Experimental and numerical investigations were conducted for an internal flow in an axial flow stator of a diagonal flow fan. A corner separation near the hub surface and the suction surface of a stator blade was focused on, and further, three-dimensional vortices in separated flow were investigated by the numerical analysis. At low flow rate of 80% of the design flow rate, a corner separation of the stator between the suction surface and the hub surface can be found in both experimental and calculated results. Separation vortices are observed in the limiting streamline patterns both on the blade suction and on the hub surfaces at 80% of the design flow rate in the calculated results. It also can be observed in the streamline pattern that both vortices from the blade suction surface and from the hub surface keep vortex structures up to far locations from these wall surfaces. An attempt to explain the vortices within a three-dimensional separation is introduced by using vortex filaments.
In this study, erosion tests and erosion-corrosion tests of Al5083-H321 aluminum alloy were conducted at various flow rates in seawater. The erosion tests were conducted at a flow rate of 0 to 20 m/s, and erosion-corrosion tests were performed by potentiodynamic polarization method at the same flow rate. Characteristic evaluation after the erosion test was conducted by surface analysis. Characteristic evaluation after the erosion-corrosion test was performed by Tafel extrapolation and surface analysis. The results of the surface analysis after the erosion test showed that surface damage tended to increase as the flow rate increased. In particular, intermetallic particles were separated due to the breakdown of the oxide film at 10 m/s or more. In the erosion-corrosion test, the corrosion current density increased as the flow rate increased. Additionally, the surface analysis showed that surface damage occurred in a vortex shape and the width of the surface damage tended to increase as the flow rate increased. Moreover, damage at 0 m/s, proceeded in a depth direction due to the growth of pitting corrosion, and the damaged area tended to increase due to acceleration of the intermetallic particle loss by the fluid impact.
Surface roughness is present in most of the microfluidic devices due to the microfabrication techniques. This paper presents lattice Boltzmann method (LBM) results for laminar flow in a microchannel with surface roughness. The surface roughness is modeled by an array of rectangular modules placed on top and bottom side of a parallel-plate channel. In this study, LBGK D2Q9 code in lattice Boltzmann Method is used to simulate flow field for low Reynolds number in a micro-channel. The effects of relative surface roughness, roughness distribution, roughness size and the results are presented in the form of the product of friction factor and Reynolds number. Finally, a significant increase in Poiseuille number is detected as the surface roughness is considered, while the effect of roughness on the microflow field depends on the surface roughness.
The purpose of this paper is to analyze and discuss the effects of surface roughness by comparing the elastohydrodynamic lubrication(EHL) analysis of smooth surface and rough surface as the ball bearing. In order to do this, The average flow model is adapted for the interaction of the flow rheology of lubricant and surface roughness. The average Reynolds equation and the related flow factor which describes the coupled effects of surface roughness and flow rheology, the viscosity-pressure and density-pressure relations equations, the elastic deformation equation, and the force balance equation are solved simultaneously. The results show that effects of surface roughness on the film thickness and pressre distribution should be considered especially in EHL contact problems.
In the chemical, mineral and electronics industries, mechanically stirred tanks are widely used for complex liquid and particle mixing processes. In order to understand the complex phenomena that occur in such tanks, it is necessary to investigate flow field in the vessel. Most difficulty on the numerical analysis of stirred tank flow field focused particularly on free surface analysis. In order to decrease the dead zone and improve the flow efficiency of a system with free surface, this paper presents a new method that overcomes free surface effects by properly combining the benefits of using experiment and 3-D CFD. This method is applied to study the mixing flow in an agitated tank. From the results of experimental studies using the PIV (particle image velocimetry) system, the distribution of mixing flow including free surface are obtained. And these values that are expressed as a velocity vector field have been patched for simulating the free surface. The results of velocity distribution obtained by 3-D CFD are compared with those of experimental results. The experimental data and the simulation results are in good agreement.
