  • This paper describes the development of a powertrain for a 20 kW experimental electric vehicle using a surface-mounted permanent magnet synchronous motor (SPMSM) and its application to a test vehicle. Two 10 kW SPMSMs are used in the powertrain, and two-level inverters are developed by using IGBTs to derive these motors. To control the SPMSM, a control board based on a TMS320F28335 DSP module, which has fast arithmetic function and floating point operator, is used. We develop a 100 V/40 A battery pack, which includes $32{\times}4$ LiFePO4 battery cells using commercial BMS. A commercial on-board charger with 220 V (AC) input and 100 V (DC) and 18 A output is used to charge the battery pack. The performance of the developed vehicle, such as acceleration availability, maximum speed, and maximum power, is estimated based on vehicle dynamics and verified through experiments.

  • Interior Permanent Magnet Synchronous Machines (IPMSMs) with rare earth magnet are widely used in electric vehicles and hybrid electric vehicles. IPMSMs having high efficiency, high torque, and a wide speed range are employed in propulsion system. And the rotor in an IPMSM is generally made of a rare earth magnet to achieve a large energy product and high torque. This paper discusses issues regarding design and performance of IPMSMs using different factors of BH magnetic characteristic. It is necessary to choose factors of magnetic material according to permanent magnet shape in rotor for high performance. Response Surface Methodology (RSM) is selected to obtain factors of magnetic material according to variety of rotor shapes. The RSM is a collection of mathematical and statistical techniques useful for the analysis of problems in which a response of interest in influenced by several variables and the objective is to optimize response. Therefore, it is necessary to analyze the torque characteristics of an IPMSM having magnet BH hysteresis curve with different rotor shape. Factors of residual flux density (Br) factor and intrinsic coercive force (Hc) are important parameters in RSM for rotor shape. The rotor shapes for IPMSMs having magnet BH characteristic were investigated using the RSM, and three shapes were analyzed in detail using FEA. The results lead to design consequence of IPMSMs in the various rare earth magnet materials.

  • We propose an online parameter estimation method for surface-mounted permanent-magnet synchronous motor (SPMSM) using an affine projection algorithm (APA). The proposed method estimates parameters with two APAs based on the discrete-time model equation of SPMSM during motor operation. The first APA is designed to estimate inductance, and the second APA is designed to estimate resistance and flux linkage. However, in case when the d-axis current is controlled to 0A, the second APA cannot estimate resistance and flux linkage simultaneously because the matrix rank in APA becomes deficient. To overcome this problem, we temporarily inject a negative reference current input to the d-axis control loop, and the matrix in the APA then becomes full rank, which enables the simultaneous estimation of resistance and flux linkage. The proposed method is verified by PSIM simulation and an actual experiment, and the results reveal that SPMSM parameters can be estimated online during motor operation.

  • A nonlinear speed controller for a surface mounted permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) based on a newly developed adaptive backstepping approach is presented To compensate parameter uncertainties and load torque disturbance, a nonlinear adaptive backstepping control law and adaptive law are derived systematically through virtual control input and suitable Lyapunov function. Also, speed observer without using costly speed sensor is presented. Simulation results show that the proposed controller can observe the speed and track the reference speed signal generated by a reference model.

  • This paper deals with the optimal design of a permanent magnet linear synchronous motor (PMLSM) with the analysis of prototype PMLSM. In the PMLSM, thrust ripple is one of the causes disturbing high-precision position control. Therefore, Response surface methodology (RSM), one of the optimization methods, is applied to obtain the shape decreasing thrust ripple of the prototype PMLSM. In the end, characteristic analysis of the PMLSM is performed by space harmonic method for shortening of a computation time, and final results is verified by finite element analysis.

  • This paper illustrates maximum torque per ampare radio operation and efficiency operation, which are prevalently applied to the control of permanent magnet synchronous motor(PMSM). Maximum torque per ampare ratio operation minimizes the copper loss of PMSM and maximum efficiency operation minimizes the total loss of PMSM. To verify the difference of these method, simulation and experiment results applied to IPMSM(Interior type PMSM) and SPMSM(Surface mounted PMSM) are presented.

  • This paper presents a multi-objective optimal design process for an in-wheel permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) for high performance. In order to improve the characteristics of the PMSM such as the cogging torque, torque ripple and the back-EMF, the modified Taguchi method and the response surface method (RSM) are utilized. In addition, results of the proposed model are compared with the initial design and it is verified by 2D FEM.

  • This paper proposes a servo control system of SPMSM (Surface-mounted Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor) which essentially uses vector control method. The control system is composed of the PI controller for speed control and the current controller using space voltage vector PWM technique. The high-speed processing of algorithm for vector control and inverter switching for PWM is carried out by TMS320C31 DSP and IGBT module, respectively. The proposed scheme for 2.2kW SPMSM is verified through digital simulations and experiments, which show higher performance than that of traditional hysteresis current control technique.

  • The predictive speed control (PSC) strategy can realize the simultaneous control of speed and current by using one cost function. As a model-based control method, the performance of the PSC is vulnerable to model mismatches such as load torque disturbances and parameter uncertainties. To solve this problem, this paper presents a robust predictive speed control (RPSC) strategy for surface-mounted permanent magnet synchronous motor (SPMSM) drives. The proposed RPSC uses extended state observers (ESOs) to estimate the lumped disturbances caused by load torque changes and parameter mismatches. The observer-based prediction model is then compensated by using the estimated disturbances. The introduction of ESOs can achieve robustness against predictive model uncertainties. In addition, a modified cost function is designed to further suppress load torque disturbances. The performance of the proposed RPSC scheme has been corroborated by experimental results under the condition of load torque changes and parameter mismatches.
