  • It was investigated that reinforced species, billet condition and extrusion variation in Al 6061 composite material effected on extrusion process of particulate reinforced composite material. The strength of composite material with reinforcement species revealed SiC$\sub$w/> A1$_2$O$\sub$3f/ > A1$_2$O$\sub$3f/ > A1$_2$O$\sub$3f/ orderly. K$\sub$w/ increased as volute fraction increased in all composite material. The composite materials reinforced by A1$_2$ $O_3$required the larger pressure in hot extrusion process than those by SiC$\sub$p/ at all condition. Extrusion process tended to decrease as the semi-angle of extrusion dies increased because larger contact area caused larger shear friction. Extrusion temperature went up about 50$^{\circ}C$ in low elevated deformation temperature. In extrusion temperature above 500$^{\circ}C$, severe tearing occurred on extrusion surface. More reinforcement in volume fraction, more hot tearing.

  • Every object's patterns is the balancing-relationship between the object's inner-energy and outer-stress. To see this as a balancing-relationship between an organism, inner-energy would be the occurrence of thermodynamic entropy which is for its existing maintenance. Outer-stress would be the friction that comes from the surrounding environment. Namely, we can see that object's figure exists in the balance between an extort to survive and fiction that disturb it. However, it is fourth that these figures are consisted of a curve and curved-surface which is not a straight line. So, it is impossible to find a figure made up of straight lines and surfaces in the existing object's world. It's true that we have regarded only a curve as the beautiful. Here, we have presented that in a curve, there exists an important function which protect our survival from the ancient humanity. And by closely observing the function in a physical dynamic-pattern sight, we've searched what is important in the design's origin that handle curve-patterns. Of course it would be more reasonable to analyze it in the standpoint of Mathematics, Chemistry, or Biology, and synthesize the points. However, due to the limitation of the researchability, we will concern about the physical structure in the design. Deficient details will be replenished through the study between educational systems. As a result, we have confirmed that, devoting the curve's physical structure-phenomenon (occurred in nature) to the design, is more beautiful in our eyes, too.

  • Brittle failure of Mesozoic granite in the Daejeon region is predicted using empirical analysis and numerical modeling techniques. The input parameters selected for these techniques were based on the results of laboratory tests, including damage-controlled tests. Rock masses that were considered to be strong during laboratory testing were assigned to "group A" and those considered to be extremely strong were assigned to "group B". The properties of each group were then used in the analyses. In-situ stress measurements, or the ratio of horizontal to vertical stress (k), were also necessary for the analyses, but no such measurements have been made in the study area. Therefore, k values of 1, 2, and 3 were assumed. In the case of k=1, empirical analysis and numerical modeling show no indication of brittle failure from the surface to1000 m depth. When k=2, brittle failure of the rock mass occurs at depths below 800 m. For k=3, brittle failure occurs at depths below 600 m. Although both the Cohesion Weakening Friction Strengthening (CWFS) and Mohr-Coulomb models were used to predict brittle failure, only the CWFS model performed well in simulating the range and depth of the brittle failure zone.

  • Determination of the order of latent fingerprints deposition on the surface of thermal paper, often found in crime scenes, is related to the study of time course and aging of fingerprints and can provide additional information in criminal investigations. A preliminary study was performed to determine the deposition order of fingerprints left with two different conditions of deposition pressure and time (in seconds) after 1 day intervals for 7 days on thermal paper (receipt and fax thermal paper) using an iodine fuming method. The resultant images of the visualized fingerprints were analyzed with densitometric image analysis to measure the changes in the areas of the ridges, which can be correlated to the deposition order. No significant variation was found with the different types of thermal paper. The average areas of the friction ridges increased gradually or were similar to the values from day 1 for 3 days, and then a continual decrease was shown from day 4 through day 7. The area values from day 6 and day 7 were less than half of those from day 1. Furthermore, the test with overlapped fingerprints showed the possibility of differentiation between fingerprints that are 1-3 and 6-7 days old based on the clarity visible to the naked eye. Additional experiments with the deposition conditions can prove that the current method is valuable for the determining the order of fingerprint deposition on thermal paper.

  • The biomimetic approach on the cuticular spinning nozzles of the major ampullate silk glands in the golden-web spider Nephila calvata has been attempted using various visualizing techniques of light and electron microscopes to improve the design of spinning nozzle for producing synthetic nanofibers spun from electrospinning apparatus. The major ampullate spigot which has the most effective nozzle system to produce nanofibers for dragline silk with high strength and elasticity is connected via the bullet type spigot on anterior spinneret with flexible terminal segment. The excretory duct which transports the liquid silk feedstock from ampulla to spigot is divided into 3 limbs by loops back on itself to form an S-shape morphology that is bundled in connective tissue. Final diameter of the nanofibers at nozzle was dramatically reduced by gradual narrowing of duct cuticle less than 10 times comparing to its original size of funnel region. Moreover, the funnel has a characteristic cuticular organization with porous microstructure which seems to be related to water removal from feedstock of silk precursors. High magnification electron micrographs also reveal the presence of the spiral grooves on the surface of the cuticular intima near the valve which presumed to reduce friction during rapid flow of liquid silk.

