Al6061 aluminum alloy specimens were exposed to atmospheric conditions for maximum 24 months. 24-month exposure specimen showed some more frequent and larger size of corrosion products and pitting on the surface compared with the 12-month exposure specimens. The XRD examination revealed the dominant surface oxide phases of Al2O3 and Al(OH)3. The oxide thickness at uniform oxidation (or non-pitting) region was not much changed over exposure time. The 1.2 ㎛ deep oxygen penetration area was found in the 12-months exposed specimen near the thin uniform aluminum oxide film. The line-EDS was conducted through the penetration regions and non-penetrated grain boundary. There were signs of O and Si concentration through the penetration region, whereas non-penetration region showed no concentration of O or Si. It was confirmed that pitting is a more severe degradation mode in Al6061 (max. >4 ㎛ deep) compared with the uniform oxidation (max. ~200 nm deep) up to 24-months exposure.
As a preliminary study to produce functional nanocomposites in a heat dissipation device, we performed the direct synthesis of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) on the surface of alumina (Al2O3) powders. A thermal chemical vapor deposition (TCVD) system was used to grow CNTs directly on the Al2O3 surface. In order to investigate the growth behavior of CNTs, we varied both furnace temperature of the TCVD ranging from 700 to 850 ℃ and concentration of the ferritin-dissolved DI solution from 0.1 to 2.0 mg/mL. From the previous results, the gas composition and duration time for CNT growth were fixed as C2H4 : H2 = 30 : 500 (vol. %) and 10 min, respectively. Based on the analysis results, the optimized growth temperature and ferritin concentration were found to be 825 ℃ and 0.5 mg/mL, respectively. The obtained results could be adopted to achieve mass production of nanocomposites with heat dissipation functionality.
The LiBr aqueous solution, which is the absorption liquid of absorption refrigerator, must be replaced periodically because the concentration of impurities such as Cu2+, Fe2+, Ca2+, etc., increases due to corrosion of the tubes as the period of use increases, and the refrigeration efficiency decreases significantly. In order to reuse the waste absorption liquid, flocculation-precipitation method is mainly applied to precipitate the impurities, which requires hundreds of times the concentration of impurities and generates additional waste. In this study, a process for removing Cu ion impurities from cyclone electrolyzer by electrolytic reduction is presented in a small-scale facility without additional waste. It was confirmed that Cu ion impurities can be removed down to 1 ppm by electrolytic reduction process, and to further improve the removal rate, the mass transfer rate was increased by using a cyclone electrolyzer. The removal rate of Cu ions increased with the increase of flow rate and current density, and it was confirmed that Cu was removed at a rate of 1.48 ppm/h under the condition of 330 mL/sec and 2.5 mA/cm2.
This study presents an eco-friendly and one-step finishing method for modifying fiber property that reduces fiber damage in wool/polyester blend fabrics. Lipase from aspergillus oryzae is used in this experiment. The enzymatic treatment condition is optimized by measuring the relative activity of lipase depending on pH level, temperature, concentration of lipase, and treatment time. The concentration of $CaCl_2$as an activator is determined by the characteristics including whiteness, water contact angle (WCA), and dyeing property. The modified properties of lipase treated fabrics are tested for pill resistance and surface morphology. The results are described as follows: the optimum condions for lipase treatment constitute a pH level of 8.0, treatment temperature of 40$^{\circ}$$_C$, concentration of lipase at 100% (o.w.f), and a treatment time of 90 minutes. $CaCl_2$helps in raising lipase activation, and the optimum concentration is 50mM. The whiteness, wet ability, and pill resistance of lipase treated fabrics improves as compared to the control. The dyeing property of lipase treated fabrics improved by 53.5% after using the one-bath dyeing method. This means that lipase treatment can save time and cost during the dyeing process since lipase treatment modifies wool and polyester fibers. The surface of lipase treated wool fibers do not exhibit any change, however voids and cracks manifest on the surface of lipase treated polyester fibers.
Electrodialysis (ED) is known to be a useful membrane process for desalination, concentration, separation, and purification in many fields. In this process, it is desirable to work at high current density in order to achieve fast desalination with the lowest possible effective membrane area. In practice, however, operating currents are restricted by the occurrence of concentration polarization phenomena. Many studies showed the occurrence of a limiting current density (LCD). The limiting current density in the electrodialysis process is an important parameter which determines the electrical resistance and the current utilization. Therefore, its reliable determination is required for designing an efficient electrodialysis plant. The purpose of this study is the development of a predictive model of the limiting current density in an electrodialysis process using response surface methodology (RSM). A two-factor central composite design (CCD) of RSM was used to analyze the effect of operation conditions (the initial salt concentration (C) and the linear flow velocity of solution to be treated (u)) on the limiting current density and to establish a regression model. All experiments were carried out on synthetic brackish water solutions using a laboratory scale electrodialysis cell. The limiting current density for each experiment was determined using the Cowan-Brown method. A suitable regression model for predicting LCD within the ranges of variables used was developed based on experimental results. The proposed mathematical quadratic model was simple. Its quality was evaluated by regression analysis and by the Analysis Of Variance, popularly known as the ANOVA.
