  • Co-22 %Cr alloy films are promising for high-density perpendicular magnetic recording media with their perpendicular anisotropy and large coercivity of 3000 Oe. We observed that a self organized nano structure (SONS) of fine ferromagnetic Co-enriched phase and paramagnetic Cr-enriched phase appears inside the grain of Co-Cr magnetic alloy thin films at the elevated substrate temperature after do-sputtering. The periodic fine Co-enriched phase and Cr-enriched phase is the plate shape of 80 (equation omitted)-wide and 1000 (equation omitted)-long. Cr-enriched phases are located at the center of grains. We prepared 5000 (equation omitted) -thick Co-22 %Cr films on polyimide substrate with varying substrate temperature of $ 30^{\circ}C$, $ 150^{\circ}C$ ,200 $^{\circ}C$, $300^{\circ}C$, and $400^{\circ}C$, respectively. A transmission electron microscope equipped with energy dispersive X-ray analyzer is employed to observe the microstructure of each samples after Co-enri-ched phase are etched selectively. The self organized nano structure of Co-enriched and Cr-enriched lamellar is observed above the substrate temperture of $150^{\circ}C$. No compositional change is observed with substrate temperature. The compositional phase separation in self organized structure becomes clear as the substrate temperature increases. Our results implies that the self organized nano structure in Co-22 %Cr film is ideal for ultra high density recording media by recording selectively on Co-enri-ohed phase.

  • Behaviors of $TiO_2$-based photocatalysts with different surface structures on the removal of gas-phase toluene with and without UV irradiation are reported. P-25(Degussa) $TiO_2$ powder dispersed in distilled water by sonication was deposited on the transparent glasses and then dried. Some of the samples were further annealed in oven for 1 hr. These samples obtained before and after annealing were characterized by Brunauer- Emmett-Teller (BET), Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM), X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) and Fourier Transform Infrared (FT-IR) spectrometry, respectively. Based on BET and TEM data, no significant structural change upon annealing could be identified. However, the sample without annealing showed a significantly higher ability for removing toluene both in the presence and absence of the UV light. XPS and FT-IR results clearly revealed that the population of the OH groups on the surface of $TiO_2$ was higher for the sample without annealing, indicating that the OH groups can enhance the adsorption capacity and photocatalytic activity of $TiO_2$ for the removal of the gas-phase toluene.

  • Recent studies son surface coatings have shown that the change of physical, chemical and crystallographic structure analysed and observed according to the deposition process variables has the effects on the resultant film properties. Under the same preparation condition conditions of the substrate and process variables, physical morphology variations characterized by substrate temperature and bias which offect the surface mobility of adatom and adhesion variations related to the formation of Ti interlayer were considered in the present study. Microhardness showed the highest value around 40$0^{\circ}C$ of the substrate temperature and increased with the substrate bias. Adhesion was improved with the increase of substrate temperature and bias. An interlayer of pure titanium formed prior to deposition of TiN improves the adhesion at its optimum thickness. These results were explained by the change of physical morphology and phase analysis.

  • Electrons and phonons in chalcogenide-based materials play are important factors in the performance of an optical data storage media and thermoelectric devices. However, the fundamental kinetics of carriers in chalcogenide materials remains controversial, and active debate continues over the mechanism responsible for carrier relaxation. In this study, we investigated ultrafast carrier dynamics in an multilayered $\{Sb(3{\AA})/Te(9{\AA})\}n$ thin film during the transition from the amorphous to the crystalline phase using optical pump terahertz probe spectroscopy (OPTP), which permits the relationship between structural phase transition and optical property transitions to be examined. Using THz-TDS, we demonstrated that optical conductance and carrier concentration change as a function of annealing temperature with a contact-free optical technique. Moreover, we observed that the topological surface state (TSS) affects the degree of enhancement of carrier lifetime, which is closely related to the degree of spin-orbit coupling (SOC). The combination of an optical technique and a proposed carrier relaxation mechanism provides a powerful tool for monitoring TSS and SOC. Consequently, the response of the amorphous phase is dominated by an electron-phonon coupling effect, while that of the crystalline structure is controlled by a Dirac surface state and SOC effects. These results are important for understanding the fundamental physics of phase change materials and for optimizing and designing materials with better performance in optoelectronic devices.

  • Thermal stability of $Ge_2Sb_2Te_5$ (GST) and $SiO_2$ doped GST (SGST) films for phase change random access memory applications was investigated by observing the change of surface roughness, layer density and composition of both films after isothermal annealing. After both GST and SGST films were annealed at $325^{\circ}C$ for 20 min, root mean square (RMS) surface roughness of GST was increased from 1.9 to 35.9 nm but that of SGST was almost unchanged. Layer density of GST also steeply decreased from 72.48 to 68.98 $g/cm^2$ and composition was largely varied from Ge : Sb : Te = 22.3 : 22.1 : 55.6 to 24.2 : 22.7 : 53.1, while those of SGST were almost unchanged. It was confirmed that the addition of a small amount of $SiO_2$ into GST film restricted the deterioration of physical and chemical properties of GST film, resulting in the better thermal stability after isothermal annealing.