A fully coupled finite element analysis (FEA) technique was developed for analyzing the discharge phenomena and dielectric liquid flow while considering surface charge density effects in dielectric flow guidance. In addition, the simulated speed of surface charge propagation was compared and verified with the experimental results shown in the literature. Recently, electrohydrodynamics (EHD) techniques have been widely applied to enhance the cooling performance of electromagnetic systems by utilizing gaseous or liquid media. The main advantage of EHD techniques is the non-contact and low-noise nature of smart control using an electric field. In some cases, flow can be achieved using only a main electric field source. The driving sources in EHD flow are ionization in the breakdown region and ionic dissociation in the sub-breakdown region. Dielectric guidance can be used to enhance the speed of discharge propagation and fluidic flow along the direction of the electric field. To analyze this EHD phenomenon, in this study, the fully coupled FEA was composed of Poisson's equation for an electric field, charge continuity equations in the form of the Nernst-Planck equation for ions, and the Navier-Stokes equation for an incompressible fluidic flow. To develop a generalized numerical technique for various EHD phenomena that considers fluidic flow effects including dielectric flow guidance, we examined the surface charge accumulation on a dielectric surface and ionization, dissociation, and recombination effects.
This paper provides a general overview of surface catalytic recombination in hypersonic flow. The surface catalytic recombination phenomena is elaborated in terms of its general overview and numerical modeling associated with it. The general overview of the surface catalytic recombination phenomena describes the elementary surface reactions for the surface catalytic and the role of the surface catalytic recombination efficiency in the heat transfer determination. In the numerical modeling, the surface catalytic recombination is described based on the stagnation-point boundary layer analysis, and finite-rate surface reaction modeling. Throughout this overview manuscript, a general understanding of this phenomena is obtained and can be used as foundation for deeper application with the numerical computational fluid dynamics (CFD) flow solver to estimate the surface heat transfer in the hypersonic vehicles.
This paper provides the numerical results of a simulation of the flow around a propeller working beneath the free surface. A finite volume method is used to solve the unsteady Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes (URANS) equations, where the wave-making problem is solved using a volume-of-fluid (VOF) method. The numerical analysis focuses on the propeller wake structure affected by the free surface, where we consider another free surface boundary condition that treats the free surface as a rigid wall surface. The propeller wake under the effect of these two free surface conditions shows a reduction in the magnitude of the longitudinal and vertical flow velocities, and its vortical structures strongly interact with the free surface. The thrust and torque coefficient under the free surface effect decrease about 3.7% and 3.1%, respectively. Finally, the present numerical results show a reasonable agreement with the available experimental data.
The frequency of urban floods is recently increased as a consequence of climate change and haphazard development in urban area. To mitigate and prevent the flood damage, we generally utilized a numerical model to investigate the causes and risk of urban flood. Contrary to general flood inundation model simulating only the surface flow, the model needs to consider flow of the sewer network system like SWMM and ILLUDAS. However, this kind of model can not consider the interaction between the surface flow and drainage network. Therefore, we tried to evaluate the impact of bidirectional interaction between sewer and surface flow in urban flooding analysis based on simulations using the quasi-interacted model and the interacted model. As a general quasi-interacted model, SWMM5 and FLUMEN are utilized to analyze the flow of drainage network and simulate the inundation area, respectively. Then, FLO-2D is introduced to consider the interaction between the surface flow and sewer system. The two method applied to the biggest flood event occurred in July 2011 in Sadang area, South Korea. Based on the comparison with observation data, we confirmed that the model considering the interaction the sewer network and surface flow, showed a good agreement than the quasi-interacted model.
This paper deals with an experimental study on the initial condition of liquid film surface waves disintegration and investigation on the behavior of liquid film surface waves formed by the high speed air flow on the solid plane surface. The authors conducted the qualitative and quantitative study to in vestigate the liquid film flow phenomena, the liquid film disintegration mechanism, and droplet formation process with breaking the liquid film surface wave. The newly devised transparent rectangular test section which has semi-two-dimensional flow at the center of the bottom was introduced to perform the experimental study, and it can generate the uniform thickness liquid film at the bottom. The strobo streak camera was used to obtain the instantaneously transformed photographs. The electronic measuring device was also used to measure the liquid film thickness variation in order to perform the easy and effective analysis of complex flow phenomena in the air-water cocurrent flow.
