  • In laser heat treatment process of steels, the thin layer of substrate is rapidly heated to the austenitizing temperature and subsequently cooled at a very fast rate due to the self-quenching effect. Consequently, it is transformed to martensitic structure which has low magnetic permeability. This observation facilitates the use of a sensor measuring the change of electromagnetic field induced by the hardening layer. In this paper, the eddy-current electromagnetic field is analyzed by a finite element method. The purpose of this analysis is to investigate how the electrical impedance of the sensor's sensing coil varies with the change in permeability. To achieve this, a numerical model is formulated, taking into consideration the hardening depth, distance of the sensor from the hardened surface and the frequency driving the sensor. The results obtained by numerical simulation show that the eddy-current measurement method can feasibly be used to measure the changing hardening depth within the frequency range from 10 kHz to 50 kHz.

  • Surface hardening mechanism of H13 steel was investigated when ion niriding after shot peening process was applied. Severe plastic deformation induced nanocrystallized grains at surface region. Higher nitrogen concentration was achieved in ion nitrided specimen with shot peening treatment than in single nitrided specimen. The elemental mapping on chromium and nitrogen by TEM-EELs showed chromium dissolved in matrix enhanced bulk nitrogen diffusion at surface region. Higher nitrogen diffusion also caused lattice distortion. Nano-sized grains, higher nitrogen concentration, and lattice diffustion contributed to the surface hardening.

  • Laser surface hardening is an effective technique used to improve the tribological properties and also to increase the service life of automobile components such as camshafts, crankshatfs, lorry brake drums and gears. High power CO2 lasers and Nd:YAG lasers are employed for localized hardening of materials and hence are of potential application in the automobile industries. The heat is conducted rapidly into the bulk of the specimen causing self-quenching to occur and the formation of martensitic structure. In this investigation, the microstructure features occurring in Nd:YAG laser hardening SM45C steel are discussed with the use of optical microscopic and scanning electron microscopic analysis. Moreover, This paper describes the optimism of the processing parameters for maximum hardened depth of SM45C steel specimens of 3mm thickness by using CW Nd:YAG laser. Travel speed was varied from 0.6m/min to 1.0m/min. The maximum hardness and case depth fo SM45C steel are 780Hv and 0.4mm by laser hardening.

  • High temperature and low temperature gaseous nitriding was performed in order to study of the surface hardening and wear properties of the nitrided AISI 410 Martensitic stainless steels. High temperature gaseous nitiridng (HTGN) was carried out using partial pressure $N_2$ gas at $1,100^{\circ}C$ for 10 hour, and Low temperature gaseous nitiridng (LTGN) was conducted in a gas mixture of NH3 and N2 at $470^{\circ}C$ for 10 hour. The nitrided samples were characterized by microhardness measurements, optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. The phases were identified by X-ray diffraction and nitrogen concentration was analyzed by GD-OES. The HTGN specimen had a surface hardness of about $700HV_{0.1}$, $350{\mu}m$ of case depth. A ${\sim}50{\mu}m$ thick, $1,250HV_{0.1}$ hard nitrided case formed at the surface of the AISI 410 steel by LTGN, composed nitrogen supersaturated expanded martensite and ${\varepsilon}-Fe_{24}N_{10}$ iron nitrides. Additionally, the results of the wear tests, carried out LTGN specimen was low friction coefficient and high worn mass loss of ball. The increase in wear resistance can be mainly attributed to the increase in hardness and to the lattice distortion caused by higher nitrogen concentration.

  • Recently, from general machine parts and automobile parts using carbon steel to a mold, there has been efforts for improving durability and attrition resistance of these parts. Especially, heat treatment with laser which works fast and automatically can be used for the mass production with high quality. Moreover, local heat treatment can be used to handle with complex and precise parts. Accordingly, we analyzed hardening characteristics of carbon steel using the finite element method and compare the experimental results to have more reliability. We also proved the cause of thermal deformation with temperature and stress distribution by heat treatment. After these analysis and experimental, we found that each maximum hardness of the two tests was 728 Hv and 700 Hv, on condition of $1050^{\circ}C$ heating temperature, and 2 mm/sec laser speed. We also found that difference of surface stress-distribution was occurred, and this makes deformation mode up after heat treatment.

  • Various aging treatments were conducted on AISI 630 martensitic precipitation hardening stainless steel in order to optimize aging condition. Aging treatment was carried out in the vacuum chamber of Ar gas with changing aging temperature from 380℃ to 430℃ and aging time from 2h to 8h at 400℃. After obtaining the optimized aging condition, several nitrocarburizing treatments were done without and with the aging treatment. Nitrocarburizing was performed on the samples with a gas mixture of H2, N2 and CH4 for 15 h at vacuum pressure of 4.0 Torr and discharge voltage of 400V. The corrosion resistance was improved noticeably by combined process of aging and nitrocarburizing treatment, which is attributed to higher chromium and nitrogen content in the passive layer, as confirmed by XPS analysis. The optimized condition is finalized as, 4h aging at 400℃ and then subsequent nitrocarburizing at 400℃ with 25% nitrogen and 4% methane gas for 15h at vacuum pressure of 4.0 Torr and discharge voltage of 400V, resulting in the surface hardness of around 1300 HV0.05 and α'N layer thickness of around 11 ㎛ respectively.

  • This study has been performed to investigate into some effects of power density and traverse speed of laser beam on optical microstructure, hardness and wear characteristics of gray cast iron treated by laser surface hardening technique. Optical micrograph has shown that large martensite and a small amount of retained austenite appear in outermost surface layer with fine martensite in inside hardened zone. Hardness measurements have revealed that the range of maximun hardness value is $Hv=650{\pm}15$ and as the power density increases and the traverse speed decreses, the depth of hardened zone increases due to as increase in input power density. Wear test has exhibited that wear rasistance of laser surface hardened specimen is superier compared to that of untreated specimen under the condition of same load at a given sliding distance, showing that absorption results of an wxidized substance due to a heavy abrasion appear in untreated specimen. The amount of weight loss of laser surface hardened specimen with respect to sliding distance at a given load decreses with increasing traverse speed at a given power density and with increasing power density at a given traverse speed.

  • Nowadays, many components in automobile, aircraft, offshore structure and industry require lightness and high strength. However, since developments of advanced materials have limitations, it mainly is applying to method of surface hardening. This study offered research about camshaft that is one among engine important component. The material used in this study is 0.53% carbon steel as structure material of camshaft, splineshaft, coupling, pulley, driveshaft et cetera. Camshaft is processed using mainly carbon steel, and receives wear and fatigue by special quality high speed of parts. Therefore, camshaft need surface hardening to improve camshaft's fatigue life and increase durability of engine. This study compare to residual stress and martensite microstructure created by high frequency induction treatment, and these results lead to the conclusion of fatigue crack growth characteristics.
