  • Lightweight aggregate which is composed of sintered polycrystalline materials usually has a certain portion of pores inside of it. Because of such a structural characteristics, it tends to that movement of water in aggregate shows an abnormal behavior against the change of outside environment. In general, water movement behavior is controlled by porosity, distribution of pore size; however, dense surface layer will also affect water movement behavior in case of artificially sintered aggregates. Factors affecting water movement behavior in the aggregate are pore distribution, pore shape, pre-wetting method, etc. In this study, absorption characteristics of aggregate under the pressure and absorption rate according to water dipping time are analyzed for the basis of pressure pumping of lightweight concrete. Two kinds of aggregates were used for the test: one is made by 'L' company in Germany and the other is of our own made at the pilot plant in Kyonggi University. Absorption rate of aggregate is measured according to water dipping time, vacuum pressure, and quenching condition. Absorption rate of aggregate with $300^{\circ}C$ quenching is higher than that of aggregate with 24 hr water dipping. Generally the more vacuum the higher water absorption rate. Water absorption rate of 'L' aggregate under -300 mmHg is 54 % higher than that of aggregate with 24 hr water dipping; however, only 2 % increase in water absorption was measured for the K622 and K73 which were of our own.

  • Mokjae Lee Samhwan's "MaengHoEum" is the three poems of the Chinese quatrain of 5word 7poetry created according to the previous age. This poem is distinguished from the poem of the general "MaengHoHaeng" series because of it was created in the form of modern-style poetry of series, not a poetry of 5word or 7word or length phrase in a poem. The "MaengHoEum" of MokJae seems to have been built around 1801year when he was 73 years old. Therefore, his "MaengHoEum" can be called an allegory poetry or a society poetry and his poetry can be said that it was created under the criticism of the corrupt political power of the contemporary society, and the 'fierce tiger' which appeared in his poem refers to the factions of Noron Byek line which was the ruling power at that time. However, if you look at the "MaengHoEum" of MokJae, you will see a criticism of the real world, but the feeling is not intense or the description is not concrete. Although his poetry depicts the absurdity of the present reality, but he does not show positive criticism of reality or strong resistance. This characteristic, which can be seen in his poem "MaengHoEum", is the result of the study he pursued for the his life and is thought to be due to the weight of reality. The contradictions of the time of the Mokjae were never silent to him, but on the other hand he could not reveal his own struggle on the surface of the poem. Between his descendants, influenced by his actions, and the stinging gaze watching him, he had no choice but to end his feelings internally.

  • Most large cut slopes of open pit mines, roadways, and railways are steeply inclined and composed with rocks that do not contain soils. However, these rock slopes suffer both weathering and fragmentation. In the case of steep slopes, falling rock and collapse of a slope may often occur due to surface erosion. Cast-in place concrete and rubble work are the most widely used earth structure-based pressure supports that act as restraints against the collapse of the rock slope. In order to overcome the shortcomings of conventional retaining walls, a segmental grid retaining wall is being used with connects precasted segments to construct the wall. In this study, laboratory model test was conducted to estimate deformation behavior of segmental grid retaining wall with configuration of rear strecher, height and inclination of the wall. In order to examine the behavior characteristics of a segmental grid retaining wall, this research analyzes the aspects of spacial displacement through relative displacement according to change in the inclination of the wall. Also, the walls behavior according to the formation and status of the rear stretcher which serves the role of transferring the load from the header and the stretcher which make up the wall, the displacement of backfill materials in the wall, and the location of the maximum load were surveyed and the characteristics of displacement in the segmental grid retaining wall were observed. The test results of the segmental grid retaining wall showed that there was a sudden increase in failure load according to the decrease in the wall's height and the size of the in was greatly decreased. Furthermore, it revealed that with identical inclination and height, the structure of the rear stitcher did not greatly affect the starting point or size of maximum horizontal displacement, but rather had a stronger effect on the inclination of the wall.

  • Oil sands, which are largely distributed in Canada and Venezuela, are a mixture of crude oil and sandy soils. In order to extract crude oil from oil sands, construction of massive oil sand plants is required. Generally, the typically-used foundation types of the oil sand plant are driven piles and cast-in-place piles. Most of the oil sand plants are located in cold and remote regions. Installation of driven piles in frozen or organic surface soils is difficult due to high resistance and installation equipment accessability, while the cast-in-place pile has concrete curing problem due to cold temperature. Helical pile can be installed quickly and easily using rotation with a little help of vertical load. As the installation of helical pile is available using a small and light-weight installation equipment, accessibility of installation equipment is improved. The helical pile has an advantage of easy removal by rotation in reverse direction compared with that of installation. Furthermore, reuse of removed helical piles is possible when the piles are structurally safe. In this study, the behavior of helical piles varying helix pitch was analyzed based on the numerical analysis results. Numerical model was calibrated based on the results of model helical pile tests in laboratory. The ultimate helical pile loads, the displacement of each helix attached to the shaft of the helical pile, and the load sharing ratio of each helix were analyzed.