  • After debris flow caused damage during recent years, many scholars and engineers have thrown their effort into analyzing risk from debris flow in Korea. But it is hard to predict damage by debris flow taken place in wide area. Recently, SINMAP program is widely well used to estimate the amount of debris flow and its' range. In order to make frequent use of it, the most important thing is selection of accurate input parameters. In-situ experiments, which are avaliable in the mountain, is to be suggested to get dependable input parameters for SINMAP. Those are permeability, cohesion, density, friction angle and thickness in SINMAP. To get those, test pit, block sampling, in-situ density test, auger boring, permeability test on ground surface, borehole shear test and dynamic cone test and so forth were selected. In addition, the reliability of the results will be increased through comparing with those by laboratory tests. Hence, the experiments are hard to enter the sites without temporary road and, if possible, licensing and many times are needed, too. Small size experiments are indeed necessary to get accurate parameters.

  • In this study the fabrication technology and mechanical properties of AC8A/$Al_2O_3$ Composites by squeeze casting process were investigated to develope for application as the piston materials that require good friction, wear resistance, and thermal stability. AC8A/$Al_2O_3$ composistes without a porosity and the break of preform were fabricated at the melt temperature of $740^{\circ}C$, the preform temperature of $500^{\circ}C$, and mold temperature of $400^{\circ}C$ under the applied pressure of $1200kg/cm^2$ as the results of the observation of microstructures. As the results of this study, the tensile strength of AC8A/$Al_2O_3$ composites was not increased linearly with $Al_2O_3$ volume fraction and so it seemed not to agree with the rule of mixture, which had been used often in metal matrix composite. Also the tensile strength after thermal fatigue test was little different from that before the test. Consequently it was thought that AC8A/$Al_2O_3$ composites fabricated under our experimental conditions had a good thermal stability and subsequently a good interface bonding. Wear rate(i.e., volume loss per unit sliding distance) of AC8A/$Al_2O_3$ composites was decreased with $Al_2O_3$ volume fraction and the sliding speed at both room temperature and $250^{\circ}C$ and so there was a good correlation between wear rate and hardness. Also the wear rate of AC/8A20% $Al_2O_3$ composities was obtained the value of $1.65cm^3/cm$ at sliding speed of 1.14m/sec as compared with about $3.0\;{\times}10^{-8}cm^3/cm$ hyereutectie Al-Si alloy(Al-16%Si-2%Cu-1%Fe-1%Ni), which applied presently for piston materials. The wear behavior of $Al_2O_3$ composites was observed to a type of abrasive wear by the SEM view of wear surface.

  • The shear stress characteristics of landslide materials can be affected by various factors. We examined the shear stress characteristics of two different soils using ring-shear apparatus, in which saturation-consolidation-shearing speed can be easily controlled. This paper presents (i) shear stress-time characteristics, (ii) shear stress depending on normal stress and shear speed and (iii) shear stress as a function of shearing speed. Materials used in this paper were the Nakdong River sand and muds taken from Jinhae coastal area in Korea. Samples were prepared in three types: Sand (upper)-Sand (lower), Clay (upper)-Clay (lower) and Sand (upper)-Clay (lower). The upper and lower indicate the samples placed in upper and lower ring shear boxes, respectively. For given normal stresses (50 and 100 kPa) and shearing speed (0.1 mm/sec), we performed ring shear tests. Then the failure lines were determined in the second test. Last, we determined the shear stress characteristics depending on different shearing speeds, such as 0.01, 0.1, 1, 10, 100 mm/sec. As a result, we found that shear stress characteristics are strongly dependent on above three factors. The shear stress of Sand (upper)-Clay (lower) is smaller than that of Sand (upper)-Sand (lower), but slightly larger than that of Clay (upper)-Clay (lower). The shear stress is also characterized by grain crushing and wetting process at slip surface.

  • In this paper, we performed the design optimization dual-shell and tube heat exchanger on exhaust waste heat recovery for gas heat pump using CFD and RSM. CFD analysis is useful to design the complex structure such as double shell and tube heat exchanger. By computer simulation, engineers can assess the feasibility of the given design factors and change them to get a better design. But if one wishes to perform complex analysis on the simulation, such dual-shell and tube heat exchanger for GHP, the computational time can become overwhelming. CFD is powerful but it takes a lot of time for complex structure. Therefore, the CFD analysis is minimized by the optimization using the RSM method. As a result, the number of baffle and tube are optimized by 6 baffles and 25 tubes for heat transfer and flow friction. And then pressure drop and heat transfer is improved about 12.2%. We confirm the design optimization using CFD and RSM is useful on complex structure of heat exchanger.

  • Urban sewer systems are designed to operate in open-channel flow regime and energy loss at circular manholes are usually not significant. However, the energy loss at manholes, often exceeding the friction loss of pipes under surcharge flow, is considered as one of the major causes of inundation in urban area. Therefore, it is necessary to analyze the head loss associated with manholes, especially in surcharge flow. Hydraulic experimental apparatus which can be changed the invert type(CASE A, B, C) and step height(CASE I, II, III) was installed for this study. The range of the experimental discharges were from $1.0{\ell}/sec$ to $5.6\;{\ell}/sec$. As the manhole diameter ratio($D_m/D_{in}$) increases, head loss coefficient increases due to strong horizontal swirl motion. Head loss coefficient was maximum because of strong oscillation of water surface when the range of manhole depth ratios($h_m/D_{in}$) were from 1.0 to 1.5. The average head loss coefficients for CASE A, B, and C were 0.45, 0.37, and 0.30, respectively. Accordingly, U-invert is most effective for energy loss reduction at circular manhole. This head loss coefficients could be available to design the urban sewer system with surcharge flow.
