  • Particulate matter (PM) is an air pollutant that causes serious environmental problems in Korea and other countries. The annual average PM10 concentration in Korea is around 40 ㎛/㎥, which is more than twice as high as the WHO recommended standard. When consumed with food, fine PM can pose a risk to humans. However, the risk of fine PM has been focused on the risk of fine PM introduced through the respiratory system. We investigated the quantitative measuring methods of PM10 on food surface to identify possible risk analysis of fine PM. The surfaces of food with artificially contaminated PM10 were observed with a scanning electron microscope(SEM). An automatic object-based image analysis was used to analyze the amount and size distribution of particulate matter contained in SEM micrographs.

  • Electrodeposition technology is widely used in industry for various kinds of coatings. Modifications in this technology led to several processes to meet various requirements. Electrolysis in ionic liquids has many advantages such as low energy consumption of energy, low pollutant emission and low operating costs. Although ionic liquids have already been used in liquid/liquid extraction processes, only recently their use in electrodeposition was exploited. Electrochemical deposition of composites is an expanding area. Coupled with the progress in the synthesis of nanometric powder, this research will open a large number of innovative materials. Pulse current plating is another electrodeposition technique which yields improved coatings. Although electrodeposition is now regarded as an environmental non-friendly process, it is economically viable and has many inherent advantages. For certain applications, alternatives to electrodeposition have not yet been fully implemented. Hence, continued research in this technology is warranted. This article reviews some recent advances in electrodeposition technology. Aspects of electrodeposition such as electrolysis in ionic liquids, electrodeposition of composites, pulse current plating techniques, metal and alloy deposition, compound deposition and effects of additives are discussed in this review.

  • Exposed on the sea, the oils are affected by the combined effects of evaporation, solution, chemical oxidation, and biological decomposition. Therefore the samples were taken after artificial weathering, and they were analyzed by gas chromatography for sulfur and hydrocarbons. The measurement results of gas chromatography have shown characteristic patterns. The peaks of the lower hydrocarbons in pollutant oil decreased with time. But the chromatograms for sulfur compound analysed by FPD showed little changes with lapse of time. The hydrocarbon and sulfur compound analysis by gas chromatography can be effectively used for analyzing oils for comparative identification.

  • A depot encircled with contact oxidation canal has been developed to improve water qualityr. The depot is aimed to settle suspended solid in the flow. The oxidation canal is to contact the pollutants and oxygen in the surface of gravel filter to purify the water. The deposit of the pollutant in the depot is released by the drainage culvert located at the bottom of it. Aeration nozzle is installed to supply enough oxygen to the gravel filter layers in the bottom of the detent the flow and improve oxidation efficiency. From the experiment it is founded that 91% of SS, 39% of TN, 63% of TP and 77% of COD were removed in the system. The treatment efficiency of total nitrogen is rather lower than any other components, however, it would be higher when some floating vegetation is added in the primary clarifier. The depot and oxidation canal system would be useful to purify the flows in the mouth of the reservoirs or at the outlet of the drainage canal.

  • Natural organic matter (NOM) is among the most common pollutant in underground and surface waters. It comprises of humic substances which contains anionic macromolecules such as aliphatic and aromatic compounds of a wide range of molecular weights along with carboxylic, phenolic functional groups. Although the concentration of NOM in potable water usually lies in the range of 1-10 ppm. Conventional treatment technologies are facing challenge in removing NOM effectively. The main issues are concentrated to low efficiency, membrane fouling, and harmful by-product formation. Ion-exchangers can be considered as an efficient and economic pretreatment technology for the removal of NOM. It not only consumes less time for pretreatment but also resist formation of trihalomethanes (THMs), an unwanted harmful by-product. This article provides a comprehensive review of ion exchange processes for the removal of NOM.

  • A Thermal Internal Boundary Layer(TIBL) develops over the landside from the coast due to the surface temperature difference between the land the sea when sea breeze froms. The TIBL plays an important role in determining the pollutant concentrations where the plume emitted from a tall stack near the coast fumigates to the ground. The fumigation results in the high ground the TIBL height from the available meterological data is very important. The TIBL models avaliable in the literature were analyzed to identify the suitable model to apply in the fumigation. The TIBL heights predicted by the existing models were compared with the measurements in the water tank experiment. The results show that the TIBL models by Raynor is appropriate to predict the height of TIBL.

  • This research was carried out to evaluate feasibility of using an Electrokinetic-Fenton(EK-Fenton) technique to treat hydrophobic organic pollutant(phenanthrene) from soils. Experiment examined the effect by introducing a continuous flow of a 3.5% hydrogen peroxide solution at the anode. An electric gradient of 1V/cm was applied to enhance the saturated flow in the soil cell for a period of 11 days. After 11 days or 1 pore volume, overall concentration of residual phenanthrene in the soil cell was 11% and residual phenanathrene concentration in the soil was found to increase with toward the cathode. This results indicated that Fenton-like reaction catalyzed by mineral surface was effective in oxidizing phenanthrene. This results also showed that hydrogen peroxide was effectively transported into the soil by electroosmotic flow as well as by diffusion.

  • A new type of nonthermal plasma reactor utilizing ferroelectric pellets is proposed to generate nonthermal plasma efficiently, which is used for simultaneous control of various pollutant gases. Electric charges stored on ferroelctric pellets by corona discharge between a corona tip and a mesh electrode provide partial electrical discharges among ferroelectric pellets. These partial electrical discharges can enhance partial discharges around the surface of ferroelectric pellets. This method utilizes wide reacting area of ferroelectric pellets and partial discharge. Positive and negative dc voltage are applied to the corona tip to generate partial discharges, and corona currents are estimated to investigate charge storage on ferroelectric pellets as function of time and charge relaxation time constants of ferroelectric pellects. As a result, charge relaxationtime, dielectric constants of ferroelectric pellets, polarity of applied voltage and applied time influence partial discharges among ferroelectric pellect.

  • A quantitative study of the amount of air transported between the boundary layer and the free atmosphere is important for understanding air quality and upper tropospheric ozone, which is a greenhouse gas. Frontal systems are known to be an effective mechanism for the vertical transport of pollutants. Numerical experiments have been performed with a simple two-dimensional front model to simulate vertical transport of trace gases within developing cold fronts. Three different trace gases experiments have been done numerically according to the different initial fields of trace gases such as aerosol, ozone and $H_2O_2$. Trace gas field tilts to the east while the front tilts to the west. Aerosol simulation shows that pollutants can be transported out of the boundary to altitudes of about 10 km. The stratospheric ozone is brought downwards in a tropopause fold behind of the frontal surface. The meridional gradient in trace gas ($H_2O_2$) can cause a complicate structure in the trace field by the meridional advection.
