Effect of UV-LED Irradiation on Respiration and Ethylene Production of Cherry Tomatoes (방울토마토의 호흡 및 에틸렌 발생에 미치는 자외선 LED의 효과)

  • UV light irradiation is known to give beneficial effects on fresh produce preservation. A container system equipped with UV-LED was fabricated for storing cherry tomatoes under computer-controlled conditions of intermittent on-off cycles (1 hour on/1 hour off). Wavelength (365 and 405 nm) and physical location of the LED (2 and 5 cm above fruit) were studied as variables affecting the respiration, ethylene production and quality preservation of the fruits at 10 and $20^{\circ}C$. 365 nm wavelength gave much higher radiation intensity than 405 nm, and intensity on surface decreased in inverse proportion to square of distance from LED. When compared to non-irradiated control, UV-LED irradiation decreased the respiration by 5-10% at $10^{\circ}C$ while there was no obvious effect at $20^{\circ}C$. Ethylene production was reduced when the fruits were placed at 5 cm distance, while there was no significant difference from control at 2 cm location. The reduction of ethylene production at 5 cm was more pronounced at $20^{\circ}C$. UV-LED irradiation was shown to have delayed increase or lower concentration in carotenoids compared to control treatment. Any negative effect of UV-LED irradiation on ascorbic acid content and firmness was not observed.

Extension of Storage Time of Chicon using Nanoparticle of Machilus thunbergii Extracts (후박추출물의 나노입자화를 통한 치콘의 저장기간 연장)

  • Machilus thunbergii has been showed relation to antimicrobial activity on minimal inhibitoty concentration (MIC) and colony forming inhibitory activity (CFIA) test, so that can be used to food preservatives for green vegetable. Nanoparticles has been made of edible materials. 80% of the nanoparticles has been characterized by image analyser and electron microscopy, showing in the range under 300 nm diameter. The sprayed nanoparticles remained on the surface of chicon even after washing by dilution water, then activate biological activities for storage of chicon with storing and releasement system of extracts. Chicon treated nanoparticle has been kept fresh condition about 2 months longer than 3 weeks of the non-treated control. It can be tell that treatment with nanoparticle of M. thunbergii extracts extends storage time of chicon possibly by inhibition of ethylene production through efficiency control on cell breathing.

Comparison of Chlorine, Chlorine Dioxide and Ozone as Disinfectants in Drinking Water (정수소독공정에 이용되는 염소, 이산화염소, 오존 소독제의 비교, 고찰에 관한 연구)

  • The experiments for the characterization of inactivation were performed in a series of batch processes with the total coliform as a general indicator organism based on chlorine, chlorine dioxide and ozone as disinfectants. The water sam-ples were taken from the outlet of settling basin in a conventional surface water treatment system that is provided with the raw water drawn from the mid-stream of the Han River. The inactivation of total coliform was experimentally ana-lyzed for the dose of disinfectant contact time, pH, Temperature and DOC. The nearly 2.4,3.0,3.9 log inactivation of total coliform killed by injecting 1 mか1 at 5 minutes for chlorine, chlorine dioxide and ozone. For the inactivation of 99.9%(3 log), Disinfectants required were 1.70, 1.00 and 0.60 mか1 for chlorine, chlorine dioxide and ozone, respec-tively. The higher the pH is, the poorer the disinfections effects are in the range of pH 6-9 by using chlorine and ozone. But the irfluence of pH value on killing effects of chlorine dioxide is weak. The parameters estimated by the models of Chick-Watson, Hom, and Selleck from our experimental data obtained for chlorine are: log(N/ $N_{0}$ )=-0.16 CT with n= 1, log(N/ $N_{0}$ )=-0.71 $C^{0.87}$T with n$\neq$1, for Chicks-Watson model, log (N/ $N_{0}$ )= -1.87 $C^{0.47}$ $T^{0.36}$ for Hom model. For chlorine dioxide are: log(N/ $N_{0}$ )= -1.53 CT with n = 1, log(N/ $N_{0}$ )= -2.29 $C^{0.94}$T with n$\neq$1,, for Chicks-Watson model, log(N/ $N_{0}$ )= -3.64 $C^{0.43}$ $T^{0.24}$ for Hom model and for ozone are: log(N/ $N_{0}$ )= -2.59 CT with n = 1, log(N/ $N_{0}$ )= -2.28 $C^{0.36}$T with n$\neq$1, for Chicks-Watson model, log(N/ $N_{0}$ )= -4.53 $C^{0.26}$ $T^{0.19}$ for Hom model.19/ for Hom model.

