  • In this paper, the theoretical background and the specific implementation method of a compressive receiver for RFID signal detection as well as the design method of DDL(Dispersive Delay Line) and chirp LO are described. DDL, which is one of the main components of the compressive receiver, is designed to have $13{\mu}s$ dispersive delay time and 6 MHz bandwidth using the SAW technique based on $LiNbO_3$ material. The chirp LO is designed using DDS(Direct Digital Synthesizer). Also the compressive receiver is fabricated to be installed into the RFID reader. Test results show the maximum frequency error of 25 kHz for single signal input, the receiver sensitivity of -44 dBm, and the maximum frequency error is 75 kHz for 6 multi-tone input signals. These results indicate that the fabricated compressive receiver is working well even in dense RFID operating environments.

  • Gas-sensor array technology, which has been much utilized in the field of food technology by the name of 'electronic nose' is drawing attention in diagnosing lung cancer based on the analysis of the exhaled human breath. Much understanding has been accomplished about the composition of the volatile organic compounds (VOCs) of the human exhaled breath, in spite of some variations depending on research groups due mainly to lack of the standardization of the sensing procedures. Since VOCs may be produced during the process of cellular metabolism, difference in the cellular metabolism between healthy cells and lung cancer cells are expected to be reflected on the composition variation of the exhaled VOCs. Several studies have attempted to apply the gas-sensor array technology to lung cancer analysis using many different types of sensors including metal oxide, carbon black-polymer composite, surface acoustic wave, and gold nanoparticles. In this mini-review VOC as biomarkers, sensor array technology and application of the array technology for the diagnosis of cancer disease have been described.

  • Generally, SAW device, which uses Time Domain Sampling, requires high speed A/D converter because SAW device using TDS needs high sampling speed as much as its high data speed. However, the high price of A/D converter discourages makers from using it. On the other hand, SAW device, which uses Frequency Domain Sampling, does not required high speed A/D converter because SAW device using FDS does not need high sampling speed. It is very efficient in price comparison to its performance because high processing speed of SAW device using FDS can be implemented using low price Embedded Systems. The purpose of the paper is to solve the issues above by designing and realizing SAW device(FDS) using SAW sensor for TDS.

  • The inductively coupled plasma(ICP) etching process was selected to fabricate RF Surface Acoustic Wave(SAW) filters and a Pt thin film was sputtered on a $LiTaO_3$ substrate applied to electrode materials to reduce the spurious response and improve the power durability. Steep sidewall pattern was achieved employing $C_4F_8/Ar/Cl_2$ gas chemistry. We investigated an etching mechanism and parameter dependence of the Pt thin film about $C_4F_8$ addition. Sidewall etch angle was about $80^{\circ}$ at the $C_4F_8$ 20% mixing ratio. Fabricated SAW filter is consists of some series and parallel arm SAW resonators which work as impedance elements and show capacitance characteristics at out of the passband. It can be modified for $800{\sim}900\;MHz$ RF filters. External matching circuits were unnecessary.

  • The Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute has developed an advanced fast reactor concept, KALIMER-600, which satisfies the Generation IV reactor design goals of sustainability, economics, safety, and proliferation resistance. The concept enables an efficient utilization of uranium resources and a reduction of the radioactive waste. The core design has been developed with a strong emphasis on proliferation resistance by adopting a single enrichment fuel without blanket assemblies. In addition, a passive residual heat removal system, shortened intermediate heat-transport system piping and seismic isolation have been realized in the reactor system design as enhancements to its safety and economics. The inherent safety characteristics of the KALIMER-600 design have been confirmed by a safety analysis of its bounding events. Research on important thermal-hydraulic phenomena and sensing technologies were performed to support the design study. The integrity of the reactor head against creep fatigue was confirmed using a CFD method, and a model for density-wave instability in a helical-coiled steam generator was developed. Gas entrainment on an agitating pool surface was investigated and an experimental correlation on a critical entrainment condition was obtained. An experimental study on sodium-water reactions was also performed to validate the developed SELPSTA code, which predicts the data accurately. An acoustic leak detection method utilizing a neural network and signal processing units were developed and applied successfully for the detection of a signal up to a noise level of -20 dB. Waveguide sensor visualization technology is being developed to inspect the reactor internals and fuel subassemblies. These research and developmental efforts contribute significantly to enhance the safety, economics, and efficiency of the KALIMER-600 design concept.

