  • The problem of interaction of surface water waves by small undulation at the bottom of a laterally unbounded sea is treated on the basis of linear water wave theory for both normal and oblique incidences. Perturbation analysis is employed to obtain the first order corrections to the reflection and transmission coefficients in terms of integrals involving the shape function c(x) representing the bottom undulation. Fourier transform method and residue theorem are applied to obtain these coefficients. As an example, a patch of sinusoidal ripples is considered in both the cases as the shape function. The principal conclusion is that the reflection coefficient is oscillatory in the ratio of twice the surface wave number to the wave number of the ripples. In particular, there is a Bragg resonance between the surface waves and the ripples, which is associated with high reflection of incident wave energy. The theoretical observations are validated computationally.

  • The design of SPMSM(surface mounted permanent magnet synchronous motor) has been performed to reduce cogging torque and torque ripples. In general, cogging torque and torque ripples are affected by the shapes of teeth width, yoke depth, magnet pole arc, etc. Particularly, the minimum design point of cogging torque and torque ripples are different so that the design of SPMSM should be done to compromise both of them for precision application. In this paper, the design of PMSM for EPS(electric power steering) system is performed to verify the validity, and the design characteristics versus teeth width, yoke depth, and magnet pole arc are investigated in order to find out the minimum point of cogging torque and torque ripples. In addition, skew of PM is applied for cogging torque reduction.

  • Atomically-thin 2D nanomaterials can be easily deformed and have surface corrugations which can influence the frictional characteristics of the 2D nanomaterials. Chemical vapor deposition (CVD) graphene can be grown in a wafer scale, which is suitable as a large-area surface coating film. The CVD growth involves cooling process to room temperature, and the thermal expansion coefficients mismatch between graphene and the metallic substrate induces a compressive strain in graphene, resulting in the surface corrugations such as wrinkles and atomic ripples. Such corrugations can induce the friction anisotropy of graphene, and therefore, accurate imaging of the surface corrugation is significant for better understanding about the friction anisotropy of CVD graphene. In this work, the combinatorial analysis using friction force microscopy (FFM) and transverse shear microscopy (TSM) was implemented to unveil the friction anisotropy of CVD bi-layer graphene. The periodic friction anisotropy of the wrinkles was measured following a sinusoidal curve depending on the angles between the wrinkles and the scanning tip, and the two domains were observed to have the different friction signals due to the different directions of the atomic ripples, which was confirmed by the high-resolution FFM and TSM imaging. In addition, we revealed that the atomic ripples can be easily suppressed by ironing the surface during AFM scans with an appropriate normal force. This work demonstrates that the friction anisotropy of CVD bilayer graphene is well-correlated with the corrugated structures and the local friction anisotropy induced by the atomic ripples can be controllably removed by simple AFM scans.

  • An optical method for surface roughness estimation based on statistical analysis of the light intensity of a scattered laser beam pattern. The method is very simple but has a disadvantage that no more information than the averaged roughness is estimated. In this study a new try was conducted to derive more advanced surface information from the details of the light intensity distribution. Some periodic ripples among the light intensity distribution being assumed to relate with scratch left on the machined surface, a corresponding surface profile is estimated from the ripples using FFT and IFFT algorithm. IFFT technique is used to extract some dominant signal components among the intensity distribution. Compared to the measured profiles by a stylus type surf-tester, the profiles obtained through the proposed method are probably acceptable in a sense of the profile shape. Calibration of the amplitude needs more works in the future.

  • Electric power steering(EPS) has many attentions such as fuel consumption improvement, thus it has been widely adopted for automotive application in recent years. In the EPS system, torque vibrations are directly transferred through the steering wheel to the hands of the driver. Hence, the design of PM motors for the EPS should be performed in order to reduce torque ripples including cogging torque. In this paper, Surface mounted Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor(SPMSM) is designed to reduce torque ripples and cogging torque at a same time for the EPS propulsion and the design results are verified with the experimental ones.

  • This paper deals with torque harmonic characteristics and its reduction design of induction motors for electric vehicle (EV) propulsion. For calculating the stator harmonic flux of squirrel-cage induction motor, the numerical methods have been employed on the structural configuration design of stator and rotor teeth. In particular, torque ripples including spatial harmonics are obtained by Finite Element Method (FEM), and their individual harmonic components are identified with Fast Fourier Transform (FFT). In this paper, design modification on the teeth surface gives rise to the significant reduction of torque ripples including spatial torque harmonics, which have been obtained with FEM.

  • The multi-degrees of freedom surface permanent-magnet motor (Multi-D.O.F. SPM) has several degrees of freedom operations that are defined as the "roll", "yaw", and "pitch". Normally, the torque that is generated to rotate a rotor includes ripples. The analysis of the torque ripples is important for improving motor performance. In terms of the electric analysis, torque ripple occurs as a result of many factors, including the rotor and stator structures, the distribution of the air-gap flux density, and the waveform of the current in the coils. In particular, the torque ripple is an important factor in the stable operation of the Multi-D.O.F. SPM. Therefore, in this work, the torque ripple was analyzed using various types of magnetization for the permanent magnet. An improved model was proposed for the Multi-D.O.F. SPM based on this analysis.

  • The paper reports an improvement method on torque ripples of multi-pole interior permanent magnet synchronous motor (IPMSM) applied to a traction motor for hybrid electric vehicles. In the case of multi-pole IPMSM, the magnetic flux generated by a permanent magnet tends to leak through the bridge of the rotor without a link with stator windings. The slit design on the rotor surface was proposed to reduce torque rippling and increase the output power by reducing the leakage flux. Two design parameters for the slit are suggested for optimal design using the response surface method. As an analysis method, the 2D finite element method (FEM) was applied to consider magnetic saturation effect.

We also examine the influence of freewheeling diodes and DC link voltage ripple on the performance of the SRM such as torque ripples and radial force on the surface of the teeth. The freewheeling diodes and DC link voltage ripples must be taken into account to predict the performance of SRM.