Current Generation from Microbial Fuel Cell Using Stainless Steel Wire as Anode Electrode (스텐철사를 전극으로 이용하는 미생물연료전지의 전류 발생)

  • Anode electrode in a microbial fuel cell (MFC) should transfer the receiving electron as well as provide large surface area that can be immobilized microorganisms. Microorganisms' population is one of important factors to improve the current generation and to treat the livestock wastewater by biological treatment. These studies were attempted to investigate if stainless-steel wire skein (SSWS) could be used as anode electrode replacement a graphite felt electrode in microbial fuel cell. For these studies, pretreated livestock wastewater was used diluted to 500 mg/L as COD before use. At this time, the current showed a little difference of about 5% when using each of a SSW and graphite felt (control). There was no significant difference in the current value. The organic removal rate in the microbial fuel cells used graphite felt and SSWS was 82.4% and 88.3%, respectively. The COD removal in the MFC used the SSWS was higher than that of graphite felt. Ammonium nitrogen was showed similar trend in two case all. These results about current generation and organic matter reduction seem possible that SSWS was used to anode electrode. When SSWS is used, the initial investment for system construction is expected to be able to reduce by approximately 1/50.

The Effects of Warm and Cold Stimulations on the Temperature Distribution in the Prostate (냉.온열의 반복 자극이 전립선 내부의 온도 분포에 미치는 영향)

  • Hyperthermia using transrectal thermal probes has been used for a noninvasive treatment of prostate diseases. However it is known that heating the rectal wall at excessively high temperature can lead to destruction of the rectal mucous membrane. and it is difficult to maintain an optimum temperature over the entire prostate. Thus, a more accurate understanding of the heat transfer mechanism between prostate and hyperthermia system is needed Numerical analysis was performed to investigate how the cold/warm stimulations on the prostate surface affect the temperature distribution in the prostate model. The general purpose software "FLUENT" was used for obtaining a finite volume solution to the unsteady conduction equation and to calculate the time-varying temperature in the prostate. Effects of the warm/cold stimulations and the stimulation frequency on the temperature distribution were simulated. and we visualized how hyperthermia affected the inside of the prostate. It was found that the effect of hyperthermia by using a typical heating method is limited due to the low thermal conductivity of the prostate. Consecutive repetitions of warm and cold stimulations were considered to provide the thermal irritations inside a prostate. The effects of temperature difference and duration of warm/cold stimulations were investigated, and basic data for the optimum period and effective patterns of stimulations were obtained. A simplified bioheat equation was also solved to describe effects of the blood flow on the blood-tissue heat transfer. The effect of blood flow was not dominant compared to that of warm/cold stimulations. These results might be used as data for design of prostate treating probe, prostatic therapy and thermal stimulation effects on the prostate.

  • Monte Carlo simulations are widely used as the most accurate technique for dose calculation in radiation therapy. In this paper, the GATE6(Geant4 Application for Tomographic Emission ver.6) code was employed to calculate the dosimetric performance of the photon beams from a linear accelerator(LINAC). The treatment head of a Varian 21EX Clinac was modeled including the major geometric structures within the beam path such as a target, a primary collimator, a flattening filter, a ion chamber, and jaws. The 6 MV photon spectra were characterized in a standard $10{\times}10cm^2$ field at 100 cm source-to-surface distance(SSD) and subsequent dose estimations were made in a water phantom. The measurements of percentage depth dose and dose profiles were performed with 3D water phantom and the simulated data was compared to measured reference data. The simulated results agreed very well with the measured data. It has been found that the GATE6 code is an effective tool for dose optimization in radiotherapy applications.

The Physicochemical Characteristics of Marinated Beef Galbi under Different Cooking Conditions (양념 소갈비의 조리과정에서의 물리화학적 특성 평가)