  • Numerical simulations based on the ALE finite element method are carried out to examine the aerodynamics of an oscillating circular cylinder when the separated shear flows around the cylinder are stimulated by periodic jet excitation with a shear layer instability frequency. The excitation is applied to the flows from two points on the cylinder surface. The numerical results showed that the excitation with a shear layer instability frequency can reduce the negative damping and thereby stabilize the aerodynamics of the oscillating cylinder. The change of the lift phase seems important in stabilizing the cylinder aerodynamics. The change of lift phase is caused by the merger of the vortices induced by the periodic excitation with a shear layer instability frequency, and the vortex merging comes from the high growth rate, the rapid increase of wave number and decrease of phase velocity for the periodic excitation in the separated shear flows.

  • $AB_2$ type Zr-based Laves phase alloys have been studied for potential application as negative electrode in Ni/MH batteries. However, They have a serious disadvantage of poor activation behavior in KOH solution. In this work, a new method of alloy design method was tried for improving Zr-based alloy activation. this method has focused on phase controlling to make multi-phase microstructure. In the case of multi-phase Zr-V-Mn-Ni shows good performance in activation, but activation mechanism has not been known. So, we were in search of elucidating this mechanism, Using morphological and electrochemical analysis, we could find that surface morphology and electocatalytic activity of the alloy change during immersion in KOH solution. V-rich second phases are selectively corroded and dissolved and then become Ni-rich phases. Resulting from these surface reaction in KOH solution, self-hydrogen charging occurs through Ni-rich phase. However, the alloy has poor cyclic durability because of such a corrosion mechanism. Therefore, finally we developed durable alloys by substitution of other alloying element.

  • This study investigated variation leakage current maximum value and waveform considering applied voltage phase angel by simulating three environmental conditions, such as fog, salt fog, and kaolin contamination .As the result of applied voltage phase angel characteristics, leakage currents presented almost in phases in the early stage regardless of environmental conditions just after applying the voltage, and the phase of leakage currents certain phase lags for the discharge of the applied voltage when surface discharges occurred due to the continuous environmental contamination. In addition, the difference in phase significantly increased according to the intensity of discharges. The change in distortion rates according to the environmental contamination presented a nearly same level just after applying the voltage. The distortion rate of third harmonic for the fundamental wave presented by the order of fog>salt fog>kaolin when surface discharges occurred due to the applied voltage for certain continued periods. In the case of the fog and salt fog, the scale of spectrums decreased according to the increase in frequencies from the results of the analysis of high frequencies. In addition, the even number frequency presented a relatively large level compared to the odd number frequency under the kaolin contamination.

  • UV-induced graft polymerization of glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) to a polypropylene (PP) membrane was carried out in the vapor phase with benzophenone (BP) as a photoinitiator. Attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy (AFM), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were utilized to characterize the copolymer. The degree of grafting increased with increasing reaction time, increased UV irradiation source intensity, and increased immersion concentration of the BP solution. The optimum synthetic condition for the PP-g-GMA membrane was obtained with a reaction time of 2 hrs, a UV irradiation source intensity of 450 W, and an immersion concentration of the BP solution of 0.5 mol/L. The pure water flux decreased upon increasing the degree of grafting and increasing the amount of diethylamino functional group introduced. The analysis of AFM and SEM images shows that the graft chains and diethylamino groups of PP-g-GMA grew on the PP membrane surface, resulting in a change in surface morphology.

  • We report on hysteresis behavior in the electrical resistance-hydrogen concentration of Pd thin films. The variation of the electrical resistance has been investigated during the process of absorption and desorption of hydrogen gas ($H_{2}$) as a function of thickness of Pd thin films. The hysteresis behavior in the electrical resistance with $H_{2}$ concentration was found for Pd thin films and consists of $\alpha$ phase, ${\alpha}+{\beta}$ phase, and $\beta$ phase regions. The sensitivity of Pd thin films with $H_{2}$ concentration was found to follow Sieverts' law in the $\alpha$ phase region. However, the sensitivity was observed to increase abruptly with $H_{2}$ concentration in the ${\alpha}+{\beta}$ phase co-exist region. This is because Pd-H interaction is stronger in the $\beta$ phase than in the $\alpha$ phase and needs a higher concentration gradient as a driving force to desorb. The formation of the $\beta$ phase also was observed to cause the structural change because of the lattice expansion during absorption. The hysteresis height and the trace of structural change were affected by the thickness of the Pd film. As the film becomes thinner, the hysteresis height becomes lower and the amount of delamination on the surface becomes smaller. For films thinner than 20 nm in thickness, the delamination was not found but electrical resistance hysteresis was still observed.
