A Study on the Causal Analysis of Electrical Fire by Using Fuse (퓨즈를 이용한 전기화재의 원인분석에 관한 연구)

  • This paper studied on the causal analysis of electrical fire by using fuse that it is used with safety device in electrical products. The experimental samples used are glass tube fuse(15 A, $5{\times}20mm$) and temperature fuse(10 A, $72^{\circ}C$). The experiment analyzed on the characteristics of damaged fuse by main causes(short circuit, overload, external flame) of electrical fire. The results showed, in case of glass tube fuse identified different characteristics in external form and element surface and element texture of damaged fuse by main causes of electrical fire. In case of temperature fuse identified different characteristics in external form and sliding contact surface and sliding contact texture of damaged fuse only by external flame.

Development of Loaded Stream Fire Extinguishing Systems for Underground Transmission Cables (지중송전선로 접속부용 미분무 강화액 소화설비의 개발연구)

  • Full-scale fire extinguishment tests were conducted to develop loaded stream fire extinguishing systems for protecting underground transmission cables. The dimension of test mock-up was 5.5m height${\times}3m$ width ${\times}6m$ length, and six 154kV OF cables were piled up. Gasoline was used to ignite cates. Linear heat detection cables were installed on top of 154 kV OF cable and discharge nozzles were installed on the top and sidewalls, respectively. As a result, both surface fires and deap-seated fires were extinguished successfully within the specified 3 minutes by discharging loaded stream agent.

  • This study was performed FE numerical analysis under 120-minute fire conditions, using the ABAQUS, a wide use software, on the basis of the test results by concrete tunnel lining fire strengths (ISO, RWS, and MHC). The concrete material test was to secure the material properties of concrete linings, which were numerical analysis input conditions. And then built the material properties, such as specific heat, heat transfer rate, heat expansion rate, density, elasticity coefficient and compression strength under high temperature conditions, as database at 20 $^{\circ}C$ to 800 $^{\circ}C$, applying them to analysis as input values. As a result, the tunnel linings under RWS fire conditions saw fire temperature rose to maximum 1119 $^{\circ}C$at the location of 5 mm above a thermal surface, and saw surface temperature amount to 1214 $^{\circ}C$ in the middle part.

An Experimental Study on the H-Beam Under Fire Load in Open Space

  • To validate the fire safety assessment of structures, many structural experiments under fire load have been conducted. However, most of these experiments were conducted in restricted environments, such as inside a furnace, and experiments were seldom carried out in open space. In this study, an experimental study on H-beams, frequently used as structural reinforcements, was carried out for validating the thermal-structural analysis method under development. A 1.8 MW burner fire was adopted with each end of the H-beam fixed without a mechanical load. Gas temperature, steel surface temperature, and displacements were then measured. During the experiment, gas and steel temperatures were obtained at 9 and 17 points near the H-beam, respectively. In addition, the vertical and horizontal displacements of the H-beam under fire load at 6 points were obtained. Furthermore, it was verified that the stable displacement measurements via the contact and non-contact methods were feasible in harsh environments where flames and smoke were both present.

  • This study evaluated the fire resisting capacity and post-fire serviceability of the concrete beams retrofitted by near surface mounted method(NSM) using GFRP plates. Main parameters in the test are grout materials and fire exposure. For the test, two types of grout materials between concrete substrate and GFRP plate were used; flame resisting epoxy and filling mortar. Four RC beam specimens were made and two of them were exposed to fire according to real scale fire curve proposed KS F 2257. After the fire exposure test, flexural test were performed to investigate the flexural performance of concrete beams including strength and deformation. From the test results, it was found that the beam retrofitted by NSM-GFRP presented higher flexural strength than that of the beam without retrofit, which indicates NSM-GFRP retrofit technologies is effective to maintain flexural strength even after fire exposure. In addition, the specimens grouted by epoxy showed good performance in strength but bad performance in ductility.

