  • We have studied a method for the preparation of $ACF/TiO_2$ composites involving the penetrationof titanium n-butoxide (TNB) solution into activated carbon fiber. It was focused on the characterization of $TiO_2$ formed in prorous carbon was which increased with surface functional groups by hydrochloric acid treatment. The conversion of TNB to $TiO_2$ for the acid treatment effect must be important for the preparationof $ACF/TiO_2$ composites. From the characterization of surface properties, both the BET surface area and the total pore volume decreased as the distribution of $TiO_2$ on the activated carbon fiber surfaces after acid treatments. The changes in XRD pattern showed the typical anatase type on $ACF/TiO_2$ composite for the sample named FT, FT1 and FT2 treated with 0.05, 0.1 and 0.5 M, respectively. However, XRD patern of FT3 treated with 0.5M showed mixed amatase-rutile structure. According to the results of SEM micrographs, the titanium complexe particles were irregularly distributed around carbon. And some large clusters were found when an amount of acid treatment increased. The EDX results of $ACF/TiO_2$ composites showed the presence of C, O and P with strong Ti peaks. Finally, the excellent photocatalytic activity of the $ACF/TiO_2$ composites between relative concentration($c/c_o$) of MB (methylene blue) and UV irradiation time could be attributed to the both effects between photocatalysis of the formation of titania complexes and adsorptivity of the activated carbon fiber.

  • Chromatin is an instructive DNA structure that can widely respond to external signals. An important change of chromatin is the modifications of histone for this regulation. There are accumulating lists of these modifications and the complexity of their action is gradually understood. It is evident that histone modifications play important roles in most biological processes that are involved in the expression or repression of DNA. The surface of nucleosomes is susceptible to multiplicity of modifications. Chromatin modifications can play either by eliminating chromatin contacts or by recruiting non-histone proteins to chromatin. Many of these regulations seem to be epigenetically inherited. Thus, histone modifications are closely correlated with many fundamental biological processes in animal, plant and microbial kingdoms. Failures of histone modification lead, in general, to defective chromosome condensation or decondensation, impeding many biological functions including development, maturation, and protection against various diseases.

  • Korean pine(Pinus densiflora) bark was evaluated for its adsorption capacity of Cu(II) ions from aqueous solution by running a series of batch experiments. Prior to the tests, the milled barks were treated with 1 N NaOH or 1 N HCl to examine the effect of surface modification. For comparison, untreated bark was tested under same condition. Within the tested pH range between 3 and 6, NaOH treatment increased Cu(II) adsorption capacity by $139\sim184%$, while HCl treatment decreased it by $37\sim42%$. Maximum copper ion uptake by bark was observed at pH $5\sim6$, but pH of solution was not a potent influence. A pseudo second-order kinetic model fitted well for the sorption of copper ion onto bark. For NaOH-treated bark, the calculated sorption capacity$(q_e)$ increased from 6.58 to 12.77 mg/g, while the equilibrium rate constant$(k_2)$ decreased from 0.284 to 0.014 g/mg/min as initial Cu(II) concentration doubled from 100 mg/L. A batch isotherm test using NaOH-treated bark showed that equilibrium sorption data were represented by both the Langmuir model and the Freundlich model. It was confirmed that carboxylic acid of bark was involved in the Cu(II) adsorption. For NaOH-treated bark, in particular, carboxylate ion produced by hydrolysis or saponification appeared to be a major functional roup responsible for the enhanced Cu(II) sorption.

  • Organic thin-film transistors (OTFTs) have received considerable attention because their potential applications for nano-scale thin-film structures have been widely researched for large-scale integration industries, such as semiconductors and displays. However, research in developing n-type materials and devices has been relatively shortage than developing p-type materials. Therefore, we report on the fabrication of top-contact [6,6]-phenyl-C61-butyricacidmethylester (PCBM) TFTs by using three different solvent, o-dichlorobenzene, toluene and chloroform. An appropriate choice of solvent shows that the electrical characteristics of PCBM TFTs can be improved. Moreover, our PCBM TFTs with the cross-linked Poly(4-vinylphenol) dielectric layer exhibits the most pronounced improvements in terms of the field-effect mobility (${\sim}0.034cm^2/Vs$) and the on/off current ratio (${\sim}1.3{\times}10^5$) for our results. From these results, it can be concluded that solvent-modification of an organic semiconductor in PCBM TFTs is useful and can be extended to further investigations on the PCBM TFTs having polymeric gate dielectrics. It is expected that process optimizations using solution-processing of organic semiconductor materials will allow the development of the n-type organic TFTs for low-cost electronics and various electronic applications.

