreased with repeated laundering. However, these values when treated with nano-type agents increased with the concentration and cure temperature and were maintained after 20 times laundering. The wool fabrics treated with nano-type agent had a great oil repellency irrespective of treatment conditions. Furthermore, the wrinkle recovery values of the wool fabrics treated with nano-type agents were higher than those of the fabrics treated with regular-type agent and were unchanged after 20 times laundering.

  • To improve the efficiency of removal of bacteria and virus with DynaSand Filters used for treatment of recycling wastewater from aquaculture, effect of biofilm formation on bacterial transport through coated sand was estimated. At the neutral pH (pH 7.0), the coated sand was positive of zeta potential (surface charge). Column experiments were also carried out to test the effect of uncoated sand as well as coated sand with Al and Fe. The coated sand influenced more significantly the surface properties, adsorption and transport than the uncoated sand. The leaching batch system investigated for synthetic water showed concentrations of 7.47, 4.80, 20.89 and 7.23 mg/L for the uncoated sand, coated sand with Al, Fe and Al+Fe, respectively. Hence there are significant differences among the tested coatings with reference to bacterial transport and surface properties.