  • The objective of design for a post flash-over fire is contain the fire and prevent structural collapse, as necessary to meet the performance requirements. In the post flash-over phase of a fire all of the combustible objects in the compartment are burning and the heat release rate is limited either by the fuel surface area or the available air supply. So for the PBD situations, the process of evaluation method for fire phenomena is very important. It is the aim of this study to investigate and analyze the evaluation method of structural fire resistance in Japan.

  • In the case of fire, surface treatment agents used in external insulation finishing methods are substances that are vulnerable to fire due to thin finishes and the combustion of polymers. In this study, it was expected that the performance of surface preparation mortars could be improved by using expandable graphite with excellent thermal performance. Experimental results showed that the mechanical properties of surf ace preparation mortar were improved by using the fly ash and silica fume. Surface treatment materials using expanded graphite have a characteristic of expanding when a fire occurs. It has been shown that heat-swellable surface treatment materials can reduce the penetration of heat sources into the surface of synthetic insulation.

The Study on Experimental Method of Smoldering Ground Fire in Forest Fire (뒷불 특성에 관한 실험방법 연구)

  • A smoldering ground fire can be a probable cause of reignition of surface fire when transmitted from Fermentation layer to Humus layer with temperature higher than that of ignition. Purpose of this paper is to identify experimental methodology on the potential risk of a smoldering ground fire, which is similar to the real surface fuel bed, and its combustion characteristics. The fuel model designed in this study is composed of 3 layers such as Litter layer, Fermentation layer and Humus layer and 8 Thermocouples are set through 3 layer at each boundary and in between to detect the temperature change and duration of smoldering and propagation velocity. As a result, it was observed that ignition conditions in the boundary between L layer and F layer determined transmission and non-transmisstion to F-H layer. In addition, range of critical humidity at which a smoldering ground fire was transmitted in a material layer was 33~44% and when temperature exceeds $350^{\circ}C$, likelihood of transmission of a smoldering ground fire was high. In the research, the experimental model for multi-layer smoldering ground fire is suggested and information about propagation of smoldering fire, possibility of reignition according to moisture content, propagation velocity and temperature change are obtained, Also, the built-up methods were established to help analyze basic characteristics of smoldering ground fire.

Comparison of Surface Fuel and Soil Layer Moisture after Rainfall in Broad-Leaved Forest at Young Dong Region (영동지역 활엽수림에서의 강우 후 지표연료의 습도변화 분석)

  • The change in fuel moisture in accordance with the number of days after rainfall is an important factor in predicting forest fire dangers and supporting forest fire rangers. Therefore, in order to clear up these forest fire occurrence conditions, forest fire danger levels for surface fuel 0.6 cm or lower, 0.6~3.0 cm, 3.0~6.0 cm, and 6.0 cm or above by fallen leaves layer, humus layer, soil layer, and diameter after rainfall of 5.0 mm and higher in accordance with tree density in 2008, 2009 Spring/Autumn Young Dong region have been analyzed. Research showed an approximate 17 % fuel moisture which is a dangerous forest fire occurrence level after 5 days from rainfall in medium-density areas and 3 days after rainfall in loose-density areas of Spring time in the fallen leaves layer. On the other hand, the humus layer showed a 40 % or higher fuel humidity even after 6 days from rainfall regardless of the season, while the upper and lower parts of the soil layer had a little change. In loose-density areas with 0.6 cm or less surface fuel per diameter in Spring time, the fuel humidity displayed a dangerous level in fire forest occurrence after 3 days, and 4days in medium-density areas, and for loose-density areas with 0.6~3.0 cm surface fuel per diameter in Autumn time it showed a dangerous level in forest fire occurrence after 3 days, and for medium-density areas, 5 days. In the case of 3.0~6.0 cm of fuel moisture per diameter in both Spring and Autumn times, even after 6 days, low and medium-density areas showed that they maintain fuel moisture and therefore the dangers of forest fires were very low, and in the case of 6.0 cm or higher, it showed 25 % or higher fuel moisture even after 6 days from rainfall regardless of the season.
