A probabilistic seismic damage analysis is an essential procedure to identify seismically vulnerable structures, prioritize the seismic retrofit, and ultimately minimize the overall seismic risk. To assess the seismic risk of multiple structures within a region, a large number of nonlinear time-history structural analyses must be conducted and studied. As a result, each assessment requires high computing resources. To overcome this limitation, we explore a deep learning-based metamodel to enable the prediction of the mean and the standard deviation of the seismic damage distribution of track-on steel-plate girder railway bridges in Korea considering the geometric variation. For machine learning training, nonlinear dynamic time-history analyses are performed to generate 800 high-fidelity datasets on the seismic response. Through intensive trial and error, the study is concentrated on developing an optimal machine learning architecture with the pre-identified variables of the physical configuration of the bridge. Additionally, the prediction performance of the proposed method is compared with a previous, well-defined, response surface model. Finally, the statistical testing results indicate that the overall performance of the deep-learning model is improved compared to the response surface model, as its errors are reduced by as much as 61%. In conclusion, the model proposed in this study can be effectively deployed for the seismic fragility and risk assessment of a region with a large number of structures.

In this study, the method of designing the flexible wing model which will be used for wind tunnel testing of gust response alleviation system was presented. The design concept proposed herein was validated by performing the modal testing of the flexible wing model manufactured for demonstration purpose. In addition, the study on the gust response alleviation using flexible wing control surface was performed. For this purpose, optimal control with output feedback was adopted for designing the control surface controller, and the effects of gust response alleviation was validated by performing the numerical simulation for the representative flexible wing model. The methods proposed and validated in this study can be applied for wind tunnel testing of the flexible wing for gust response alleviation.
In current paper, nonlocal (NLT), nonlocal strain gradient (NSGT) and Gurtin-Murdoch surface/interface (GMSIT) theories with classical theory (CT) are utilized to investigate vibration and stability analysis of Double Walled Piezoelectric Nanosensor (DWPENS) based on cylindrical nanoshell. DWPENS simultaneously subjected to direct electrostatic voltage DC and harmonic excitations, structural damping, two piezoelectric layers and also nonlinear van der Waals force. For this purpose, Hamilton's principle, Galerkin technique, complex averaging and with arc-length continuation methods are used to analyze nonlinear behavior of DWPENS. For this work, three nonclassical theories compared with classical theory CT to investigate Dimensionless Natural Frequency (DNF), pull-in voltage, nonlinear frequency response and stability analysis of the DWPENS considering the nonlocal, material length scale, surface/interface (S/I) effects, electrostatic and harmonic excitation.
Liquid sloshing displays the highly nonlinear free surface fluctuation when either the external excitation is of large amplitude or its frequency approaches natural sloshing frequencies. Naturally, the accurate tracking of time-varying free surface configuration becomes a key task for the reliable prediction of the sloshing time-history response. However, the numerical instability and dissipation may occur in the nonlinear sloshing analysis, particularly in the long-time beating simulation, when two simulation parameters, the relative time-increment parameter a and the fluid mesh pattern, are not elaborately chosen. This paper intends to examine the effects of these two parameters on the potential-based nonlinear finite element method introduced for the large amplitude sloshing flow.

In tunnel excavation by blast beneath the surface structures in urban area, the characteristics of ground vibration induced by blast and its influence on surface structures are analyzed by the field test and the numerical analysis on dynamic behaviors of the structure. According to the field test on the propagating characteristics of blast vibration through the rock mass and the concrete foundation pile. the attenuation index of peak particle velocity with distance shows the range of 1.7∼2.0 for the rock mass and the range of 2.0∼2.3 for the concrete pile. This shows that the blast vibration reduces more rapidly in the concrete pile. It is known from the numerical analysis on dynamic behavior of the structure that the coefficient of response, velocity ratio of structure response to input wave, is different according to the story of the structure. It can be said from this research that the characteristics of the ground vibration and the dynamic behavior of the structure should be well evaluated and be considered as important factors for safe blasting design especially in underground excavation at shallow depth in urban area.
During earthquake, the motion of ground is affected significantly by source characteristics, source-to-site path properties and local site conditions. Due to the influence of local soil conditions different places experience distinctive amplitude of surface ground motion. Ground response analysis of a specific site utilizing the borehole information at different locations is done in present study. The ground motion with the highest peak ground acceleration for this site obtained from the ground response analysis is used in finite element soil-structure interaction analysis of multi-storey shear wall buildings with various positions of shear walls. The variation in seismic response of buildings and advantageous position of shear wall are determined. The study reveals that providing shear wall at the core of buildings at the specific site is advantageous among all shear wall configurations considered.

