This study aims to perform the characteristic evaluation of surface grinding for the STD11 material with experimental and analytic techniques based on the response surface model. The grinding force acting on the workpiece and the ground surface roughness were measured according to the change of grain size, table speed and depth of cut. The effect of spark-out on the grinding force and the surface roughness was also characterized. The frictional coefficient between workpiece and grinding wheel could be determined by the analysis of spark-out effect. From the experimental data, the second-order response surface models were developed to predict the grinding force and the surface roughness. Validation of the developed model was examined.

Surface temperature has been derived from the MODIS/ASTER airborne simulator (MASTER) mid-wave infrared single channel data using the MODerate resolution atmospheric TRANsmission (MODTRAN) radiative transfer model with input data including the University of Wisconsin (UW) emissivity, the National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP) atmospheric profiles, and solar and line-of-sight geometry. We have selected the study area that covers some surface types such as water, sand, agricultural (vegetated) land, and clouds. Results of the current study show the reasonable geographical distribution of surface temperature over land and water similar to the pattern of the MASTER L2 surface temperature. The thorough quantitative validation of surface temperature retrieved from this study is somehow limited due to the lack of in-situ measurements. One point comparison at the Salton Sea buoy shows that the present estimate is 1.8 K higher than the field data. Further comparison with the MASTER L2 surface temperature over the study area reveals statistically good agreement with mean differences of 4.6 K between two estimates. We further analyze the surface temperature differences between two estimates and find primary factors to be emissivity and atmospheric correction.
Intermediate filaments are the mechanical ropes for both cytoskeleton and nucleoskeleton of the cell which provide tensile force to these skeletons. In providing the mechanical support to the cell, they are likely to buckle. We used conventional Euler buckling model to find the critical buckling force under different boundary conditions which they assume during different functions. However, there are many experimental and theoretical studies about other cytoskeleton components which demonstrate that due to mechanical coupling with the surrounding surface, the critical buckling force increases considerably. Motivated with these results, we also investigated the influence of surface effects on the critical buckling force of intermediate filaments. The surface effects become profound because of increasing ratio of surface area of intermediate filaments to bulk at nano-scale. The model has been solved analytically to obtain relations for the critical forces for the buckling of intermediate filaments without and with surface effects. We found that critical buckling force with surface effects increases to a large extent due to mechanical coupling of intermediate filaments with the surrounding surface. Our study may be useful to develop a unified experimental protocol to characterize the physical properties of Intermediate filaments and may be helpful in understanding many biological phenomenon involving intermediate filaments.

Cutter deflections in the ball-end milling process is one of the main causes of the machining errors on a free-form surface. In order to avoid machining errors in this process, a methodology avoiding these machining errors on the free-form surfaces has been developed. In this method, feedrates in the finish cuts are adjusted for the prevention of machining errors. A model for the prediction of machining errors on the free-form surface is analytically derived as a function of feed and normal vector at the surface of contact point by the cutter. This model is applied to the dertermination of the adjusted feedrates which satisfy the machining tolerance of the surface. In the finish cuts of a simple curved surface, the suggested model is examined by the measurements of the generated machining error on this surface. And also, this surface is machined with the adjusted feedrates for the given machining tolerance. The measured machining errors on this surface are compared with the given tolerance. In this comparisons, it is shown that the predicted errors are fairly good agreement with the test results.
The purpose of this study is to develop a GIS application and interface model (GISCELWAB) for the temporal and spatial simulation of surface runoff from a small watershed. The model was constituted by three sub - models : The input data extraction model (GISINDATA) which prepares cell-based input data automatically for a given watershed, the cell water balance model(CELWAB) which calculates the water balance for a cell and simulates surface runoff of watershed simultaneously by the interaction of cells, and the output data management model(GISOUTDISP) which visualize the results of temporal and spatial variation of surface runoff. The input data extraction model was developed to solve the time-consuming problems for the input-data preparation of distributed hydrologic model. The input data for CELWAB can be obtained by extracting ASCII data from a vector map. The output data management model was developed to convert the storage depth and discharge of cell into grid map. This model ean-bles to visualize the temporal and spatial formulation process of watershed storage depth and surface runoff wholly with time increment.
Land surface temperature in ecohydrology is a variable that links surface structure to soil processes and yet its spatial prediction across landscapes with variable surface structure is poorly understood. And there are an insufficient number of soil temperature monitoring stations. In this study, a grid-based land surface temperature prediction model is proposed. Target sites are Andong and Namgang dam region. The proposed model is run in the following way. At first, geo-referenced site specific air temperatures are estimated using a kriging technique from data collected from 60 point weather stations. Then surface soil temperature is computed from the estimated geo-referenced site-specific air temperature and normalized difference vegetation index. After the model is calibrated with data collected from observed remote-sensed soil temperature, a soil temperature map is prepared based on the predictions of the model for each geo-referenced site. The daily and monthly simulated soil temperature shows that the proposed model is useful for reproducing observed soil temperature. Soil temperatures at 30 and 50 cm of soil depth are also well simulated.

This study compared the sea surface wind pattern between model results from KMA operational model (RDAPS) and observational results from QuikSCAT in the 2005-2006 year. The mean spatial distributions of sea surface wind show the prominent seasonal patterns of summer and winter season adjacent to Korean Peninsular. The statistical analysis also shows well seasonal variation of sea surface wind patterns between model and observation results. The BIAS value represents less than -0.5 m/s and -1 m/s in summer and winter seasons, respectively. The spatially averaged correlation coefficient shows larger than 0.7 and 0.8 in summer and winter seasons, respectively. The correlation coefficient of winter season shows higher value than that of summer season in the comparison between model and observation. This results show that the RDAPS model simulate well strong sea surface wind in winter season rather than weak sea surface wind in summer season.
We performed a shot peening test and used a 2-D finite element model which predicts the compressive residual stress distribution below the material's surface. In this study, the concept of 'impact cycle' is introduced to account for the irregularity in the shot's impact position during testing. The impact cycle was imbedded in the finite element model. In the shot peening test, shot bombarded a type-A Almen strip surface with different impact velocities. To verify the proposed finite element model, we compared the deformed cross sectional shape of the Almen strips with the shapes computed by the proposed finite element model. Good agreement was noted between measurements and the finite element model predictions. With the verified finite element model, a series of finite element simulations was conducted to compute the residual stress distribution below the material's surface and the characteristics of these distributions are discussed.
An one dimensional atmosphere-canopy-soil interaction model is developed to estimate of the heat budget parameter in the atmospheric boundary layer. The canopy model is composed of the three balance equations of energy, temperature, moisture at ground surface and canopy layer with three independent variables of Tf(foliage temperature), Tg(ground temperature), and qg(ground specific humidity). The model was verilied by comparative study with OSUID(Oregon State University One Dimensional Model) proved in HAPEX-MOBILHY experiment. Also we applied this model in two dimensional land-sea breeze circulation. According to the results of this study, surface characteristics considering canopy acted importantly upon the simulation of meso-scale circulation. The factors which used in the numerical experiment are as follows ; the change for a sort of soil(sand and peat), the change for shielding factor, and the change for a kind of vegetation.

This paper presents a new model of NC verification in NC milling using z-map. The model can describe the motion of machine tool like a real machine effectively. The model uses x, y, and z directional feed rate as well as cutting data for modeling Z-map of workpiece. The model verifies the over-cut, the under-cut and the surface topography using NC codes and cutting conditions. To investigate the performance of the model, simulation study was carried out. As the results, the model gave the geometry accuracy of workpiece, the surface topography, and the chip loads.
