  • In this study, the topics for free-surface wave simulation, nonlinear hydrodynamic force, and the critical resonance frequency of so-called ${\tau}=U{\omega}/g$=1/4 are discussed. A high-order spectral/boundary element method is newly adapted as an efficient numerical tool. This method is one of the most efficient numerical methods by which the nonlinear gravity waves can be simulated and hydrodynamic forces also can be calculated in time domain. In this method, the velocity potential is expressed as the sum of surface potential and body potential. Then, surface potential is solved by using the high-order spectral method and body potential is solved by using the high-order boundary element method. By the combination of these two methods, the wave-making problems by a submerged sphere oscillating with forward speed under the free-surface are solved in time domain.

  • Silicon carbide (SiC) is an attractive material for high-power, high-temperature, and high-frequency applications. So far, atomic force microscopy (AFM) has been extensively used to study the surface charges, dielectric constants and electrical potential distribution as well as topography in silicon-based device structures, whereas it has rarely been applied to SiC-based structures. In this work, the surface potential and topography distributions SiC with different doping levels were measured at a nanometer-scale resolution using a scanning kelvin probe force microscopy (SKPM) with a non-contact mode AFM. The measured results were calibrated using a Pt-coated tip and a metal defined electrical contacts of Au onto SiC. It is assumed that the atomically resolved surface potential difference does not originate from the intrinsic work function of the materials but reflects the local electron density on the surface. It was found that the work function of the Au deposited on SiC surface was higher than that of original SiC surface. The dependence of the surface potential on the doping levels in SiC, as well as the variation of surface potential with respect to the schottky barrier height has been investigated. The results confirm the concept of the work function and the barrier heights of metal/SiC structures.

  • This article involves a unified treatment of equilibrium thermodynamics of the chemical reaction coupled with other interfacial (phase boundary) reactions. The modified (restrictive) chemical potential ${\mu}_k^+$, such as electrochemical potential, hydrostatic-chemical (mechanochemical) potential (exceptionally in the presence of the pressure difference) and surface-chemical potential, was first introduced under the isothermal and isobaric conditions. This article then enlightened the equilibrium conditions in case where the release of chemical energy is counterbalanced by the supply of electrical energy, by the supply of hydrostatic work (exceptionally in the presence of ${\Delta}p$), and finally by the release of surface energy, respectively, at constant temperature T and pressure p in terms of the modified chemical potential ${\mu}_k^+$. Finally, this paper focussed on the difference between chemical and electrochemical equilibria based upon the fundamentals of the isothermal and isobaric equilibrium conditions described above.

  • The corrosion of pure titanium (CP- Ti Grade 2) and titanium alloy (Ti6Al4V ELI) were studied under various conditions of simulated body fluids. The static immersion test and the electrochemical test were performed in accordance with ISO 10271 : 2001. For the electrochemical test, the open circuit potential was monitored as a function of time, and the cyclic polarization curve was recorded. The corrosion resistance was evaluated from the values of corrosion potential, passivation current density, breakdown potential, and the shape of hysteresis etc. The effects of alloy type, surface condition, temperature, oxygen, and constituents in the fluids such as acid, chloride were estimated. Both specimens had extremely low dissolution rate in the static immersion test. They showed strong passivation characteristics in the electrochemical test. They maintained negligible current density throughout the wide anodic potential range. The passive layer was not broken up to 2.0 V (vs. SCE). The hysteresis and the shift of passivation potential toward the anodic direction was observed during the reversed scan. The passivation process appeared to be accelerated by oxygen in air or that dissolved in the fluids. The passivation also proceeded without oxygen by the reaction of constituents in the fluids. Acid or chloride in the fluids, specially later weakened the passive layer, and then induced higher passivation current density and less shift of passivation potential in the reversed scan. CP-Ti Grade 2 was more reactive than Ti6Al4V ELI in the fluids containing acid or chloride, but thicker layer produced on its surface provided higher corrosion resistance.