The combustion instability analysis of solid propellants is generally done by the simplified governing equations for chemically inert condensed phase region with QSHOD assumption. Since the gas phase and surface reaction layer can be more rapidly relaxed to the external perturbations than the condensed phase, these regions are treated as quasi-steady manner in the analysis. In this paper, the classical ZN(Zeldovic-Novozhilov)approach was re-examined with the presence of radiation augmented burning enhancement in the combustion. Also, the surface reaction was assumed to partially absorb the incident radiant heat fluxes and pass the remaining to the chemically inert condensed phase. As a result of the analysis, the burning rate response function was obtained which consists of a pressure response function and a radiation response function. The response function was shown to be able to predict the results of T-burner tests.
Response surface methodology (RSM) is one of popular tools to support a systematic improvement of quality of design in the product and process development stages. It consists of statistical modeling and optimization tools. RSM can be viewed as a knowledge management tool in that it systemizes knowledge about a manufacturing process through a big data analysis on products and processes. The conventional RSM aims to optimize the mean of a response, whereas dual-response surface optimization (DRSO), a special case of RSM, considers not only the mean of a response but also its variability or standard deviation for optimization. Recently, a posterior preference articulation approach receives attention in the DRSO literature. The posterior approach first seeks all (or most) of the nondominated solutions with no articulation of a decision maker (DM)'s preference. The DM then selects the best one from the set of nondominated solutions a posteriori. This method has a strength that the DM can understand the trade-off between the mean and standard deviation well by looking around the nondominated solutions. A posterior method has been proposed for DRSO. It employs an interval selection strategy for the selection step. This strategy has a limitation increasing inefficiency and complexity due to too many iterations when handling a great number (e.g., thousands ~ tens of thousands) of nondominated solutions. In this paper, a TOPSIS-based method is proposed to support a simple and efficient selection of the most preferred solution. The proposed method is illustrated through a typical DRSO problem and compared with the existing posterior method.
A numerical procedure for optimizing the shape of three-dimensional channel with V-shaped ribs extruded on both walls has been carried out to enhance the turbulent heat transfer. The response surface based optimization is used as an optimization technique with Reynolds-averaged Wavier-stoked analysis. Shear stress transport (SST) turbulence model is used as a turbulence closure. Computational results for average heat transfer rate show good agreements with experimental data. The objective function is defined as a linear combination of heat transfer and friction loss-related terms with a weighting factor. Three dimensionless variables such as, rib pitch-to-rib height ratio, rib height-to-channel height ratio, and the attack angle of the rib are chosen as design variables. Nineteen training points obtained by D-optimal designs for three design variables construct a reliable response surface. In the sensitivity analysis, it is found that the objective function is most sensitive to the ratio of rib height-to-channel height ratio. And, optimal values of design variables have been obtained in a range of the weighting factor.

This paper presents the shape optimization process for the automotive wheel bearing seal lip using the finite element method and the response surface method. First, to predict performance of the bearing seal lip, we used the non-linear finite element analysis. And then, we compared the analysis results with the test results to verify the finite element model. The objective function in optimizing process was obtained from results of the mud slurry test, which is one of many tests for evaluating performance of wheel bearing. After the mud slurry test for the four models which have the similar cross-sectional shape, we measured the wear area of the seal lip and the moisture content in grease. The objective function has been chosen by comparing the results of mud slurry test and characteristics of seal lip, such as contact force, contact area, contact pressure, and interference. Finally, within limited design parameters, we suggested the optimized shape of seal lip, which is expected to improve the wear and the sealing effect of it.