  • Piezoelectric ZnO thin films were deposited on 7059 glass substrate by rf magnetron sputtering. The effects of deposition parameter, such as rf power, gas pressure and $O_{2}$/Ar gas ratio, on the crystallinity and electrical properties of the deposited ZnO thin films were studied. It was found that the deposition rate was higher than the previously reported values. ZnO films were suitable for SAW filter since a standard deviation of XRD (002) peak rocking curve was less than $6^{\circ}$. ZnO thin films, which were deposited at $O_{2}$/Ar ratio larger than 25%, showed high resistance. SAW filter was fabricated using ZnO film, of which thickness was 0.25 of the wavelength of the propatating surface acoustic wave. The measured frequency response was consistent with the calculated one. The SAW filter had center frequency 39.08 MHz, phase velocity 2501 m/sec and insertion loss 29 dB.

  • Effect of heat (160, 190, and $220^{\circ}C$ for 24 hr) on coconut oil was examined by principal component analysis using electronic nose consisting of six metal oxide sensors. Increase in heating temperature decreased ratio of resistance and first principal component score (from +0.952 to -0.325), indicating rancidity of coconut oil increased at high heating temperature. Result of electronic nose based on GC with surface acoustic wave sensor showed significant changes in volatile profiles of coconut oil. High resolution olfactory imaging $(VaporPrint^{TM})$ was particularly useful for evaluating oil quality. Peak numbers and areas increased with increasing heating time and temperature (160, $220^{\circ}C$). Electronic nose analysis can provide simple, fast, and straightforward results and is best suited for quality control and process monitoring in flavor field of food industry.

  • As the practical range of SAW Device extended into various fields including physical sensor, chemical sensor and ID Tag, the platform for various SAW Devices is required more than ever. While SAW ID or Sensors advanced remarkably, the development of platform which applies to SAW Sensor left much to be desired. Therefore this paper represents the SAW platform in order to use SAW ID such as ID Tag or Sensors more conveniently. The SAW platform consists of a RF module which can recognize SAW ID and a main module which has a hish performance processor in order to process the response signal of SAW ID. The main module which has a high performance processor is designed by GUI environmental type to ensure that users are able to use the platform more easily. In this paper, the SAW platform, which is based on ARM9 core processor, used Windows Embedded CE 6.0 OS which brings friendly interface to users. Also the developers can make less effort to design various applications with sensors.

  • An abundance of internal waves is observed by SAR in the Yellow Sea during summer. They are small scaled internal waves and are not relatively studied well compared to the ones in the East/South China Sea. These internal waves should be considered in the study of physio-biological properties of the Yellow Sea because the mixing of the stratified surface water caused by internal waves during summer is important for ocean biological environment, and they also affect the sediment transport and acoustic signal transmission in the continental shelf region. To understand the characteristics of internal waves, it is important to get the spatio-temporal information of internal waves simultaneously by executing in-situ measurements as well as the SAR observation. This study tracks the internal waves observed by SAR in the time series of temperature profile data by analyzing simultaneously acquired in-situ measurement data and RADARSAT SAR image on 29 May 2002.

  • We integrated and correlated datasets from surface and subsurface geophysics, drilling cores, and engineering geology to identify geological interfaces and characterize the joints and fracture zones within the rock mass. The regional geometry of a geologically weak zone was investigated via a fence projection of electrical resistivity data and a borehole image-processing system. Subsurface discontinuities and intensive fracture zones within the rock mass are delineated by cross-hole seismic tomography and analyses of dip directions in rose diagrams. The dynamic elastic modulus is studied in terms of the P-wave velocity and Poisson's ratio. Subsurface discontinuities, which are conventionally identified using the N value and from core samples, can now be identified from anomalous reflection coefficients (i.e., acoustic impedance contrast) calculated using a pair of well logs, comprising seismic velocity from suspension-PS logging and density from logging. Intensive fracture zones identified in the synthetic seismogram are matched to core loss zones in the drilling core data and to a high concentration of joints in the borehole imaging system. The upper boundaries of fracture zones are correlated to strongly negative amplitude in the synthetic trace, which is constructed by convolution of the optimal Ricker wavelet with a reflection coefficient. The standard deviations of dynamic elastic moduli are higher for fracture zones than for acompact rock mass, due to the wide range of velocities resulting from the large numbers of joints and fractures within the zone.