  • Marinated beef galbi is a traditional Korean dish cooked with soy sauce, pear juice, onion, sesame oil, and sugar. However, there are many differences in beef galbi, including flavor and physicochemical aspects, depending on cooking conditions. Therefore, the physicochemical characteristics of marinated beef galbi prepared through various recipes was evaluated for its effects on pH, texture, aging, proteolysis, heating conditions, cooking time, and flavor compounds (pyrazines, IMPs, or FAAs). There were significant differences in salt concentration (0.8~3.03%), pH (4.89~6.22), and solid soluble contents (1.34-6.31 Brix) between recipes in this study. In the Pearson assay for sensory evaluation, overall preference correlated well with texture (a well-known sensory attribute in meat evaluation). Controlling the pH of meat through soaking in lemon solution, alkali water, phosphate, and baking powder solution, improved water holding capacity as much as 9 to 15% compared with the control. The myofibril index (MFI) of marinated meat stored at $4^{\circ}C$ increased 32% with 24 hours of aging and reached 39% at 48 hours of aging, and its fragmentation was observed through microscopy. SDS-PAGE showed hydrolysis of acid-soluble collagen by the pear juice, possibly related to meat tenderness. On the basis of surface temperature, the cooking time was estimated to be 8 minutes with pan heating at $170^{\circ}C$, 6 minutes at $270{\sim}300^{\circ}C$, and 4 minutes with charcoal at $700{\sim}900^{\circ}C$. Different pyrazine compounds, such as 2-methyl-3-phenylpyrrol(2,3-b) pyrazine (the typical product of the browning reaction) was mainly detected, and IMP (one of the main taste compounds in beef) was in higher amounts with the charcoal treatment, potentially related to its flavor preference among treatments. Our results demonstrate an effective case study and cooking system for beef galbi.

Precisely Nondestructive Diagnosis and Slope Stability of the Bonghwa Bukjiri Maaeyeoraejwasang (Rock-Carved Seated Buddha Statue), Korea (봉화 북지리마애여래좌상의 비파괴 정밀진단과 사면안정성 분석)

  • The Bukjiri Maaeyeoraejwasang (National Treasure No. 201) consists of two-mica granite in medium size, which was the simbol of power in the region of the Silla period. Magnetic susceptibility of the host rock was measured as 0.41(${\times}10^{-3}$ SI unit), which has the similar range with surrounding outcrop. The Buddha developed parallel discontinuous plane of NE to SW strike and damaged seriously by exfoliation, granular disintegration and brown discoloration as 41.5%, 16.7% and 40.0%, respectively. As a result of the ultrasonic velocity, which was relatively weak values as 1,629m/s (Buddha area) and 1,549m/s (surrounding outcrop), improved about 900m/s compared to last treatment. From the results of the evaluation for slope stability, identified the possibility of toppling failure in the Buddha, and planar and wedge failure in host rock. Therefore, we suggest for the safely conservation of the Buddha, continuance monitoring for understand behavior of discontinuity system of the surface, and necessitate foundation reinforcement method for the rock which has the danger of collapse.

Numerical Simulations of Water Quality in ManKyong River (QUAL-II E 모델에 의(依)한 만경강(萬頃江)의 수질예측(水質豫測))

  • The QUAL-II E Model was applied to predict the water quality of the Mankyong drainage System, and lead to following conclusion. 1. The difference between computed and measured BOD at the M-3 (Bakgugeong) station was within 10%, indicating that the application of the QUAL-IIE Model for the prediction of water quality was satisfactory thus far. 2. The application of the model states that the discharge of concentrated pollutants at the M-1 station on the Jeonju stream, located 41Km upstream from the estuary, causes the worst problems. The sluice which extends residence time and enlarges watery surface improves water quality by a Self-purification process at the M-3 station, 28km upstream from the estuary. 3. The accuracy of the model diminished when this model was applied on the estuary downstream of the sluice. Hence, the application of the model on the estuary needs to be used with caution. 4. Among the conputed water quality parameters, BOD is the worst problem. At the M-3 station, BOD is computed to be 26.6 mg/1 in 1996, 30.7 mg/1 in 2,001, 33.0 mg/l in 2006, and 37.5 mg/1 in 2011. When preventive measures against water pollution are not properly exercised, severe problems in irrigation and water resources are expected. This study will be of used in the selection of irrigation water intake points, the criteria of effluent treatment, the management of water resources, and the establishment of water quality managemont policy.

Studies on Expanding Application for the Recycling of Coal Ash in Domestic (국내 석탄재 재활용 확대 방안 연구)

  • Coal ash is generated from coal-fired thermal power plants every year. The remaining quantity of coal ash ends up in the landfills except for the recycled portion, and the existing ash pond capacity is limited almost. Currently, the difficulties are faced in building a new ash treatment plant because of the concerns about the environmental impacts of landfills at individual plant facilities. In terms of minimizing the environmental impact, the recycling and effective uses of coal ash are recognized as urgent issues to be challenged. Accordingly, this study examines the obstacles in expanding the recycling of the coal ash in South Korea and proposes solutions based on the case study analysis. The analysis results are as follows: 1) specific recycling guidelines and standards are required to be established in accordance with the contact medium (soil, ground water, surface water and sea water) and the chemical. 2) by providing the recognition environmentally safe in recycling the coal ash, transparency in establishing the planning stages and active communication with the community through promotion and research are essentially needed. 3) practical support system is required to encourage the power plant companies to use the coal ash as beneficial use.
