  • Estimation of the taxi-out and taxi-in times of aircraft on a airport surface is one of the essential features of Departure Manager (DMAN). Especially for an airport with multiple runways and large ramp areas, estimation of the taxi-out and taxi-in times are mainly dependent on the taxi routes on airport surface. This paper described the method of automatic extraction of the the taxi routes using the ASDE track data and the Dijkstra algorithm based on the node-link model of a airport surface movements. In addition, we analyzed the ground operation status of Incheon International Airport using the extracted taxi routes.

  • A three-dimensional primitive equation model (POM) and the buoy data (2900 N, 13500 E) from the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) for 27 typhoons between 1982 and 2000 are used to investigate the sea surface cooling (SSC) that accompanies typhoons in the northwestern Pacific. Observed sea surface temperatures (SSTs) rapidly drop 0.6 to 4.3 C, and SSC continues for several weeks after the passage of a typhoon. The model, which covers most of the northwestern Pacific ($24^{\circ}N$ to $52^{\circ}N$), simulated Typhoon Abby over the tropical Pacific, and successfully reproduces many observed features, including the pattern of SST decrease, inertial oscillations, etc. The model accurately simulated the SSC process, suggesting that the cyclonic eddy with a radius of a few hundred kilometers that trailed Typhoon Abby plays an important role in SSC.

  • In this work, the discharge characteristics and temporal distribution of surface charges on the Sidoped MgO have been investigated and elucidated with the results of photon-induced surface current. Even though the Si doped MgO shows lower static voltage margin, higher luminous efficacy, and shorter statistical delay time, its discharge characteristics become deteriorated as the timing of scanning is delayed from the ramp type reset pulse down. Overall features of Si-doped MgO in discharge characteristics are well correlated with surface current characteristics.

  • In the planetary surface exploration , micro-rovers or nano-rovers are very attractive choices for a surface exploration system providing mobility functions and other features required in the surface probe missions at small mass and relatively small cost. This paper surveys and summarizes the requirements for Mars exploration rovers in micro or nano scale and outlines the control concepts for navigation including the obstacle/hazard avoidance and the path planning. In this context, autonomous reaction capabilities are the key elements to control design in conjunction with the remote control schemes to deal with the significant signal propagation delays. Other navigation and control aspects such as the instrument fine positioning and the flip-over of the rovers are also briefly introduced. The current technical limitations of the micro- and nano-rovers are summarized.

  • In this study an image processing system is designed and developed, which can detect and assort some defects on the surface of an object moving with high speed. For real time surface detection of high speed moving object, the fast processing should be managed and the image information including some surface features should be captured. It is difficult to acquire the noise free image due to various light sources and high speed moving materials under the environment of the general industrial site. In general, because pre-processing methods are employed for getting a noise free feature, the image processing speed has some limitation and the expensive image processing devices are required. • A digital wave tank (DWT) simulation technique has been developed by authors to investigate the interactions of fully nonlinear waves with 3D marine structures. A finite-difference/volume method and a modified marker-and-cell (MAC) algorithm have been used, which are based on the Navier-Stokes (NS) and continuity equations. The fully nonlinear kinematic free-surface condition is implemented by the marker-density function (MDF) technique or the Level-Set (LS) technique developed for one or two fluid layers. In this paper, some applications for various engineering problems with free-surface are introduced and discussed. It includes numerical simulation of marine environments by simulation equipments, fully nonlinear wave motions around offshore structures, nonlinear ship waves, ship motions in waves and marine flow simulation with free-surface. From the presented simulations, it seems that the developed DWT simulation technique can handle various engineering problems with free-surface and reliably predict hydrodynamic features due to the fully-nonlinear wave motions interacting with such marine structures.

  • Life-cycle performance and maintaining cost predictions are required for the effective management for bridges. In Korea, the importance of management of bridges has been recognized over the past two decades, resulting in the development of databases and various bridge management support tools by both government and private sectors. However, none of these tools has truly included the expected features of the bridge management system (EMS) for the next generation such as the quantification of the effects of maintenance interventions on bridge condition and safety. In this paper, a novel quantification process to simulate the life-cycle performance of steel box bridges has been developed. The process is based on the Response Surface method. Various performance-related variables aloe investigated to identify a set of significant design variables to construct the response surfaces.

  • The objective of this paper is to compare the surface features of two kinds of nano-porous activated carbon fiber (NPACF) treated with potassium and the variation of their properties by phosphoric acid pre-treatment. X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns indicate that NPACF containing potassium species show better performance for potassium and potassium salts by pre-treatment with phosphoric acid. In order to present the causes of the differences in surface properties and specific surface area after the samples were treated with phosphoric acid, pore structure and surface morphology are investigated by adsorption analysis and SEM. For the chemical composition microanalysis for potassium loading of the NPACF pre-treated with phosphoric acid, samples were analyzed by EDX. Finally, the type and quality of oxygen groups are determined from the method proposed by Boehm.

  • The safe navigation of a mobile robot requires the recognition of the environment in terms of vision processing. To be guided in the given path, the robot should acquire the information about where the wall and corridor are located. Also unexpected obstacles should be detected as rapid as possible for the safe obstacle avoidance. In the paper, we assume that the mobile robot should be navigated in the flat surface. In terms of this assumption we simplify the correspondence problem by the free navigation surface and matching features in that coordinate system. Basically, the vision processing system adopts line segment of edge as the feature. The extracted line segments of edge out of both image are matched in the free nevigation surface. According to the matching result, each line segment is labeled by the attributes regarding obstacle and free surface and the 3D shape of obstacle is interpreted. This proposed vision processing method is verified in terms of various simulations and experimentation using real images.

  • A study on the species description, enumeration and interspecific relationships of genus Filipendula was undertaken for four Korean and two Japanese species. The use of scanning electron miroscope(SEM) has made possible a detailed study of foliar trichomes, pollen grains and fruit surface features. A new method for the preparation of SEM samples was developed in this study. Filipendula glaberrima, F. formosa, and F. korean were reliable endemic species. Among them, F. glaberrima shares many characteristics with F. formosa. F. gloaberrima can be divided into tow types based on leaf, seed, flower and pollen characters. Type I is characterized by ciliated fruits, many branched vascular bundles on the petal, dense trichomes on the leaf vein of abaxial surface, and many foveolate pollen surface. Type II possesses glabrous fruits, a few vascular bundles on the petal, rare trichomes on the leaf vein and a few foveolate pollen surface. The significant taxonomic characteristics in the classification of genus Filipendula are their lengths of fruit stalks, the densities of marginal trichomes of fruits, and textures of stipules.