  • In this study, we prepared electrically conducting composites using epoxy resin of diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A (DGEBA) as a matrix, triethylenetetramine (TETA) as a hardener and nickel powder or multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) grafted with $-NH_2$ groups (MWCNT-$NH_2$) as electrically conducting fillers. Electrical conductivity of composite films were measured by coating on the slide glass with a doctor blade. We measured modification reactions of MWCNT and reaction of MWCNT-$NH_2$ with DGEBA epoxy resin by fourier transform infrared spectrometer (FTIR), thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA) and elemental analyzer (EA). Morphology of composites was investigated by scanning electron microscope (SEM) and sheet resistances of composites were measured by 4-point probe. We found $(9.87{\pm}1.09){\times}10^4{\Omega}/sq$ of sheet resistance for epoxy composite containing both 40 wt% nickel powder and 0.5 wt% of MWCNT-$NH_2$ as fillers, equivalent to epoxy composite containing 53.3 wt% nickel powder only as a filler.

  • In this study, we performed surface modification of silica nanoparticles with bis[3-(triethoxysilylpropyl)]tetrasulfide (TESPT) silane coupling agent to study the effects of treatment temperature, treatment time, and amount of TESPT used on the silanization degree with Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), elemental analysis (EA) and solid state $^{13}C$ and $^{29}Si$ cross-polarization magic angle spinning (CP/MAS) nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR). We found peak area of isolated silanol groups at $3747cm^{-1}$ decreased, but peak area of $-CH_2$ asymmetric stretching of TESPT at $2938cm^{-1}$ increased with the amount of TESPT from FTIR measurements. We also used universal testing machine (UTM) to study mechanical properties of styrene butadiene rubber (SBR) nanocomposites with 20 phr (parts per hundred of rubber) of pristine and TESPT modified silicas, respectively. The tensile strength and 100% modulus of modified silica/SBR nanocomposite were enhanced from 5.65 to 9.38MPa, from 1.62 to 2.73 MPa, respectively, compared to those of pristine silica/SBR nanocomposite.

  • The effects of lowering ECAP temperature during ECAP process and Post-ECAP annealing on microstructure, texture and mechanical properties of the AZ31 alloys have been investigated in the present study. The as-extruded materials were ECAP processed to 2 passes at 553K prior to subsequent pressing up to 6 passes at 523K or 493K. When this method of lowering ECAP temperature during ECAP was used, the rods could be successfully deformed up to 6 passes without any surface cracking. Grain refinement during ECAP process at 553K might have helped the material to endure further straining at lower deformation temperatures probably by increasing the strain accommodation effect by grain boundary sliding, causing stress relaxation. Texture modification during ECAP has a great influence on the strength of Mg alloys because HCP metals have limited number of slip systems. As slip is most prone to take place on basal planes in Mg at room temperature, the rotation of high fraction of basal planes to the directions favorable for slip as in ECAP decreases the yield stress appreciably. The strength of AZ31 Mg alloys increases with decrease of grain size if the texture is constant though ECAP deformation history is different. A standard positive strength dependence on the grain size for Mg alloys with the similar texture (Fig. 1) supports that the softening of ECAPed Mg alloys (a negative slope) typically observed despite the significant grain refinement is due to the texture modification where the rotation of basal planes occurs towards the orientation for easier slip. It could be predicted that if the original fiber texture is restored after ECAP treatment yielding marked grain refinement, yield stress as high as 500 MPa will be obtained at the grain size of ${\sim}1{\mu}m$. Differential speed rolling (DSR) with a high speed ratio between the upper and lower rolls was applied to alter the microstructure and texture of the AZ31 sheets. Significant grain refinement took place during the rolling owing to introduction of large shear deformation. Grain size as small as $1.4{\mu}m$ could be obtained at 423K after DSR. There was a good correlation between the (0002) pole intensity and tensile elongation. This result indicates that tensile ductility improvement in the asymmetrically rolled AZ31 Mg alloys is closely related to the weakening of basal texture during DSR. Further basal texture weakening occurred during annealing after DSR. According to Hall-Petch relation shown in Fig. 1, the strength of the asymmetrically rolled AZ31 is lower than that of the symmetrically rolled one when compared at the same grain size. This result was attributed to weakening of fiber texture during DSR. The DSRed AZ31, however, shows higher strength than the ECAPed AZ31 where texture has been completely replaced by a new texture associated with high Schmid factors.