  • This study was intended to suggest the applicability of stepped boulder fishway using the concept of traditional boulder weir, focusing on the problems of existing concrete pool-and-weir fishways installed in mountain streams. To achieve this purpose, a stepped boulder fishway was designed and constructed as a pilot project in consideration of ascending capacity of the selected target fishes. Under the given discharge conditions, the hydraulic characteristics of the fishway were investigated in the field, and the characteristics and ascending capacity of the fishes were compared and analyzed. The fishway had a short length and steep slope, but the mean drops between each baffle were the range of 0.15 to 0.29 m, and this range satisfied the limit condition of about 0.40 m, which was in the limit of the drop that target fishes can ascend. The mean velocities of each baffle and pool were 0.82 to 0.87 m/sec and 0.13 to 0.24 m/sec. This result satisfied the conditions of burst speed (10 to 30 times of body length) and mean velocity of the resting pool (7 to 25% of burst speed) for target fishes. Since the bottom surface of the pool formed of boulders had a gentle reverse slope and rotational flow did not occur, the efficiency of fishway can be increased, and it will also be possible to solve the maintenance problem by flushing bed materials.

  • In this study, a lightweight geopolymer was prepared using by slag discharged from IGCC (Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle) power plant and its physical properties, the density and compressive strength, were analyzed as a function of the concentration of alkali activators, W/S ratio and aging times. Also the possibility of applying it to lightweight materials by adding Si sludge as a foaming agent to the geopolymerg was investigated. In particular, a complex composition of alkali activator and a pre-curing process were applied to improve the strength properties of lightweight geopolymers. While the compressive strength of the lightweight geopolymer using a single activator was 9.5 MPa, the specimen made with a complex composition of alkali activator had compressive strength of 2~5 times higher. In addition, the lightweight geopolymer with pre-curing process showed a compressive strength value of 18~48 % higher than that of specimen made with no precuring process. In this study, by using a complex activator and a pre-curing process. the maximum compressive strength of lightweight geopolymer was obtained as 40 MPa (The specimen was aged for 3 days and had density of $1.83g/cm^3$), which is comparable to cement concrete. By analyzing the crystal phase and microstructure of geopolymers obtained in this study using by XRD and SEM, respectively, it was confirmed that the flower-bud-like zeolite crystal was homogeneously distributed on the surface of the C-S-H gel (sodium silicate hydrate gel) in the geopolymer.

  • This study aims to evaluate the mechanical-chemical stability of used coal ash blocks, for improving fishing grounds. The surface of weathered ash blocks in seawater showed a decrease in the Ca and an increase in the Mg contents, compared to that of fresh blocks. This result reflects the substitution of Ca by Mg in seawater. The compressive strengths of ash blocks submerged into seawater during 12 months ranged from 235.23 to $447.43\;kgf/cm^2$; this is higher than the standard strength of wave-absorbing blocks($180\;kgf/cm^2)$ that are used for harbor construction. In addition, the compressive strength of ash blocks tends to increase with increasing installation time in seawater. The result of leaching experiments on coal ash blocks by Korean Standard Leaching Test(KSLT) method showed that leached concentrations of most metals except Cr(that leached up to 50 ppb, approaching standard concentration) do not exceed the seawater quality standards. A long-term(112 days) heavy metal leaching test to analyze seawater without mixing-dilution also showed that the concentrations of leached heavy metals, except for Cu, under anaerobic conditions do not exceed the seawater quality standards. Accordingly, the use of coal ash blocks in marine environments appears to be safe from chemical and mechanical factors that decrease the efficiency of concrete. Also, leaching concentration of Cu seems to be stable by decrease of leaching concentration due to dilution of seawater.

  • Purpose: The Seoul Metropolitan Government classifies the cavity risks into emergency, priority, general, and observation grades in consideration of the cavity size, asphalt pavement thickness, and pavement depth based on the cavity management grade criteria of Seoul. In this study, the depth of cracking was measured at 17 cracks identified by checking the pavement condition of the cavity at 265 cavities found in the 2019 cavity investigation service. Method: In the first phase, crack width and depth were measured using a vernier caliper, taper gauge, and depth gauge to check the cracks of the identified cavities. In the second phase, the location of the largest crack in the upper road surface was confirmed, and A.C. was drilled to further measure the crack depth. Results: As a result, the cavity management level was raised in nine of the 17 test cavity identified. Therefore, in case of emergency and priority recovery, the grade should be adjusted according to the depth of pavement crack and the thickness of residual A.C. pavement. Conclusion: In the case of cracks in the upper part of the cavity, the crack progression must be determined through the perforation and the remaining asphalt concrete thickness must be determined to determine the cavity grade.

  • Most of flood protection walls built on the impingement in mountain rivers have been made of concrete. It may cause flood disasters because the smooth wall surface could increase flow velocity. In this study the hydraulic experiments was carried out to evaluate the effect of one side wall with rectangular vertical ribs on flow resistance in open channel. The ratio of the pitch between vertical ribs to its depth, ${\lambda}_{nv}$, was designed so that it include the so-called d type and k type roughness. The range of Froude number, $F_r$, based on hydraulic radius is 0.81~1.12. Flow resistance in the open channel with a rib sidewall depends on the interval length of each ribs and the flow discharge. Maximum flow resistance occurred when ${\lambda}_{nv}$ is 9. In the d type roughness which ${\lambda}_{nv}$ is less than 3, the flow resistance decreases with increase of flow discharge. In the k type roughness which ${\lambda}_{nv}$ is greater than 3, the flow resistance increases with increase of flow discharge. The increments of flow resistance are especially great when ${\lambda}_{nv}$ are 9 and 12. The resistance due to vertical rib is mostly by the shape resistance and the vertical rib on one sidewall of open channel affects on the flow resistance so that the equivalent roughness heights of vertical rib may occur in scale of flow depth. Therefore the vertical ribs may be used to reduce the flow velocity and to move the location of maximum flow velocity from the rib sidewall to the centerward in a cross section of channels.
