Sliding Wear Properties of Borided Iron and Steel in Fluidized Bed Furnace (유동상열처리로에 의해 BORIDING처리한 철강재료의 미끄럼마모특성연구)

  • Boriding is one of the chemical methods to achieve the case hardening of steel as well as nitriding or carburizing. The surface layer of the borided steel shows higher hardness and exhibits better resistance to corrosion or fatigue than the nitrided or carburized steel. The great majority of previous studies were confined to mild steel or some alloy steel. To enlarge the application, ductile cast iron (DCI) as a material for boriding has been tried in this study. Thus, sliding wear test has conducted using a pin-on-disc machine to compare between borided DCI and mild steel in fluidized bed furnace. The results show that the wear resistance of borided DCI is improved. Especially it is more efficient in the case of occurence of the mechanical wear.

Effect of Austempering Temperatures on the Fractures Characteristic of Grey Cast Iron (오스템퍼링 처리한 회주철의 파괴특성에 미치는 오스템퍼링 온도의 영향에 관한 연구)

  • Grey cast iron containing a small amount of Cu and Mo to improve the effect of heat treatment and microstructure were cast and them austenitized. After austenitizing the specimens of castings were austempered at 250$^{\circ}C$, 300$^{\circ}C$ and 350$^{\circ}C$. The effects of matrix structures on mechanical properties and fracture characteristics at the different austempering temperature were investigated. Tensile strength, hardness and impact toughness of austempered grey cast iron showed maximum valve 359 MPa, 321 HB, 3.9 CVN respectively at the lowest austempering temperature, 250$^{\circ}C$. $K_{IC}$ of gref cast iron at a austempering temperature, 250$^{\circ}C$, showed maximum 44 MPa.$m^{1/2}$ even though the amount of retained austenite in it is only 16%. This mainly comes from the refinement of the retained austenite. Quasi-cleavage pattern with a little fit of fibrous pattern was shown on the fractured surface of austempered grey cast iron at all of the temperatures tested.

Arsenic Removal from Water Using Various Adsorbents: Magnetic Ion Exchange Resins, Hydrous Ion Oxide Particles, Granular Ferric Hydroxide, Activated Alumina, Sulfur Modified Iron, and Iron Oxide-Coated Microsand

  • The equilibrium and kinetic adsorption of arsenic on six different adsorbents were investigated with one synthetic and four natural types (two surface and two ground) of water. The adsorbents tested included magnetic ion exchange resins (MIEX), hydrous ion oxide particles (HIOPs), granular ferric hydroxide (GFH), activated alumina (AA), sulfur modified iron (SMI), and iron oxide-coated microsand (IOC-M), which have different physicochemical properties (shape, charge, surface area, size, and metal content). The results showed that adsorption equilibriums were achieved within a contact period of 20 min. The optimal doses of adsorbents determined for a given equilibrium concentration of $C_{eq}=10\;{\mu}g/L$ were 500 mg/L for AA and GFH, 520-1,300 mg/L for MIEX, 1,200 mg/L for HIOPs, 2,500 mg/L for SMI, and 7,500 mg/L for IOC-M at a contact time of 60 min. At these optimal doses, the rate constants of the adsorbents were 3.9, 2.6, 2.5, 1.9, 1.8, and 1.6 1/hr for HIOPs, AA, GFH, MIEX, SMI, and IOC-M, respectively. The presence of silicate significantly reduced the arsenic removal efficiency of HIOPs, AA, and GFH, presumably due to the decrease in chemical binding affinity of arsenic in the presence of silicate. Additional experiments with natural types of water showed that, with the exception of IOC-M, the adsorbents had lower adsorption capacities in ground water than with surface and deionized water, in which the adsorption capacities decreased by approximately 60-95%.

  • Reduction kinetics and intermediates behaviour of three high explosives (HMX, RDX, and TNT) were studies in batch reactors using either nano or micro size zero valent iron(ZVI) as reducing agent. The kinetics constants normalize to the mass of iron($k_M$) or to the surface area ($k_{SA}$) were measured and compared along with the changes of intermediate concentrations of each explosive. Results showed that $k_M$ and $k_{SA}$ values neither correlated each other nor explained the behaviour of intermediates of each high explosive in the batch reactor, in which initial intermediates decreased rapidly with nano ZVI treatment whereas the intermediates accumulated and stayed longer in the micro ZVI treated reactor.

  • Grinding has been adapted as a finishing process,which can carry out form and surface integrity at the same time. Recently, high efficient and precise grinding technique is required bacause the needs for functional parts such as silicon wafer,ceramic,and electric materials are increasing. Accordingly, the development of grinding wheel appropriate to that purpose is very important. So, in this paper we newly developed a diamond grinding wheel by applying the superior characteristics of spheroidal graphite of the cast iron sintered product. Especially, a electric resistance sintering method was applied in which rapid heat treatment is possible. Finally, we have achieved successful results that the grinding wheel has high hardness,durability and grinding ability,and satisfies above conditions.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate cutting characteristics and wear behavior in FCD500 ductile cast iron turning with different cutting tools, tungsten-carbide and CBN. Mechanical property, cutting characteristics and the application to the real industrial area is the final purpose. FDC500 ductile cast iron is now widely used in the various commercial vehicle parts for increased machine abilities which accrue more tensile strength with lower hardness. Several studies have been fulfilled for the material and heat-treatment area, but few with the cutting characteristics and wear behavior in the turning area.

