An experimental study has been performed to investigate the forming characteristics of pre-coated metals(PCMs) widely used in domestic appliances through Erichsen tests and deep drawing tests. Erichsen tests are performed to find out the forming limits of seven pre-coated metals in normal conditions. Rectangular deep-drawing tests are carried out to know the effects of die materials and blank metals on forming loads and surface defects of final PCM products. In the deep-drawing test, four die materials [STD11(TiCN), STD11, STD11(TD), AMPCO] are used. In the Erichsen test, the forming limits of PCMs are obtained from flaking or crack of pre-coated films and lower than those of base metals. In respect of surface roughness and forming load, STD11(TD) and AMPCO materials are superior to my other die-materials used in the deep-drawing test.
A computer-aided process planning system for rotationally symmetric deep drawing products has been developed. The application for non-axisymmetric components, however, has been reported yet. Therefore, this study investigates process sequence design in deep drawing process and constructs a computer-aided process planning system for non-axisymmetric motor frame products with elliptical shape. The system developed consists of three modules. The first one os a 3-dimensional modeling module to calculate surface area for non-axisymmetric products. The second one is a blank design module that creates an oval-shaped blank with the identical surface area. The third one is a process planning module based on production rules that play the best important roles in an expert system for manufacturing. The production rules are generated and upgraded by interviewing with field engineers. Especially, drawing coefficient, punch and die radii are considered as main design parameters. The constructed system for elliptical deep drawing products would be very useful to reduce lead time and improve accuracy for production.
The effect of drawing rate on the electrochemical properties of 3003 Al alloys in 5 wt.% NaCl solution was investigated by electrochemical techniques (potentiodynamic polarization test, potentiostatic polarization test, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS)) and surface analyses (OM, SEM, EDS). Four kinds of automotive pipe materials were prepared (raw material, drawing rate = 5, 10, 15%). As the drawing rate of Al alloy tube increased, the pitting corrosion resistance increased due to the enrichment of Al oxides on the surface.
This research works on the effects of drawing conditions on the physical properties of the drawn worsted yarns. The drawn worsted yarns were made by the yarn drawing system under various drawing conditions such as concentration of reducing agent, draw ratio, setting time of drawn yarn, and concentration of oxidizing agent. The drawn worsted yarns from 2/80Nm to 2/90Nm were obtained from 2/60Nm worsted yarns, the surface and cross-sectional shapes and tensile properties of these various specimens were measured and discussed with the various drawing conditions. The drawing of worsted yarn made constituent wool fiber scratched and made it changing to polygonal cross-sectional shape. The tenacity and modulus were increased with draw ratio and concentration of reducing agent. And tensile strain was increased with draw ratio, which decreased with concentration of reducing agent.
Hot stamping is an effective and suitable process widely used in automotive applications, though critical issues such as the transfer of the coating materials and build-up of these materials on tool surfaces have been encountered. Past researches figured out the resultant wear phenomenon using pin-on-disc and drawing (for example, strip drawing and deep drawing) methods to mimic the process and analyzed the wear behavior with respect to the influencing factors such as surface coating, load, and roughness. Although the pin-on-disc is a conventional and widely-used method, it presented a methodological limitation when simulating the hot stamping process by forming a new blank each time, and hence, a drawing-based friction method has been proposed and developed. Each drawing method applies loads in a different way, resulting in a different wear behavior. Notably, the deep drawing process is most similar to the hot stamping process compared to other drawing methods. In this paper we present a review of the friction testing methods mimicking the hot stamping process and the associated wear behavior. This can be helpful in presenting a step-by-step approach and different perspectives on the wear behavior in the hot stamping process.
In the current study, the effect of small surface defects in the starting material including roughness, indentations, or scratches, which are perpendicular to the direction of drawing, on the product quality is investigated using the finite element method. An axisymmetric defect is assumed. Such defects are defined by a cylindrical defect area and two tapered regions connecting the defect area to the non-defective area of the material. Various conditions for these initial surface defects are considered, including defect depth, defect slope and defect length. To describe the plastic deformation of the defect in detail during the simulation, local remeshing is applied. Based on the finite element results, defect disappearance maps were generated. It was found that defect disappearance is significantly dependent on the defect depth and the defect length coupled with the defect slope.
In wire drawing, aterial deformation is concentrated on the surface of the drawn wire because of surface contact with the drawing die. Therefore, strain varies from the center to the surface of the drawn wire. In this study, based on the upper bound method, an effective strain prediction method from the center to the surface of a drawn wire was proposed. Using the proposed method, the effective strain of the drawn wire was calculated verify the proposed prediction method, the predicted effective strain was compared with the result of finite element analysis.
In the field of shipbuilding design, the use of 3D CAD is becoming commonplace, and most of the large shipyards are conducting 3D design. However at the production site, workers are still working on 2D drawings rather than 3D models. This tendency is even worse in small-scale shipyards and block manufacturing shops. Particularly, in a manufacturing shop that is engaged in the outsourcing of blocks, it may not be possible to provide 3D model. However, the demand for 3D models in the production field is steadily increasing. Therefore, it would be helpful if 3D model could be generated from a 2D drawing. In this paper, we propose a method to extract template and unfolded surface shape information from shell template offset drawing using computer vision technology. Also a 3D surface model was reconstructed and visualized from the extracted information. The result of this study is thought to be helpful in the work environment where 3D model information can not be obtained.
Paneling building facades is one of the essential procedures in building construction. Traditionally, it has been an easy task of simply projecting paneling patterns drawn in drawing boards onto 3d building facades. However, as many organic or curved building shapes are designed and constructed in modern architectural practices, the traditional one-to-one projection is becoming obsolete for the building types of the kind. That is primarily because of the geometrical discrepancies between 2d drawing boards and 3d curved building surfaces. In addition, curved compound surfaces are often utilized to accommodate the complicated spatial programs, building codes, and zoning regulations or to achieve harmonious geometrical relationships with neighboring buildings in highly developed urban contexts. The use of the compound surface apparently makes the traditional paneling pattern projection more challenging. Various mapping technics have been introduced to deal with the inabilities of the projection methods for curved facades. The mapping methods translate geometries on a 2d surface into a 3d building façade at the same topological locations rather than relying on Euclidean or Affine projection. However, due to the intrinsic differences of the planar 2d and curved 3d surfaces, the mapping often comes with noticeable distortions of the paneling patterns. Thus, this paper proposes a practical method of drawing paneling patterns directly on a curved compound surface utilizing Geodesic, which is faithful to any curved surface, to minimize unnecessary distortions.
Wet wire drawing of brass coated steel wire, used for tire reinforcement, is realized with Tungsten Carbide(WC) dies sintered with a cobalt(Co) binder. Dies wear represents an important limitation to the production process and cost savings. Several parameters, such as Co content, WC grain size of tungsten carbide, sintering conditions, and so on, affect on the wear of the drawing die. In this study, the effect of the diamond abrasive particle size on the life of the WC centered dies of the wet wire drawing was investigated. Wet wire drawing experiments were carried out on a wet wire drawing machine. From the experiments, the dies life, dies fracture, wire surface roughness, and wire breaks were investigated. From the results, it was found that the wear of the WC dies increased with the increase in the diamond abrasive particle size.