Steam explosion was applied to extract phenolic compounds from oak wood (Quercus mongolica). The effects of three independent factors (ethanol concentration, extraction temperature and extraction time) on the total phenolic content, DPPH radical scavenging activity, and antimicrobial activity from the steam exploded oak wood were optimized using response surface methodology (RSM). The independent variables were coded at three levels and their actual values were selected on the basis of preliminary experimental results. The following optimal extraction conditions were selected: ethanol concentration 82.0%, extraction temperature $71.7^{\circ}C$, and extraction time 60.5 min for total phenolic content; ethanol concentration 78.3%, extraction temperature $70.3^{\circ}C$, and extraction time 57.6 min for DPPH radical scavenging activity; ethanol concentration 80.6%, extraction temperature $68.4^{\circ}C$, and extraction time 59.0 min for antimicrobial activity. The experimental values agreed with those were predicted within confidence intervals indicating the suitability of RSM in optimizing the ethanol extraction of phenolic compounds from the steam exploded oak wood. Under the optimized conditions, the experimental value of the total phenolic content was 111.8 mg GAE/g dry steam exploded oak wood, DPPH free radical scavenging activity was 65.7%, and antimicrobial activity was 17.0 mm, and those are reasonably close to the predicted values (109.2 mg GAE/g dry steam exploded oak wood, 62.3% and 15.9 mm, respectively).
This study has been performed to clarify the characteristics of temporal and spatial distribution of surface ozone concentration over Jeju Island, one of the cleanest areas in Korea with low emissions of air pollutants. Ozone data are monitored at four sites in Jeju Island. These monitoring sites are located at two urban area(referred to Ido and Donghong), coastal area(Gosan site) and forest site(Chuna site). Ozone data has been routinely collected at these sites for the late four years. The patterns of seasonal cycle of ozone concentrations at all stations show the bimodal with the peaks on spring and autumn and a significant summer minimum. However, the patterns of diurnal variations at rural station, i.e., Gosan and Chuna sites are considerably different to those at urban stations such as Ido and Donghong sites. The patterns of $\DeltaO_3$ variations are very similar with those of monthly mean ozone concentrations and $\DeltaO_3$ values are exceeded 30 ppb, at urban stations. This may be that urban stations are more influenced by local photochemical reactions rather than rural stations. In order to assess the potential roles of meteorological parameters on ozone formation, the meteorological parameters, such as radiation, temperature, and wind are monitored together with ozone concentrations at all stations. The relationships of meteorological parameters to the corresponding ozone concentration are found to be insignificant in Jeju Island. However, at Gosan and Donghong stations, when the sea breeze blew toward the station, the ozone concentration is considerably increased.
The purposes of this study were to analyze the microstructural and compositional changes of metal surfaces following different conditions of preoxidizing heat treatment, to investigate the composition of metal oxides, and to evaluate the effect of preoxidation and removal of surface oxides on microstructure and diffusion profiles. The techniques of EDAX (energy-dispersive analysis of x-ray), ESCA (electron spectroscopy for chemical analysis), and EPMA (electron probe micro analysis) were used, along with SEM (scanning electron microscopy). The obtained results were as follows : 1. A surface of the specimen became rough and the amount of the metal oxides increased with increasing the heat treatment time and temperature and the partial pressure of oxygen. 2. At an air pressure of 28' vacuum, the higher the temperature and the longer the time of preoxidation, the higher Ni concentration was detected. 3. Cr concentration in the specimen heat treated with air was higher than that of with vacuum. 4. The oxides in the specimens were mainly composed of Ni and Cr oxides. On the globular growth particles, significant rises in Al concentration of Rexillium III and Ti concentration of Verabond were noted. 5. Atomic diffusion occurred at the ceramic-metal interface, furthermore the amount of the flux was increased with preoxidation heat treatment.
This experimental design and response surface methodology (RSM) have been applied to the investigation of the electrocoagulation/flotation of dye wastewater. The electrocoagulation/flotation reactions were mathematically described as a function of parameters current (A), NaCl concentration (B), initial RhB concentration (C) and time (D) being modeled by use of the central composite design (CCD). The application of RSM using the CCD yielded the following regression equation, which is an empirical relationship between the RhB removal (%) and test variables in RhB removal (%) = $-300.42+129.21{\cdot}Current+46.99{\cdot}NaCl-0.11{\cdot}RhB-+43.71{\cdot}Time-5.67{\cdot}Current{\cdot}NaCl-3.18{\cdot}Current{\cdot}Time-2.41{\cdot}NaCl{\cdot}Time-19.79{\cdot}Current^2-2.27{\cdot}NaCl^2-1.59{\cdot}Time^2$. the model predictions agreed well with the experimentally observed result ($R^{2}=0.9728$). The estimated ridge of maximum response and optimal conditions for RhB removal (%) using canonical analysis was 99.4% (A: 1,77 A, NaCl concentration: 2.23 g/L, RhB concentration: 56.12 mg/L, Time: 9.98 min). To confirm this optimum condition, three additional experiments were performed and RhB removal (%) were within range of 86.87% (95% PI low)~111.93% (95% PI high) obtained.
