The aerodynamic characteristics of large transport vehicle has become more and more important in recent vehicle design to improve driving performance in high speed cruising and raise the product valve with regard to a comfortable driving condition. Hence, detailed knowledge of the flow field around truck coner vane is essential to improve fuel efficiency and reduce the dirt contamination on vehicle body surface. In this study, three-dimensional flow characteristics around corner vane attached to truck cabin were computed for the steady, incompressible, and high speed viscous flow, adopting the RNG k-$\varepsilon$ turbulence model. In order to investigate the influence of configuration and structure of corner vane, computations were carried out for four cases at a high Reynolds number, Re=4.1$\times$106 (based on the cabin height). The global flow patterns, drag coefficient and the distributions such as velocity magnitude, turbulent kinetic energy around the corner vane, were examined. As a result of this study, we could identify the flow characteristics around corner vane for the variation of corner vane length and width. Also, suggest the improved structure to reduce the dirt contamination in cabin side.
This study investigated interactions between the internal-external wave field of a permeable coastal structure consisting of rubble. The study examined the application criteria of an existing numerical model (CADMAS-SURF V.4.0) and proposed a modified method to provide reasonable results. In particular, the study focused on and emphasized the water surface profiles in front of a structure, wave run-up/run-down on a slope, and internal water level fluctuations due to the drag coefficient and porosity of a rubble mound structure. In conclusion, the result show that when the vertical fluctuations of the internal water levels in permeable coastal structures exhibited high-quality representation. Sane responses can be seen for wave run-up/run-down characteristics on its slopes.

A simple analytical model of rarefied channel flow is developed to predict the compression ratio in a helical drag pump. If the surface velocity is zero, the model reduces to a capillary leaks. Predictions of our model agree well with the Knudsen's data for capillary leaks in transition flow, in addition to giving a good account of the Knudsen minimum. Also, the present results are compared with experimental data, and good agreement is obtained over the entire pressure range from molecular to slip flow.
This computational investigation of micro-sized particle dispersion concerns the fume particle contamination over target surface in high-precision laser line machining process of semiconductor and display device materials. Employing the random sampling based on probabilistic fume particle generation distributions, the effects of sphericity for nonspherical fume particles are analyzed for the fume particle dispersion and contamination near the laser machining line. The drag coefficient correlation for nonspherical particles in a low Reynolds number regime is selected and utilized for particle trajectory simulations after drag model validation. When compared to the corresponding results by the assumption of spherical fume particles, the sphericity of nonspherical fume particles show much less dispersion and contamination characteristics and it also significantly affects the particle removal rate in a suction air flow patterns.
The iterative boundary element method (IBEM) developed originally before for cavitating two-dimensional (2-D) and three-dimensional (3-D) hydrofoils moving under free surface is modified and applied to the case of 2-D (two-dimensional) airfoils and 3-D (three-dimensional) wings over water. The calculation of the steady-state flow characteristics of an inviscid, incompressible fluid past 2-D airfoils and 3-D wings above free water surface is of practical importance for air-assisted marine vehicles such as some racing boats including catamarans with hydrofoils and WIG (Wing-In-Ground) effect crafts. In the present paper, the effects of free surface both on 2-D airfoils and 3-D wings moving steadily over free water surface are investigated in detail. The iterative numerical method (IBEM) based on the Green's theorem allows separating the airfoil or wing problems and the free surface problem. Both the 2-D airfoil surface (or 3-D wing surface) and the free surface are modeled with constant strength dipole and constant strength source panels. While the kinematic boundary condition is applied on the airfoil surface or on the wing surface, the linearized kinematic-dynamic combined condition is applied on the free surface. The source strengths on the free surface are expressed in terms of perturbation potential by applying the linearized free surface conditions. No radiation condition is enforced for downstream boundary in 2-D airfoil and 3-D wing cases and transverse boundaries in only 3-D wing case. The method is first applied to 2-D NACA0004 airfoil with angle of attack of four degrees to validate the method. The effects of height of 2-D airfoil from free surface and Froude number on lift and drag coefficients are investigated. The method is also applied to NACA0015 airfoil for another validation with experiments in case of ground effect. The lift coefficient with different clearance values are compared with those of experiments. The numerical method is then applied to NACA0012 airfoil with the angle of attack of five degrees and the effects of Froude number and clearance on the lift and drag coefficients are discussed. The method is lastly applied to a rectangular 3-D wing and the effects of Froude number on wing performance have been investigated. The numerical results for wing moving under free surface have also been compared with those of the same wing moving above free surface. It has been found that the free surface can affect the wing performance significantly.