  • In order to obtain a method of scouring of raw silk and degumming of cocoon by the appling of bacterial enzyme of sericinase, a strain of proper bacteria was isolated and some properties of the enzyme produced by the isolated bacteria were studied and the following results were obtained. 1) Optimum pH and temperature were indicating 7.5 and $50^{\circ}C$. and on these conditions, the silk fibroin will get no modification at all. 2) Sericinase activity was inhibited by calcium ion in the free incubation but same ions reacted as an activator in the reaction with substrate. So, degumming of Tussah cocoon which contains calcium oxalate in the cocoon layer will be possible by the treatment of this enzyme. 3) This bacterial sericinase never gives any affection to the fibroin layer of the silk. 4) The factors of smooth-surface condition, damage of fibroin layer, touching, luster and degumming effect of the silk resulting by the enzyme treatment were more appropriate than the results of other scouring methods, saponin, alkali and saponin-alkali using methods. We expect to get the same scouring result that compared with the papain or pancreatin were applied.

  • In this paper, poly (dimethyl siloxane) (PDMS) was modified using electron beam irradiation and its property was investigated. PDMS sheets prepared using a conventional thermal curing method were irradiated by electron beams at absorbed doses between 20 and 200 kGy and their properties were characterized using swelling degree and contact angle measurements, universal testing machine (UTM), thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA), and X -ray photoelectron spectrometer (XPS). The results of the swelling degree measurements, UTM, and TGA revealed that the swelling degree of the irradiated PDMS sheets was reduced down to 24% in comparison to the control sheet, and their compression strength and thermal decomposition temperature increased up to maximum 2.5 MFa and $10^{\circ}C$, respectively, due to the increase in crosslinking density by irradiation. In addition, on the basis of the results of contact angle measurements and XPS, the wettability of the PDMS sheets was enhanced up to 24% owing to the generation of hydrophilic functional groups on the PDMS surface by oxidation during electron beam irradiation.

  • In 'solid-phase' PEGylation, the conjugation reaction occurs as the proteins are attached to a solid matrix, and thus it can have distinct advantages over the conventional, solution-phase process. We report a case study: rhIFN-${\alpha}$-2a was first adsorbed to cation exchange resin and then N-terminally PEGylated by aldehyde mPEG of 5, 10, and 20 kD through reductive alkylation. After the PEGylation, salt gradient elution efficiently recovered the mono-PEGylate in a purified form from the unwanted species such as unmodified IFN, unreacted PEG, and others. The mono-PEGylation and its purification were integrated in a single chromatographic step. Depending on the molecular weight of the mPEG aldehyde used, the mono-PEGylation yield ranged 50-64%. We could overcome the major problems of random, or uncontrollable, multi-PEGylation and the post-PEGylation purification difficulties associated with the solution-phase process. N-terminal sequencing and MALDI-TOF MS confirmed that a PEG molecule was conjugated only to the N-terminus. Compared with the unmodified IFN, the mono-PEGylate showed the reduced anti-viral activity as measured by the cell proliferation assay. The bioactivity was reduced more as the higher molecular weight PEG was conjugated. Immunoreactivity, evaluated indirectly by antibody binding activity using a surface plasmon resonance biosensor, also decreased. Nevertheless, trypsin resistance as well as thermal stability was considerably improved.