  • Cathodic protection is being widely used to protect steel structures in sea water environment, In order to protect steel structures completely, the flow condition of sea water surrounding with this structures and the surface condition of the structures must be considered for a desirable design of cathodic protection. In this study, the optimum protection potential and current density were investigated in terms of cathodic current density, surface condition and a flow condition of sea water. The optium protection potential of the cleaned specimen was -770 mV(SCE) and below. However in the case of the rusted specimen, its potential was -700 mV(SCE) and below, which was somewhat positive than the cleaned one irrespective of flow condition. The optimum cathodic protection current density for both the cleaned and rusted specimens was 100 mA/$\textrm{m}^2$, however, on the flow condition, 200 mA/$\textrm{m}^2$ to be supplied for cathodic protection of steel structures completely for both cleaned and rusted specimens.

  • Generally, investigation methods of cut slope are conducted only geological surface survey to gain engineering geological data of cut slopes. These methods have many problems such as limitations of investigation for a special area. So geophysical investigations such as geotomography, seismic and electrical resistivity methods have been used to search for failure surface in potential failure slopes or failed slopes. But investigation method using the borehole camera is recently a used method and it is thought that this method is more reliable method than other investigation methods because of being able to see by the eyes. Therefore, this paper was conducted investigations of borings and BIPS(Borehole Image Processing System) to search for potential sliding surfaces and was applied to obtain information of discontinuity on failed and potential failure slope in highway. As the results of BIPS, we could decide potential sliding surface in the slope, conducted to check slope stability and decided slope stability measures.

  • In micro electrochemical machining (ECM), electrodes should be prevented from unfavorable oxide and Passive layer formation on the machined surface or overall corrosion of the entire surface. Generally, metal electrodes corrode, passivate or dissolve in the electrochemical cell according to the electrode potential. Therefore, each electrode must maintain its stable potential. Tn this paper, the stable electrode potentials of tool and workpiece were determined using the potentiodynamic polarization test and verified experimentally considering machining stability and surface quality. Stable workpiece electrode potentials of two different passive materials of 304 stainless steel and nickel were determined in the 0.1 M sulfuric acid. Experimental results show good machined surface and fast machining rate using the determined electrode potentials.

  • Humidity sensors using $TiO_2$ thin films were fabricated on the multi-electrode device by Sol-Gel method and their wettability, surface potential decays and humidity sensing characteristics were investigated. Contact angle of thin films was $28^{\cic}\;at\; 400^{\circ}C$ and surface potential decayed rapidly at $400^{\circ}C$. The specimen showed best humidity sensing characteristics at $400^{\circ}C$. From the results, they were confirmed that humidity sensing characteristics of thin films have connection with contact angle and surface potential decays.

  • This paper deals with the change of surface Potential decay, surface resistivity, contact an91e and XPS of ultraviolet-treated PET films. From the experimental results on the surface Potential decay of UV degraded-samples, it was found that the accumulation of charge is decreased and the surface potential decay time is shortened. Also, from the result of XPS, it was found that the changes affected by the surface degradation of PET film were caused by the generation of carboxyl groups through the chain decomposition and recombination with oxygen molecules in the air.

  • Aiming at nondestructive evaluation of defect with high accuracy and resolution, ICFPD(Induced Current Focusing Potential Drop) technique was newly developed. This technique can be applied for locating and sizing of defects in components with not only simple shape such as plain surface but also more complex shape and geometry such as curved surface and dissimilar joing. This paper describes the principle of ICFPD technique and also the results of 2-dimensional surface crack in ferromagnetic metal(A508 Cl. III steel) and paramagnetic metal (pure aluminum and stainless 304 steel) measured by this technique. Results are that surface defects in each specimen are detected with the difference of potential drop, and potential drops are distributed a similar shape for each metal and each depth. The normalized potential drop ( $V_{\delta}$2/$^{t}$ / $V_{{\delta} 2}$$^{-1}$) max. in the vicinity of defect is varied with the depth of defect. Therefore, ICFPD technique can be used for the evaluation of defect not only in ferromagnetic metal but also in paramagnetic steel..