Effect of trace amount of ferrous and ferric ions on the dissolution of iron plate in magnetically treated 3% sodium chloride solution

  • A 3% NaCl solution of 1 $dm^3$ circulated with 1.5 $dm^3/min$ by a pump for 24 h in the presence of magnetic field. An iron plate immersed in a $100cm^3$ of test solution for 24 h. The rest potential and pH on surface fixed after 3 h. Containing 0~120 ppm of Fe(II) ion, the dissolution in the magnetically treated solution rose comparing with that in the non-magnetically treated solution. The dissolution amount reached to maximum at 50 ppm, then fixed in the non-magnetically treated solution. When Fe(II) ion existed in the magnetically treated solution, dissolution accelerated a little. In the non-magnetic treated solution containing 10~125 ppm of Fe(III) ion existed, the dissolution accelerated. The dissolution amounts reached to maximum at 50 ppm, then decreased from maximum value. In the magnetically treated solution, the dissolution amounts reached to minimum until 50 ppm, then increased from minimum value. The dissolution amounts affected larger with increasing of magnetic flux density. Fe(II), Fe(III) ions and magnetic treatment affected to formation of $Fe(OH)_2$ and/or $Fe_3O_4$ films. The magnetically treated effects memorized about one month.

Effect of the Retained Austenite Content on the Wear Resistance of Austempered Ductile Iron (오스템퍼드 구상흑연주철의 마멸 특성에 미치는 잔류 오스테나이트 영향에 관한 연구)

  • Austempered ductile irons(ADI) are characterized by their relatively high retained austenite content which has a significant effect on mechanical properties and performance, such as ductility, toughness, wear resistance and machinability. Austenitising treatment at $900^{\circ}C$ for $1{\sim}2hours$, and austempering treatment within the temperature range $240{\sim}400^{\circ}C$ on ductile cast iron alloyed with Cu and Mo were carried out, and the effects of retained austenite content on the mechanical properties and wear resistance were investigated. In consequence, the amount of retained austenite was found to be 13.5% at the austempering temperature of $240^{\circ}C$, and was increased 28% at $400^{\circ}C$. Tensile strength and hardness of austempered ductile iron were decreased as the retained austenite content increased, but elongation was increased. The retained austenite content at the austenitising time of 2hours was more than at 1hour. The amounts of rolling wear loss were increased as the retained austenite content increased, and the wear surface was become to be rough.

Reduction of Nitrate-nigrogen by Zero-valent Iron Adhered in Mesoporous Silicas (메조기공 실리카에 부착된 영가철을 이용한 질산성 질소의 환원)

  • For environmental remediation of a contaminated groundwater plume, the use of zero-valent metal represents one of the latest innovative technologies. In this study, the effects of denitrification by zero-valent iron adsorbed in mesoporous silicas have been studied for groundwater contaminant degradation. The mesoporous silica was functionalized with 3-mercaptopropyltrimethoxysilane (MPTS) ligands and the zero-valent iron precipitated in the mesopore of granular silica was made by $FeCl_2$ and $NaBH_4$. Hydrogen was exchanged with $Fe^{2+}$ ions in the granular silicas. And then the ions were reduced by sodium borohydride in the mesoporous silicas. The surface area of the silica determined via the BET method ranged from 858 to $1275m^2/g$. The reductive reaction of nitrate-nitrogen indicated that the degradation of nitrate-nitrogen appeared to be pseudo first-order with the observed reaction rate constant kobs ($0.1619h^{-1}$) and to be directly proportional to the specific surface area. Therefore, the mesoporous silica with nano zero-valent iron proposed as a novel treatment strategy for contaminated groundwater was successfully implemented herein for the removal of nitrate-nitrogen.

Effect of Retained Austenite Content on the Wear Properties of Austempered C/V Graphite Iron (오스템퍼링 처리한 C/V 흑연 주철의 마모에 미치는 잔류 오스테나이트량의 영향에 관한 연구)

  • C/V graphite iron has superior tensile strength, toughness and ductility than grey iron, and better castability than ductile iron. The retained austenite content of C/V graphite iron by austempering treatment affects on the mechanical properties such as ductility, hardness, wear properties and machinability. C/V graphite iron alloyed with Cu and Mo were carried out on the austenitizing at $900^{\circ}C$ for 1 hour, and the austempering at $240{\sim}400^{\circ}C$ for 1 hr. And then the mechanical and wear properties of austempered C/V graphite iron have been investigated by the retained austenite content. In consequence, the retained austenite content was found to be 18.2% in austempering temperature at $240^{\circ}C$, and was increased 39.2% at $400^{\circ}C$. Tensile strength and hardness of austempered C/V graphite iron were decreased as the retained austenite content increased, but elongation was increased. The rolling wear loss were increased as the retained austenite content increased. The wear surface of as-cast became to be rough. The microstructure of austempered C/V graphite iron was became to be acicular ausferrite in austempering at $240^{\circ}C$, and feathery ausferrite at $400^{\circ}C$.