This paper investigates the effects of Reynolds number (Re) on the aerodynamic characteristics of a twin-deck bridge. A 1:36 scale sectional model of a twin girder bridge was tested using the Wall of Wind (WOW) open jet wind tunnel facility at Florida International University (FIU). Static tests were performed on the model, instrumented with pressure taps and load cells, at high wind speeds with Re ranging from $1.3{\times}10^6$ to $6.1{\times}10^6$ based on the section width. Results show that the section was almost insensitive to Re when pitched to negative angles of attack. However, mean and fluctuating pressure distributions changed noticeably for zero and positive wind angles of attack while testing at different Re regimes. The pressure results suggested that with the Re increase, a larger separation bubble formed on the bottom surface of the upstream girder accompanied with a narrower wake region. As a result, drag coefficient decreased mildly and negative lift coefficient increased. Flow modification due to the Re increase also helped in distributing forces more equally between the two girders. The bare deck section was found to be prone to vortex shedding with limited dependence on the Re. Based on the observations, vortex mitigation devices attached to the bottom surface were effective in inhibiting vortex shedding, particularly at lower Re regime.

This paper describes on the aerodynamic characteristics of the first domestically manufactured aircraft, Buhwalho, in Korea. The computational fluid dynamics(CFD) calculations and wind tunnel test were utilized to investigate the basic aerodynamic characteristics of aircraft with control surface deflections and attitude changes. Variations of lift, drag and pitching moment due to angles of attack and control surface deflections were analyzed and also flight stability due to side force, yawing and rolling moments caused by the change of sideslip angles, rudder and aileron deflections were discussed. Through this study, the meaningful aerodynamic data by CFD calculations and wind tunnel tests were obtained and the flight characteristics based on these data were confirmed accordingly by the flight tests.
Wake-induced aerodynamics of yawed circular cylinders with smooth and grooved surfaces in a tandem arrangement was studied. This pair of cylinders represent sections of stay-cables with smooth surfaces and high-voltage power conductors with grooved surfaces that are vulnerable to flow-induced structural failure. The study provides some insight for a better understanding of wake-induced loads and galloping problem of bundled cables. All experiments in this study were conducted using a pair of stationary section models of circular cylinders in a wind tunnel subjected to uniform and smooth flow. The aerodynamic force coefficients and vortex-shedding frequency of the downstream model were extracted from the surface pressure distribution. For measurement, polished aluminum tubes were used as smooth cables; and hollow tubes with a helically grooved surface were used as power conductors. The aerodynamic properties of the downstream model were captured at wind speeds of about 6-23 m/s (Reynolds number of 5×104 to 2.67×105 for smooth cable and 2×104 to 1.01×105 for grooved cable) and yaw angles ranging from 0° to 45° while the upstream model was fixed at the various spacing between the two model cylinders. The results showed that the Strouhal number of yawed cable is less than the non-yawed case at a given Reynolds number, and its value is smaller than the Strouhal number of a single cable. Additionally, compared to the single smooth cable, it was observed that there was a reduction of drag coefficient of the downstream model, but no change in a drag coefficient of the downstream grooved case in the range of Reynolds number in this study.

Direct numerical simulation are performed in order to investigate the effect of the circular cylinder shape on the forced convection around a circular cylinder at the Reynolds number of 300 and Prandtl number of 0.71. Three-dimensional characteristics of fluid flow and heat transfer around the smooth, wavy and torsional cylinders are investigated. A wavy cylinder has the sinusoidal variation in the cross sectional area along the spanwise direction with the wave length of ${\pi}/3$ and wavy amplitude of 0.1. A torsional cylinder has the twisted elliptic cross section with a torsional period of ${\pi}/2$ and an axis ratio of 1.35 corresponding to the major axis of 1.15 and the minor axis of 0.85. The value of time-and surface-averaged drag coefficient for the smooth cylinder is similar to that for the wavy cylinder, but larger than that for the torsional cylinder. The time and surface-averaged lift coefficient for the smooth cylinder is larger than that for the wavy and torsional cylinders. The time-averaged local heat transfer rate for the wavy and torsional cylinders shows different distribution along the circumferential direction, compared to that for the smooth cylinder because of the shape change in the spanwise direction for the cases of the wavy and torsional cylinders.

Study of flow behavior within rod bundles has been an active topic. Surface modification technologies are important parts of the design of the fourth generation reactor, which can increase the strength of the secondary flow within the rod bundle lattices. Quasi-periodic large-scale vortex structure (QLVS) is introduced by arranging micro ribs on the surface of rod bundles, which enhanced the scale of the secondary flow between the rod bundle lattices. Using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and water experiments, the flow field distribution and drag coefficient of the rod-bundle lattices are studied. The secondary flow between the micro-ribbed rod-bundle lattice is significantly enhanced compared to the standard rod-bundle lattice. The numerical simulation results agree well with the experimental results.
